The article “Attention Students: Put Your Laptops Away” by NPR.com states that by writing your notes longhand, you are able to memorize your studies more and do better on a test. NPR.com conducted a research experiment to prove this point, in which they took Universtiy students and showed them various TED talks about different topics and had them take notes, some on their laptops and some longhand. Their first discovery was that those who used laptops used significantly more words than those doing longhand, who had to shorten their notes to fit what was important in the time they had. Those taking written notes had to be selective. They then took a test to show who had done better. The results showed that on basic questions that required students
to memorize something, such as dates, both groups did well. But for questions requiring thoughts and analysis, those who had typed their notes on the laptop, had done “significantly worse” than those who had written. They tried more experiments in which in they told those students on laptops to avoid copying word-for-word. Those who had written had still proven to have better results. I agree with the facts proven in this article. I write all my notes longhand, and sometimes rewrite them. I do pretty well on tests given, and am much better when I listen to a lecture or see and slideshow and take notes, then on the computer or taking notes from a reading. Their experiment has definitly boosted my opinion towards the matter as well. After reading the article, I agree completely that writing longhand notes is the easier and more efficient way to remember needed information from class

Over the past few decades technology has advanced quite a bit. The use of calculators, computers, and other techniques in many fields has increased significantly. In a large scale, technology is replacing the method of instruction in the field of education. Many people believe that adopting technology in learning process can increase productivity. However, David Gelernter, who is a professor at Yale University as well as a leading figure in the field of technology, suggests to limit the use of technology in the classroom in his article “Unplugged: The Myth of Computers in the Classroom” which was published in the New Republic magazine in 1994. In this article he offers well illustrated analysis which makes the readers to regulate the use of technology in the classroom. He thinks that the technology comes in a way of building strong foundation of basic skills. He insists that computers should be used to aid the learning process, not to replace cognitive thinking.

What benefits does cursive writing hold, if students were to learn? Phsycologists found that if students hand write vs. type they remember better what was wriiten down. Well who said you need to know cursive to hand write? There is something called fine print, and we use that everyday of our lives. You just don't need cursive anymore. That is why it should never be required.

It is a fact that some people are better at taking tests than other people. Intelligent students who challenge themselves throughout their high school careers and have high grade point averages can do poorly on a test, while a student who has only taken basic level classes can score significantly higher. Is that a fair representation of what was achieved in high school?... ... middle of paper ...

The general argument made by the author in the article, “Attention Students: Put Your Laptops Away”, is that handwriting notes is more effective than typing notes on laptops. The author argues that even though typing notes is faster, we process and retain the information better when we handwrite our notes. The author says, “Typing your notes is faster which comes in handy when there’s a lot of information to take down” and “‘The students who were taking longhand notes in our studies were forced to be more selective because you can’t write as fast as you can type”’. The author is suggesting that everyone can type faster than they can write. In conclusion, the author believes that writing notes is more beneficial than typing, even though typing

Moreover, no paper is used. Therefore, it helps the environment. As a matter of fact, at the time of the study it is easy to find hot words instead of searching for several sheets of notebook. Also, it makes easier to add things to the notes instead of cross out what is already written. There are more choices of color, letters, sizes. Which helps to memorize certain things. In fact, we let ourselves worry about whether our notes get damaged or lost in case we forget our stuff somewhere. Another advantage could be that when it comes to lend your notes to your classmates it will be easier to read them for the person since not all of us have a good handwriting. Also, if lend your notes take your only means of study with a laptop does not happen because you can generate multiple copies of the same
In “The Laptop Ate My Attention span”, Abbey Ellin describes the advantages and disadvantages of the internet being used in the classroom. Although she does include different types of schools, the author focuses in on business school students. She explains to us that an increasing amount of college campuses are choosing what students can or cannot do with their laptop while in class. Ellin describes what students do use their computer for in school and while some students are starting their own business others are chatting away or just not spending their time wisely. With it being that these are the future leaders of america and the people with access to a higher education, Ellin would expect them to have some sense of manners when it comes to what they are using their computer for during class time. The author gives us an example that a student knows better than to walk out of a
