The world of education today is ever changing. Throughout all of the mandates and political arguments over education, teachers are still expected to be effective. Teachers must shape the lives of each of their students and are increasingly held accountable for their efforts. With heavier mandates for teachers, their abilities may seem stifled as frustrations and tensions intensify. With these responsibilities, changes and mandates, a new teacher does not stand a chance to be successful without guidance and support. Therefore, a well strategically planned induction plan is vital to this process. According to Portner (2005), “Successful induction programs are complex systems supported at all levels of the education process, from the state level, to district administrators and school principals, to individual colleagues in each school.” A new teacher induction program simply orientates new teachers to the rituals and routines of a school. It should be conducted prior to a new teacher entering the classroom. New teachers must be properly trained and supported in order to have a chance to succeed in the classroom. Research indicates that teachers leave the profession for a number of reasons; however, one of the main reasons is lack of proper training and support. According to Jones & Frank (2013), “Success for both beginning general and special education teachers depends on their ability to achieve multiple goals: they must (a) acquire instructional and classroom management skills, (b) become familiar with district curricula, and (c) adapt to the professional norms and procedures of their individual schools.” Teachers are often overwhelmed by the responsibilities that set in once they enter the classroom. It doesn’t matter what type of preparation program a teacher has matriculated through and how well prepared the teacher thinks he/she is for the job, if a support system is not in place, that teacher will more than likely fail.
Teaching is very difficult with all of the mandates that have been placed on teachers. Teachers learn while they are on the job. I spent my volunteer experience with Dr. Geis’ special needs classroom at County Elementary School; and throughout my participation, the most defining observation was that of the teachers and staff members. Naturally, some employees are better than others at fulfilling tasks. However, as time passed, I noticed that certain employees had difficulty starting each day fresh, free of the pressure and tension that may have accumulated from the previous day. I only volunteered a couple of times a week so my ability to wipe the slate clean was easier. Nevertheless, I can understand how taxing and repetitive the process can be for the full length of a school year. According to the National Commission on Teaching about, “one-third of all new teachers leave after three years, and 46 percent are gone within five years” (Kopkowski). The relatively high attrition rate of teachers is known as teacher burnout. Teacher burnout can be attributed to both physical and emotional factors which may include, “classroom disruptions, inadequate salaries, oversized classes, overbearing parents, excessive paperwork, cutbacks in supplies or materials, threats, harassment, assaults, violence, or problems with co-workers or with administrators” (Campbell). The National Commission on Teaching estimates costs up to, “$7 billion a year, as districts and states recruit, hire, and try to retain new teachers” (Kopkowski). Teacher burnout is financially and socially affecting schools, communities, and society. The purpose of this paper is to identify factors that may lead to teacher burnout, acknowledge the effects of the issue, and provide solutions to better manage the stress of teaching.
Do you ever imagine the effects on history if colonialism had occurred any differently? What if the methods that the Portuguese/Spanish used to manage their colonies were switched to the methods of the English? Do you think that it would make that big of a difference? This compels us to compare and contrast the colonial experiences of the English and the Spanish/Portuguese, particularly with the relations with the indigenous population and government/economics. The English Crown did not prioritize using large degrees of supervision over their colonies; therefore, the English colonies’ experience differs largely from the Spanish/Portugal’s colonial experience.
Several of the major reform initiatives of the 1980s and early 1990s argued that improving education requires improving teacher quality and, accordingly, teacher education. Numerous changes in teacher recruitment, preparation, and certification were proposed. (For a detailed list, see Hartley, Mantle-Bromley, and Cobb 1996.) In response to the calls for reform, general teacher education programs raised admission standards/exit requirements; revised curricula to reflect multiculturalism and new K-12 standards; paid more attention to pedagogy, teaching practice, and relevance; included clinical experiences in public schools and other learning environments; and proposed new model standards/principles for licensing beginning teachers (Lynch 1997).
The first day of field marks the beginning of a new teaching experience, and for that reason, the first day of field will forever be a nerve-wracking day for me. On September 13, 2016, I, Mr. Cataldo began a new teaching journey, at Carlstadt Public School, a suburban school, in Carlstadt, New Jersey—Mrs. Mariano’s sixth-grade language arts literacy classroom. The most important reason public schools provide an excellent education is that teachers are required to be highly qualified and suited for the job. In a society where kids must go to school up to the collegiate level, teaching is an impactful career choice. Teachers help contour the minds of future leaders of the world. Furthermore, teachers play a crucial role in guiding students to the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to succeed in life, and teachers lead students to make informed decisions on any topic the meet in the future. Along these two weeks we have been prompt to make a recall to our own way of learning and why we became a teacher: Was it because coincidence, due to life circumstances, maybe because family tradition, was it a conscious decision or because someone influenced us? Whatever the answer is, we have to face reality and be conscious that being a teacher does not only means to teach a lesson and asses students learning. It requires playing the different roles a teacher must perform whenever is needed and required by our learners, identify our pupils needs and preferences, respecting their integrity and individuality but influencing and motivating them to improve themselves and become independent.
Education is an ever-changing part of society. A classroom teacher is faced with new challenges and obstacles that have never been dealt with before. Students come to the classroom with different life stories. Every student has strengths and weaknesses that surface in the classroom environment. Teachers must understand and focus on utilizing each student's strengths and work to improve weaknesses. Students learn in a variety of ways. The classroom must be a safe zone that appreciates student's viewpoints and allows room for mistakes. When topics in the classroom are related to "real-life" experiences, the information is more likely to be retained. Students learn from one another. The ideas and perspectives that each student brings to the classroom can bring insight into what is being learned. Students have to be allowed to explore new ideas, try them to see if they work, and sometimes fail. When students are encouraged to explore, they begin the process of becoming lifelong learners.
In this course I experienced an important change in my beliefs about teaching; I came to understand that there are many different theories and methods that can be tailored to suit the teacher and the needs of the student. The readings, especially those from Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), have helped me to understand this in particular. In composing my essay about teaching methods and other themes, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened by my research and my writing skills honed.
As I reflect on my experiences observing in three different classrooms over the last three months, I cannot express how much I have learned by being in the classroom. I began the Master of Science in Education last fall and previous to the practicum experience I had taken 8 classes. I read books, listened to the experiences of my classmates and instructors, reflected on my own education, and tried to imagine how this information was going to prepare me to face a classroom of elementary school students. While I learned theories and skills that should be known by any educator, these classes could not teach me what I most desired to know: what tangible steps could I take to correctly implement all of the correct ways of teaching.
