Aykeia, I too agree that they share the same style but how they tend to express their stories differ. Li-Young seems to be expressive in all the earthly things of this world from beginning to end as we know it on this earth. The line in the poem, “Become Becoming”, “And time. Does time Blossom? Ripen? Or branch in two directions seen and unseen” (Li-young, 2004, pg.597) gives me the sense that the author is spiritual and in tune with all things around him. Just as in the poem “From Blossoms” that you speak of, describing the peach from the outside to the core and the sensation that it gives when eaten, describe the cycle of life. Yes, I found Cathy Songs writing to be about relationships, and how they can guide our being on earth and in life.
As in the poem” The girl can Run” show relationship with things in life and not dealing with any of the issues, or relationships. As you did, I too found her writing to be on a personal level of one on one whereas Li-young may express one to many. Very nice post
(2) Both poems are about fruit. However, the fruit is metaphorical for different views people can have on the same object or subject. In both poems, the pieces of fruit are described with great detail. The shape, color and taste are all mentioned. In terms of format there are too similarities that can be found. Stevens and Lee both use stanzas that do not rhyme. Furthermore, both poems contain simple sentences, not long phrases. Both poems seem - one more than the other - to talk about a painting. "Citrons, oranges and greens", and "are blobs on the green cloth", in Study of Two Pears', suggesting a still life. In Persimmons' "three paintings by my father", talking about his fathers paintings.
The similarities are prolific in their presence in certain parts of the novel, the very context of both stories shows similarities, both are dealing with an oppressed factor that is set free by an outsider who teaches and challenges the system in which the oppressed are caught.
Li-Young Lee is a brilliant contemporary poet who used his figurative language skills to write about a complex relationship between father and son. In the poem, A Story, Lee utilizes his abilities of emotional appeal and literary devices to depict a loving father who reads stories to his five year old son; fearing that one day, his son will tire of him and leave. Lee was able to use strategic literary devices such as point of view, structure, and imagery to convey the complexity of the father and son relationship.
As you can see, upon looking at both pieces of writing from a different angle, there is always the opportunity for different interpretations. It is certain that a deeper analysis will give even more possible themes and common topics. Now that you have seen how each of these can be read in more than one way, hopefully you can read other pieces of poetry, attain different meanings for them and have greater love and knowledge for poetry in general.
I can personally relate this song to my past relationship with a guy of 2 years. We had many rough patches while we were together. There were things in the relationship that I can never erase; yet I feel as though I will never fully let him go. He's still trying so hard to get me back and I'm taking advantage of it. I get many mixed emotions about him and the thought of starting up the relationship again. The hardest part is that he's the only person I truly feel I can completely be myself around. Yet, I fear that it will start right back where it ended. All he wants to be is my giving tree and make me happy.
Both poems share many things in common. The first being the obvious theme of major decision making and choosing the best path, so that life doesn't pass you by. Blanche obviously had Robert Frost's famous poem sitting beside her when she wrote her own rendition of the poem 21 years after Frost's death. Most of the stanzas in each poem match up with one another. Similar words are used as well, such as in the first stanza of each poem "and be one traveler, long I stood"(Frost), and "and mulling it over, long she stood."(Blanche) Both of these lines are undoubtedly similar, and they are both part of a five line stanza that rhymes the ending words of two lines and three lines to each other.
Comparing Take Something Like a Star by Robert Frost and Love Calls Us to the Things of This World by Richard Wilbur
A long time ago, before man had mastery of the elements, the world was split in three. In this world, there was the fiery continent, the bottomless ocean and the infinite sky. No life could exist on the world for the land was too hot, the ocean too fierce and the sky was but a void.
When considering the structure of the poems, they are similar in that they are both written loosely in iambic pentameter. Also, they both have a notable structured rhyme scheme.
Both poems inspire their reader to look at their own life. In addition, they treat the reader to a full serving of historic literature that not only entertains, but also teaches valuable lesson in the form of morals and principles.
When reading Heaven by Cathy Song one might come to conclusion that she is experiencing feelings of disappointment by some of her word
Many if not all the songs we listen to talk about love; which as Brooke mentioned is not the only topic out there. There are many more topics that artists could write about. Most artist write about what they think will sell or what has proven to sell in the past.
There was another thing that she had stated which was ,”In these tough life moments, music can be a constructive way to express who you are and what you are feeling. If you are feeling particularly sad about a reality in your life, listen to a song that connects you to that emotion. If you are anxious, turn up the volume in your living room and dance around. If you are angry, grab a pillow and hit is as hard as you can while listening to your favorite lyrics.” This is indeed a fact that most of us would agree because either the tone or even the lyrics can make up who and how the person is like. For example like if a person song had kinda a sad tone to it , it would definitely have sad lyrics in the song that the singer is singing. If the tone is more of a happy tone then it would probably have happy lyrics on how the person feels on this event that have happened in their life. But most people are thought of mostly on how their songs are like even how their lyrics in the songs they sing makes what they
In the poems “Goat” and “A Bee” they have several similarities and differences. The differences being the choice of words used in the poems, one was more descriptive and passionate. Also, the figures of speech would be another difference because one uses a lot of metaphors and hyperbole’s, the other uses a simile. The similarity I think would be that both of them want to escape from the world and be a part of nature.
William Blake, the author of the two exceptional poems, “Songs of Innocence” and “Songs of Experience,” does an excellent job of creating two very similar, yet divergent pieces of literature. The two poems, “Songs of Innocence” and “Songs of Experience,” both use literary devices to, consequently, produce a light and dark tone throughout the pieces.
