Lily walked down the aisles of books to find that there was nothing. There were tons of books there, yet none of them appeared interesting to her. She looked for minutes more to find out that the books that she was looking for were all banned. Thousands of books over the years have been banned. Doing so has a negative effect on schools, which then further has an effect on the students. Schools should not be allowed to ban books because of different religions and different student identities. Students will better understand different religions. As we all know, there are plenty of books that are about various religions, which are all written for the main reason of educating students. Chiesa, a student attending Maryville College states, “Students will not …show more content…
If schools continue to allow banning books that have religious context, it will later have a negative effect on the students, due to them being restricted from the specific material. Chiesa is not alone, Nia Cain talks about the long-term effects that book bans have on students. Cain states, “If we continue to restrict the topics students today get to read, we are robbing them of the impactful experiences literature can have and the leaders they may be one day” (Cain para 12). When students are restricted from topics due to the banning of books, they won’t be able to understand important life topics like religion, for example. Schools should end the banning of books because students are getting robbed from being educated. That certain material is what they should be learning about for the better of their future and a better overall understanding. Schools need to remember that without the proper information, students will never be able to educate themselves outside of the classroom. Students might also eventually feel like they don’t belong. Students will be able to learn and feel like they fit in
The practice of the censorship of books in schools has been prevalent due to the explicit content of them. Parents have been complaining to schools about books that count as required reading because they disapprove with the points made in the book. If a book consists of offensive or sexually explicit material, then parents would challenge the schools about them in order to prevent their children from reading them. Censorship in general has been an intensely debated issue because it is considered an infringement to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution while others argue it is used to conceal inappropriate things (Aliprandini and Sprague). The banning of books in school curriculum has also been debated since parents see certain books as inappropriate while others argue that banning them hinders student learning. Against the censorship of books in schools, Fenice Boyd and Nancy Bailey, authors of Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, believe that banning books creates a barrier between students and intellectual development (Boyd and Bailey, 655). Banning books from schools and removing them from the curriculum prevents students from exploring different ideas and developing creativity and critical thinking skills.
When authors write books, the books are meant to be read not banned. Authors write books to be read, so when schools and other facilities are banning books it’s taking away the author’s right. In the letter, I am Very Real written by author Kurt Vonnegut, he states “If you were to bother to read my books, to behave as educated persons would, you would learn that they are not sexy, and do not argue in favor of wildness of any kind. They beg that people be kinder and more responsible than they often are.” This excerpt from the text states that the author doesn’t write books to teach cruel things. Vonnegut writes books in a kind manner with the idea that people become more
The image, taken by photographer Lisa Maree Williams, captures a group of young Muslim women who are members of the AFL team, the Auburn Giants, standing close together and cheering at an oval before playing a match against their competitors. The photograph challenges and reinforces ideas about Australian identity, culture, and race through its visual conventions and techniques, such as the low camera angle shot, proximity, and facial expression. The low camera angle shot used puts the AFL players in a position of power, the angle of the shot makes them seem closer, taller, bigger, and stronger than us, as if we are small children looking up to our parents, emphasising the unity and strength of the Auburn Giants team even though they are women and not "Australian." This technique challenges the common stereotype of an Australian as a white, blonde person with a family born and raised in Australia. Instead, the photograph showcases a diverse group of young women, especially those of the Islamic faith and clearly immigrants, demonstrating that Australian identity is not limited to a particular race or ethnicity.
Censorship is a concept with several different meanings. To each individual censorship has its own meaning. Is it a violation of our rights or is it a protection for our well being? Censorship in the generic sense refers to the suppression of information, ideas, or opinions. It occurs in all forms of communication from technological media to print media. Each society, culture, or individual's belief is violated by the codes of censorship that our society instills.
Banning books from public schools and public libraries is wrong. It’s irrational to have a parent or school board member’s opinion determine what a school district should be reading. Books including and not limited to, The Scarlet Letter, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Lord of the Flies, and Animal Farm all have one thing in common. They have all at one time or another been subject to banishment. These literary classics have been around for a long time and proved to be vital to the education of many, especially children and adolescents. These novels teach values and educate children about world affairs that can not come from an everyday experience. These controversial novels encompass the materials that ultimately boost our educational wealth. Banning books infringe
School boards and teachers have a responsibility for protecting the minds of their students and covering age appropriate material. However, does this responsibility cover the extreme act of banning books from school classrooms? Does not the teacher have a duty to introduce to their students world issues in order to better the students ability to cope with problems in the world? How does a school decide which books should be banned from the classroom, and should it be left up to the teacher to decide what is decided in his/her classroom. By banning books from the classroom, we prevent our students from learning about controversial topics in a safe environment, and we also encroach upon the student’s freedom of reading what they want in school.
Literature has long been an important part of human life. We express our feelings with ink and paper; we spill out our souls on dried wood pulp. Writing has been form of release and enjoyment since the beginning of written language. You can tell a story, make yourself a hero. You can live out all your fantasies. You can explore all of your thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and share them with the outside world. But just because you can write, don't think you are uninhibited!
Authors being banned from their right to Freedom of Speech because parents cannot accept what they say. According to the American Library Association (ALA), family values, religion, political views, and minority rights are four motivating factors of why people want to ban books, although there are many others (Kennedy Kids’ Book Censorship). Racial issues are commonly a concern when it comes to banning books because people often mistake the content for encouragement rather than discussion (Kelly). Religious fundamentalists frequently find topics such as homosexuality and magic inappropriate because it seems to support damaging lifestyles and witchcraft when the writer could simply be using these topics to help a child expand their imagination to different ideas of life (Kelly). Family values are a big issue when it comes to what teachers require their students to read in class, because some parents also do not allow their child to watch or access certain television shows or websites....
Imagine you have a child. This child loves to read books on their own. They read so much you finally tell them to get their books from the library. Then, one day, your child asks you what does this word mean, you are horrified to see that the child is pointing to a curse word. From that point on the child gets in trouble with teachers and other adults for saying that word. This is why book banning is necessary to keep children from finding themselves in that situation and others. Book banning is required because a child may be taught bad habits, lose the magical innocence of childhood, and because children may not be mature enough to decide what materials to read.
Has your school ever banned any books due to them having inappropriate content for your age group? How did it affect you or your peers? Many schools and public libraries have started banning books because of it having unsuitable content in them. I believe that certain books should be banned from libraries because some include racial slurs, others contain a blasphemous dialogue in them and usually kids shouldn’t be exposed to these types of books because of their age, lastly other books encourage children of unsuitable lifestyles that are considered dangerous or inappropriate in this world and it’s unacceptable for many parents to have their child read such topics at such a young and innocent age.
Moreover, a society is not portrayed as a fair society unless ideas and opinions are flourished individually and equally through the society. According to the 1st Amendment of the United States, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” which means that “prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,” is unfair to us and violates the freedom of “the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” (Source F). If students don’t have the right to be free and explore through different types of books then that is dehumanization against our society. According to student surveys, a substantial amount of teens were gathered to read books that were considerably banned in school and this was their response after the survey; “I really liked how it was written. Also I really liked...
Book banning deprives people of the opportunity to think, question, and explore. Books, especially ones that have been banned, have themes that make people think. Some of the most controversial topics have been presented as a theme in a book. Books try to help us understand the reality that is our everyday life and urge us to question the “normal” things in society.
Because then they’re taking away opportunities from other kids/people to find and get whatever they need from a book. When you ban a book in a state, school, etc, just because of reasons/beliefs you have, it shows that you as a person likely don’t have much empathy and don’t have or care for wanting more perspective on things that could benefit you as well as others. Books answer and create questions, inspire us to dream and give us what we need to achieve our
Picking up a book and being transported to another world is a type of magic. Being able to read what you want is a right that book banning in schools and public libraries is facing in today’s world. Books are an amazing source of information, whether fiction or non-fiction. They can be the building blocks to understanding different aspects of the world around them. Books have the ability to shine a light on topics that are hard to talk about, or topics that are controversial in the world.
Banned books can be a threat to children and teenagers. There are many reasons parents and guardians agree with this. Some parents or guardians want to be able to control what their child reads and what they are exposed to. Children or teenagers should not be exposed to inappropriate content that is not appropriate for their age group. Some other religious authorities want to control the spread of dangerous ideas and the information available to their followers.
