Assignment 5.1 Pureshka Panicker
In my current role at Stanford University, I have to often give presentations. There are situations in which I have been asked to train the administrative associates as well as the financial specialists in processes. The administrative associate must comply with the National Institute of Health’s regulation or the transactions can be denied. It is important when preparing for this type of presentation that I plan and be careful to focus on the audience, the message, and how to be effective in getting the message across during the presentation. The attention span of the group is limited, and thus I have to be creative in my presentation. Using PowerPoint and Excel spreadsheets are important to reinforce the training procedure.
When presenting information, I have to make sure to be clear and simplistic enough for the administrative associate staff to understand. Their daily priorities have to be affected for them to take an initiative. It is important to focus on their experiences and try to create a qualifying message that will seem relevant to them.

requires that I be as conscious as possible and I do not spend too much time explaining complicated processes. When dealing with faculty they are preoccupied with their research and not the details of the University’s policies. When giving a presentation it is important to contain your fears.
When giving a presentation you have to focus on the goal of teaching your audience. You should not overlook the fact that you must delivery your message in an organized manner. People are often intimidated because they are scared something embarrassing might happen. They are also scared that they will forget something that they were supposed to say. In those incidences, you should make sure to have notecards or some type of notes to fall back on. When giving the Presentation 5.2, I initially had to look at my slides to get myself in the rhythm of things. I lacked strong eye contact in the beginning. Once I built up confidence after slide 2, I was okay. Having a warm up period can be useful to reduce
stress. Using visual props can also help in eliminating fears. By having props they can help to reinforce a concept to the audience but they can also serve as a reminder of specific trigger points in the speech. It can serve as a reminder to mention certain ideas or share examples to the audience. In order to become an effective speaker you should make sure your presentation consists of an Introduction, Body and Close. This format can provide three anchors for your presentation. The introduction tells the audience why you are there. Have the first sentence of the introduction at the tip of your tongue so that you are prepared and will not fumble. Next you should prepare extra material. In the event you forget the information that is required, you will have extra knowledge to fall back on. It is also important to think about your pace. If you find yourself racing through a speech then your audience will also feel rushed. Take time to slow down and process what the audience is doing with the information you are giving. Thus go slow and pronounce each topic clearly. Another way to be effective is to have eye contact with your audience. Try to focus on looking at the audience and focus on the audience and what you are saying. Do not think about your fears. Practicing multiple times and taking deep breaths can also make your presentation move effective.
This helped so much because the students were able to concentrate and listen when the evaluations were of benefit to them especially if it could count on their grades learnt that presentations are so important because you get to learn so many things as you present from your fellow peers.
“In fact, some corporations, like 3M, are banning PowerPoint from their offices” (Wahl, 2003). Employees can learn through analyzing, interacting with others, and discussing. However, PowerPoint encourages presentation, not conversation. Bullet points summarize everything into a few words, leaving no area to analyze or discuss the information further. According to Julia Keller (2003) PowerPoint condenses information into a “preconceived format” (para. 8) that is one-sided based on the presenter’s view of the information. During my demonstration speech, I was affected by my speech anxiety. Some of the viewable symptoms were the shaking of my hands and also the stuttering of speech. I was able to control myself and relax after I started getting into my information. I did use some of the suggested relaxation techniques to relieve my anxiety. Before I got up to speak I thought confident of myself to help give me courage and confidence.

After re watching my own presentation I have noticed many different things that I didn’t think of or notice when I was originally presenting it. While watching it some of the things that I think I did well on where first my talking. This is something that I know I did better on because I did my presentation a little different from everyone else. Another thing that I think worked well for my presentation was the word to picture ratio. I felt like I did a good job not putting my entire script on the screen but enough to give the class a good summery about what I was talking about. For the aforementioned reasons, there is no doubt that fears and shy had been controlled myself throughout the years. According to The People’s Almanac presents The Book of Lists by David Wallechinsky, Irving and Amy Wallace, one of the topic was titled “The 14 Worst Human Fears”, and the fear of speaking in public is the first fear of all fears (Richard I. Garber, 2009). This make me realized that it is perfectly normal to feel anxiety and fears to speak. Everyone, even an experienced speakers has some anxiety when speaking in front of a group of people. As for my experience and situation, I should have just fight the fears in me to throw my voice out asking questions in class otherwise I would might left behind a bit and need to struggle up for the subjects more than everyone does. PowerPoint has many benefits. Given its many available formats and ease of changing the layout and style of all of the slides simultaneously through changes to a master slide it is easy to put together a presentation, much easier than the mediums it remediates such as actual slides or overhead projector pages. Using PowerPoint to create and organize visual aids for an information intense talk can be incredibly useful in both the education and business worlds. People who may have not have used visual aids in the past are able to explain their business ideas or present their lectures in a clear, visually interesting way. People who have experience with older visual aid mediums are now able to do it in a much easier way. PowerPoint allows speakers to better engage their audience, including more images and video into their presentations. Still images and video capture visual interest which allows the speaker to better get her/his points across to an audience.
Consultants must possess a variety of skills that help to enable them to provide the best advisory services to their clients. Two of the important skills that contribute to their profession and ability to perform the required work are data gathering and presentation skills. Exceptional presentation proficiency is especially necessary because it is essential throughout the engagement. These skills are used to pitch to clients, communicate to the staff especially in the data gathering period, to present their recommendations and persuade their clients to implement their proposal, and also to speak at conferences, workshops and training sessions.
The selected methods should relate to the audience learning styles, levels of expertise, and achievement of the behavioral objectives. The most common teaching method is the basic lecture format followed by a question-and-answer period. Thus, a variety of other teaching methods such as the use of facilitated videos, skill training, case scenarios, poster presentations, study guides, games, pre and post tests, group break-out sessions, abstract presentations, self-learning packages, role-play, and computer-assisted instruction can be utilized. A format relevant to the audience and program content which promotes participant involvement fosters active learning, and provides diversity for learning styles should be selected. Large groups often prefer slides or video enhancement in contrary to smaller groups where workbooks, overheads, group discussions, or slides can be used.
While sitting in my speech class at Harbor College, I watched my classmates give introductory speeches in front of the class. Some of the students were swaying back and forth-, which made it difficult to view them. A few of them were tapping their fingers on the podium. As I can recall, one female continuously tapped her long nails on the table (to me this became a nuisance). What I noticed most was that many of them could not keep still-only 5 people out of the 30 produced smooth speeches, those that were confident and had previous experience. From my observation, it was evident that they were nervous and scared.
Oral presentations allows students to verbalize knowledge and use oral communication skills. Examples include interviews, speeches, skits, debates, and dramatizations.
Before presenting, make sure to practice beforehand on your own speech to give yourself an idea or backbone of what your speech will consist of. This method works great since it helps the speaker concern less about themselves and their information, and helps them interact and
Nealy and my parents helped me tremendously over the years to overcome my fear. I stayed after school to practice in front of Mrs. Nealy and a small group of my closest friends. My parents recorded my speeches so that I could watch my body language and practice over and over again. My sister, although 3 years younger than I was, provided me with many funny but ingenious comments that help me to learn. I practiced in the shower, in front of the mirror, and everywhere else I could before each presentations. It wasn’t easy; however, as the years went by, I felt more confident and comfortable speaking in front of groups. I have learned the valuable techniques from Maya Angelou that said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. With each of my speeches over the years, I have tried to incorporate some funny or heart warming stories to keep my audience engaging and always remembered Mrs. Nealy’s advice that I didn’t need to memorize every word from my speech, but just to prepare an outline, be interesting, and try to have
Throughout the semester I became a more confident public speaker. The first assignment that we had to do for our education class was to introduce our self. I practiced what I was going to say and how I was going to say it that weekend. However, when I got up to present my mind went completely blank. Throughout the course of the semester I learned what I need to have up with me when I present do that I do not blank on what I wanted to say. In the beginning when I got up to present my heart was racing and my hands were shaking. Now I make sure I breathe and tell myself that I know what I am going to talk about. So I still don’t talking in public but I feel more comfortable doing it. I need to work on being more confident when I have to present a topic. Talking to Mrs. Nealy after my mini lesson I have more confidence when I am talking about a math concept than any other topic. Throughout the semester my writing skills have greatly improved. The thing I need to work on is managing my time better so that I have more time to edit my papers.
Practice is a major role that needs to be played when it comes to presenting. Practicing, I feel gives you more confidence in your speech, and more preparation than if you were to not practice. Rehearsing before the speech then presenting makes you seem like you actually know what you are talking about even if the only reason you know all these facts is because of study and practicing. Practicing through my speech really helps me with my presentation, if I practice enough, I feel very confident to where I wouldn’t need t a paper to look at notes during the speech. This concept is important for anything. Practicing will always help you with any future task.
