Is it okay for books to be banned from being read/published? Does this take away from human rights? Banning books often takes away many rights of the people and the authors. Throughout the history of the world book banning has been taking place since the first book ban dating back to 1637 in Quincy, Massachusetts by the Puritan Government. In an article titled “Banned Book Statistics”, the author states, “In 2022, book-banning efforts included 2,571 unique books targeted as problematic by various groups and individuals. This was a 60.99% increase compared to 2021” (Curcic). The number of books banned yearly has only been significantly increased. This book was banned and also burned by the Nazis in Italy and Yugoslavia (Freedom to Read). Many people believe that books should be banned due to information such as protecting kids from information that some feel they should not learn about and protecting them from encountering opposing viewpoints with difficult ideas and information. Some book banning is bad because it causes reduced empathy, stifles intellectual curiosity, and children and adults alike cannot compare and contrast thoughts or ideas without the knowledge of books. Firstly, banning books causes reduced empathy by limiting the knowledge of other people and other cultures. Many occurrences of books being banned are because of the thoughts or beliefs of others. When people are not educated about the cultures of other people in the world, we cannot view them the same, and they are typically viewed differently and looked upon as weird. The use of books can normalize these things. In the article “Silenced Voices,” Sigy George states, “Exposure to characters from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and life circumstances promotes empathy by enabling children to relate to and understand the experiences of those unlike themselves.” Books give the ability to understand the different backgrounds that people come
