Audre Lorde stated, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is an act of self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare." When Lorde said this, she was speaking about the right of self-care despite the disapproval of others. Self-care is-- often from an outsider's perspective-- seen as a selfish act; however, this is extremely untrue. Self-care is a necessary action needed for a healthy life.
The official definition of self-care is "the care of the self without medical or other professional consultation." The definition is better stated as a way to put self first to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle all while bettering mental and physical health. “If you want to live an authentic, meaningful life, you need to master the art of disappointing and upsetting others, hurting feelings, and living with the reality that some people just won’t like you. It may not be easy, but it’s essential if you want your life to reflect your deepest desires, values, and needs.” This quote is important to the definition of self-care because it helps a person realize if they are living for themselves, or if they are just living for others. Self-care can be as personal as a diary or as open as a post on social media. It is becoming more and more socially acceptable to act upon a day based on self-care not for the other person's joy. Thankfully, self-care is a trend that has stuck around longer than most to promote a healthy lifestyle being the desired lifestyle over money, power, or even fast food. It has switched to working out, being happy and healthy in one selves environment, and eating healthy yet delicious foods.
