Atlanta is the capital and largest city in Georgia, with a population of 472,522, and one of the fastest growing major cities in the United States.1 Originally, known as a railroad settlement, it was founded in 1837 as the end of the Western & Atlantic railroad line ( the name changed from Marthasville to Terminus, to finally Atlanta, the feminine of Atlantic). 10 In 1861, became one of the 11 states seceding from the Union over the issue of slavery.11 It was also the home front during the Civil War and a major producer of war materials, and the regional transportation and distribution center.11 Post-war, due to railroads, Atlanta continued to economically grow and diversify, along with its population.11 A large number of African-Americans were drawn to this booming city due to its opportunities for education and employment.11 By 1900, more than 40% of the total population comprised of Black/African-Americans.11 As Atlanta’s population grew, so did the racial tensions.11 Several riots broke off during the 1900’s, including the reemergence and formation of Ku Klux Klan headquarters in Atlanta.11Today, the city remains a transportation hub for the nation and the world, with the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.10 The city is considered a banking center and has the third largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the nation.10

While there are 14 counties that forms the metro-Atlanta region, the actual city of Atlanta comprises of primarily Fulton and Dekalb county.
The focus of this community health assessment would be the actual city of Atlanta, which includes Fulton and Dekalb County. The city is divided into sections of five: Downtown, north of downtown- Midtown, east of downtown, south of downtown, and west of downtown.11 The tallest and most closely grouped buildings in Atlanta are found in Five Points (the original and geographic center of the city) and immediately north along Peachtree
Street.11 Downtown section of Atlanta has some of the major attractions such as the Georgia World Congress Center, Georgia Dome, CNN Center, Philips Arena, Centennial Olympic Park, the Civic Center, Georgia Institute of Technology, the Fox Theatre, Georgia State University, Auburn Avenue (with many historic structures and important institutions, including the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site), and the Georgia Aquariam, the largest in the world.11 North of downtown features tall offices and hotel buildings, residential communities, restaurants, bars, and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.11 The south of downtown includes Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the United States Penitentiary Atlanta.11 The west side of Atlanta contains the Washington Park (a black residential community built in the 1920s and containing the first public park, tennis courts, and swimming pool for African Americans in Atlanta) and the Wren's Nest (home of writer Joel Chandler Harris).11 The majority population in Atlanta is Black/African-American, which consists of about 52.40% of the population.1 The remaining population consists of 37.2 % White, 4.8% Hispanic or Latino, 4.0% Asians, 0.30% Native Americans and Alaska Native, and 0.00% Pacific Islanders (180).1 Only 10.8% of the total population of the city of Atlanta is 65 years of age and older, while U.S has 15.2%.1,12 The major community issues that impacts the city of Atlanta are a) Poverty/ Economic security- According to recent data, total percent population in Atlanta living in poverty is 24.0%, compared to the US percent of 12.2% in 2016.1,2 Although the Black/African American population is higher in Atlanta, majority live in neighborhoods with high concentration of poverty.3 A 2015 report showed the income disparity between Atlanta’s white American families (approximately $84,944) compared to Atlanta’s African American families (about $26,605).3 Also, based on the interview with the law enforcement officer and the windshield survey, homelessness due to poverty, unemployment, and low-income, is one of the top three issues facing the city. The west and south of downtown Atlanta are the most disposed to poverty. Thus, despite the city’s growth, poverty remain still a significant issue, affecting mostly the communities of color. b) Violence/ Crime- Based on research and the interview with the police officer, crime is a major public health issue of the city of Atlanta. Atlanta has a crime rate of 68 per 1000 residents, which is one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes.5 While the crime and violence rates in U.S is only 31.1 on a scale from 1 (low) to 100, Dekalb County has 62 and Fulton county scored 57.6,7 It has one of the highest rates of property crimes and motor vehicle thefts in the nation.5 Communities with high level of poverty, low income, unemployment, and lack of quality education are all major factors leading to high crime rate. c) Substance Abuse- Drug abuse is a growing epidemic in the city of Atlanta due to high volume of tourism and education centers.14 While the use of prescription drugs such as synthetic opioids and cocaine has decreased, studies show an increase in heroine, methamphetamines, illegal marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-based liquids, and alcohol use.14,15 Heroin use is most prevalent among young adults. Those seeking primary heroin treatment has increased from 58.4% in 2012 and to 63.6% in 2013.14 There is also an increase in heroin trafficking in these areas with the number of items that the NFLIS found to have heroin rising from 512 in 2012 and 700 in 2013.14 Multiple death-related data (drug poisoning, Georgia Medical Examiner, and Fulton County Medical Examiner) suggest over a 100% surge in heroin-related fatalities and death.15 d) Access of care- A recent 2016-2017 data reports the total percent population uninsured in the city of Atlanta is 15.7%, compared to the U.S percent of 8.8%.1,4 Poverty and unemployment or low income can impact one’s ability to afford health insurance, cause poor health, increase stress and unhealthy behaviors, and increase mental problems such as depression. Transportation is another barrier that affects them.7 e) Education- Research show educational attainment as one of the strongest predictors of life expectancy and lifetime health status.8 Between 2012-2016, 89.5% of the population 25 years and older have graduated High School in Atlanta.1 However, the percent population of age 25 without High School Diploma in Dekalb County alone in 2016 was 11.63%, compared to the U.S percent of 13.98%.8 School quality and educational attainment is not evenly distributed.8 Thus, education is still an issue in certain counties within the community, especially in the low-income neighborhoods. f) Obesity/ Healthy Eating and Active Life- In Atlanta, wealthier areas have better access to food retailer, higher fruit and vegetable consumption, and places to exercise, thus are more physically active.8 However, economically disadvantaged or distressed areas have lesser access to healthy food, leading to higher prevalence of obesity in such low-income and rural communities and people of color.8 According to the 2015 Health Assessment, 75% of Fulton County adult residents and 18% of youth were identified as obese or overweight.9 Low-income, uninsured, and undereducated populations are the most vulnerable population for poor health status in Atlanta.8 Based on the Healthy People 2020 goals, the study areas for the community health needs assessment include: targeting the social determinants of health such as eliminating poverty and reducing crime to create a better social and physical environment; combating substance abuse; improving access to comprehensive health care services; increasing the quality, availability, and effectiveness of educational and community-based health programs for enhancing the quality of life; improving the nutrition and promoting health to prevent chronic disease risk.13 Personal Observation Windshield survey depicts the quality of life people in Fulton and Dekalb County residents live. The homeless people sleeping under the bridge and old structures of the houses portrays the struggles the neighborhood faces due to poverty or low-income. The assessment of the city shows one part of the city growing and developing and the other part of the city still in need of assistance and improvement. Interview As per the interview with an esteemed law enforcement officer who works the streets of Atlanta city for the past 7-8 years claims substance abuse, homelessness, and crime are the top three issues the city faces, of which substance abuse is the number one. In his experience and opinion, increasing awareness through educating the community regarding the harmful effects of drugs is one way to combat this public health issue. Also, further action must be employed to prevent the narcotics from entering the country.

In this paper, I will detail how the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 was not only a civil rights movement on the part of the black people in Tulsa, but also a detailed look into the way that civil rights was handled in a deeply racially divided city as Tulsa, Oklahoma. My research will feature many of the different survivors who were able to speak out about the injustice of the Tulsa Race Riot before they died; many of these people were children at the time. I also have a series of secondary sources from books from the library and some online sources. The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 begins before many of the major civil rights movements happen in the United States, but I believe that understanding the steps that black people had to take in order to declare their rights and how riots were used to stop black empowerment are essential to American history.
...et them run it!” Montgumery wanted a safe place for blacks to live and grow as people. Mound Bayou was very proprose. When Missippi wanted to put in place the Jim Crow laws , Iza Montgumery was delegated to vote against the idea. But Iza voted for the a law against uneducation blacks would not be able to vote. That speech caused massive confusion for the blacks in the south. Although the white people at the rally were very happy and impressed by the way Booker talked. To blacks this idea was called the Atlanta Comprimse. Dispite any Advances by blacks they were all surpressed because Jim Crow had complete control over the power of the United States.

Racial unrest and violence was prevalent throughout the United States in the early 1900’s. It was hard to go any amount of time without hearing of the lynching of a black citizen, a violent mob against black people, or large riots of killing blacks. In Rosewood, Florida, an incident of high caliber and commotion occurred during these moments of extreme racial segregation. These Rosewood incidents became public knowledge as the entire population of blacks chose to move out of the small city. These black citizens were in fear for their lives as many racially heinous and violent crimes were occurring against the people of their same race. Lynching had become so common that many blacks moved in fear that if they did not, they would end up dead.

The Tulsa race riot changed the course of American history by actively expressing African American views on white supremacy. Certainly I feel with the available facts in this research paper, that the whites were the aggressors for the events leading up to the Tulsa race riot and the start of the Tulsa race riot. African Americans were simply there to stand up against the white supremacy and to provide the African Americans Tulsa their freedom and equal justice.
Without Federal support, African Americans would have never been able to achieve what they have. Little Rock and the civil rights movement dramatically changed the face of the nation and gave a sense of dignity and power to black Americans. Most of all, the millions of Americans who participated in the movement brought about changes that reinforced our nation’s basic constitutional rights for all Americans- black and white, men and women, young and old. In the first assignment of Research Skills (Studio Pathway), we have to explain some terms in research. Every student has to choose 5 terms. 5 research terms that interested me are Case Study, Literature Review, Primary Source, Secondary Source, and Survey.
When the City of Atlanta is mentioned, individuals automatically associate the city with its positive attributes, such as, the beautiful lights, family activities and tourist attractions. The city of Kennesaw is a quite area full of history that is located in Atlanta’s greater metropolitan area. The city is mostly known for its railroad history during the Civil War era, the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain and the controversial gun ordinance of 1982. With an area this rich in history, it is interesting to see why it is that the gun ordinance was placed into affect as well as see why it is still in existence.

I think that we should move back to Georgia because the weather is much better than in Illinois. In Illinois, we get so much snow and the weather is brutal. In Georgia, we always had sunny days everyday and the lowest the temperature ever got was 45 degrees. We used to think that 45 degrees was cold, but in Illinois, 45 degrees is a blessing. You both are always complaining about how cold it is outside, so I think that we should move back to Georgia.
