Persistence, teamwork, and responsibility: all qualities that band has taught me. In the plainest words, I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I hadn’t joined marching band. Today, I strive for excellence and pursue my best efforts in all that I do. I have learned about myself to a greater extent and who I am in these last four years as a member than I have in any other experience. For two years, I have been head drum major and during this time, I have had to earn the band’s respect, demonstrate my leadership abilities, and work hard to be successful. Through my experience, I have learned a series of diverse life lessons and skills, which include, but are not limited to: responsibility, time management, persistence, teamwork, camaraderie, trust, and respect. Members are accountable for various things throughout the season, which has helped me become more independent and realize you should only depend on yourself to accomplish the tasks you need to accomplish. I am flexible enough to change my show in order to do what’s best for the group and take constructive criticism seriously. This time management skill will be extremely useful in my life. I am aware of what I need to do in order to benefit myself or the group. Also, I am able to sacrifice what I want to do in order to do what I need to do. Furthermore, my leadership qualities have surpassed my expectations.
