Policy for Autonomous Housing Victoria Baker Professor O’Connor World Sustainability 4 December 2014 Autonomous housing is a step in the right direction for creating a more sustainable planet as well as improving low-income urban areas around the world. Autonomous housing is a self-sufficient building system that uses local resources to satisfy basic needs. In order for a home to be self-sufficient, it must generate its own electricity, have a way to heat and cool the home, access fresh water, and have its own waste-disposal system. In self-sufficient homes, sunlight or wind is often used for electricity, rainwater and snow- melt is collected for drinking, bathing, and cooking, and kitchen and toilet waste is used as garden fertilizer. In order to create a more sustainable planet, the answer would be that it’s needed everywhere. Unfortunately, it isn’t easy to convince everyone to give up his or her current lifestyle, especially if it’s a comfortable one. Those with less comfortable lifestyles, however, could use self-sufficient housing to solve a multitude of problems. When brought to urban areas, autonomous housing lessens problems with population growth, slums, poverty, climate change, lack of sustainable energy, and economic problems (Sustainable Housing). Many urban areas and poor areas have issues with bad infrastructure, paying bills, segregation, and isolation. Community self-sufficient housing solves all of those problems. Autonomous housing is accessible to low-income families homes can be built and sustained for under $50,000. Utilities take care of themselves, so paying utility bills no longer becomes an issue. Living in communities allows resources to stretch even further and provides a sense of community. The housing can be modified to fit cultural and social needs, and is a great investment for governments since it holds up for a long
