According to Fischer and Schwieterman (2008) the neighborhoods of Chicago are a veritable kaleidoscope of culture— colorful amalgams of languages, dialects, religions, and culinary traditions. One of those neighborhoods is Back of the Yards. This community was chosen as my project because of its rich culture and history.
History
Moving from door-to-door, this community organizer Saul Alinsky assembled the Back-of-the-Yards residents after wars years. He penned Reveille for Radicals, a proclamation to build a greater neighborhood to fight City Hall more successfully. He called for a “backyard revolution” across the nation. First, is located at 2111 W. 47th Place Chicago Illinois. As a part of Hispanic Heritage month Gutierrez did a story on the international Baccalaureate or IB program at the Back of the Yards College Preparatory High School. The school is integrated, according to the reporter 90% of the students are Hispanic and 10% other, and the student bond because of their ethnicity. A student Melissa Chio-Salinas stated there is a connection with the students because they are all Latinos (Theresa Gutierrez, 2014). Gutierrez quotes several sources, like teacher Sarah Schneider, “We are trying to give kids the sciences to better their community and family and go outside and be successful,” student Melissa Chio-Salinas, “We are all Latinos and we have this connection, “student Richard Cirilo, “The teachers do not let you fall through the cracks,” and principal Patricia Brekke, “It will prepare them for a secondary education.” In Gutierrez’s interview, Brekke also points out, students have a voice her in their future these are some of the brightest students in the city and they want to do well, 90 percent of the students are Hispanic, and many of them bod because of their ethnicity. Gutierrez states, CPS officials believe this enriching and innovation academic school in the Back of the Yards College Prep is an exciting addition to this community, and that it will assist to prepare future students for educational and professional success (Gutierez, (2014).
