The book Awake written by Natasha Preston was basically about this cult called Eternal Light and its leaders wanted and “needed” to sacrifice their daughter for the greater good of their community. They then have to rely on Noah to get Scarlett, their daughter, to the place for sacrifice, which takes place in Dublin, Ireland. As Noah enters the world outside his community he has to keep this huge secret from Scarlett to get her to trust him. Sooner or later Noah’s secret will be out in the open and his life will forever be changed, but for the better or for the worse? In the book Noah is described as a tall, blond, blue eyed, deep voice and cooked smile kind of guy. “I used to think I was more of a tall, dark, and handsome type of girl, but …show more content…

He is very mysterious, and manipulative, extremely charming, trusting, and easily manipulated by those around him. His initial thought when he first got to Scarlett was that it would be so easy to manipulate her without catching feelings, but little did he know that by falling for Scarlett he would be changed forever. “I wasn’t supposed to feel anything for her. It wasn’t even supposed to be possible to have feelings for her.” (23). Although he could fool everyone else about his feelings toward Scarlett, he couldn’t fool himself. “ I liked her, yes. I could fool my family, but I couldn’t fool myself.” (24). Noah had in fact fallen in love with Scarlett that was his biggest conflict of all, but at first he didn’t know if falling in love with her was a bad or good thing. “I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with you. I tried so hard not to, but the more I did, the less I believed what I’d been taught my whole life. My dad always said that you know you are in love when someone comes along and makes you question everything. You did that, and at first I hated it.” (210). His people had a lot of influence over him and his “mission” was a very big deal according to Eternal Light. “There was a lot riding on my ability to win over Scarlett. I had to make this work.” Thinking of home gave me strength. There was a lot of distance between me and my people, but knowing they were all behind me spurred me on.” (23). …show more content…

Before he met her he was a completely sheltered being. He never got the chance to be a normal teenager. “I don’t know, you’ve not watched much TV, never had movie nights, you don’t eat a whole lot of junk, and you’ve never had a girlfriend before.” (25)-Scarlett. “Funny how I meet you, and three weeks later, I’ve corrected all of that.” Another conflict he faced was turning his back on his community once he knew how much he cared for Scarlett. In the beginning he felt guilty for lying to her, but once he had betrayed her and saw how that changed her that affected him greatly. “ She loved me, trusted me, and I was about to throw her to the lions.” (160). After the second ritual everything became clear to Noah. “ I had never felt emotion as strongly as I did then. Standing there and watching it was the hardest thing I had ever done. But the veil covering Eternal Light lifted as I sipped her blood. What we were doing was wrong. I loved her more than anything else in the world and I wouldn’t stand by and let anyone hurt her. I had to make it right. Today was also a turning point for me. I realized that without a shadow of a doubt, Scarlett came first. I was turning my back on Eternal Light, and as soon as I’d made that decision, everything became clear.”
