In my opinion, Atheism is not considered to be a religion. The world today is moving towards Atheism as secularism expands and churches start to go out of business. The modern age is believed to be moving away from religion as people see no point in having religion in a more scientific and technological day and age where most universal questions can be answered through science. This doesn’t mean that Atheism is a religion, though. Even if the world decides to branch from religion and move towards a more secular view of existence without a super being, it doesn’t mean that a belief in no god is considered a religion. The lack of belief in a higher being creates the idea of nothing being sacred in an Atheist’s so called religion. Because they don’t believe in anything, they can’t have a sacred place of worship or any sacred objects to pray to. Atheists also don’t have a belief of what happens in the afterlife whereas most religions extensively talk about what exactly happens to you in the afterworld. The lack of a God also means there is no belief of a prophet showing that there are no sacred people in their so-called religion either. Atheists don’t even have a common belief system that everyone can agree on which leads to numerous debates on ideologies and issues facing their belief. People look to religion to help find answers to questions in our daily lives. Some include how to raise our children, restrictions on what is considered to be right and wrong, and laws of what is sacred. Atheism uses science as their reference of what is considered right and wrong. A religion must have a divine guide as to what acts are moral. The main reason most religions have a sacred text for moral values are because they believe that God or a supernatural being inscribed it at one point in history. The lack of a common belief system amongst Atheists also means that there are conflicting ideas and issues of what moral values are right or wrong in their so-called religion. Science also cannot explain questions that only the universe would know such as why we exist, what is our purpose on Earth, and how can we make the most of our existence while we are alive.
