Oscar De La Hoya was born on February 4, 1973 in Montebello, East Los Angeles, California. His parents were Mexican immigrants who moved to the U.S. a few months before Oscar was born. His father Joel De La Hoya Sr. was a warehouse clerk at a heating and cooling company and his mother Cecilia was a seamstress by trade. Oscar had two siblings an older brother named Joel Jr. and a younger sister named Ceci. Boxing was in De la Hoyas blood, it was a family tradition, his paternal grandfather Vicente, had been an amateur boxer in Mexico and his father been a professional boxer himself. At the tender age of 6 his father began to train him and he would often have fights with other young neighborhood boys. By the time Oscar was 11 he was participating and winning in several competitions, at 15 he won his first National Junior Boxing title and the following year he became National Golden Gloves champion.

Oscar was six when he had his first fight against his cousin, and failed miserably he never imagined himself becoming a boxer. He was forced to go to the gym and practice since boxing has been a tradition in their family. He discovered that his left hand was very powerful and began to train on it. In 1992, he made it to the Olympics and promised his mother a gold medal which he achieved with victory.

All of these factors play a large role in Braddock’s decision when he is given a once in a lifetime chance of returning to the boxing world, if only for one more fight. Braddock rises to the occasion, despite his own health. The lesson that one can take from Braddock is to never give up and be relentless in ensuring a better future. Braddock never let his injuries stop him from bringing home a few measly dollars for his family. Even when his life is on the line, Braddock smiles and promises endless happy tomorrows to his children.
Being a professional boxer didn’t do much for his mental health because he says he would feel on top of the world and yet so lonely at the same time after a fight. Therefore, he suffered not only the physical demands, but the mental demands in the professional arena of the sport.
Muhammad Ali was a man made to box. He had a great career before him since he made his first professional fight under President Eisenhower presidency. His Professional Career was really impressive. His had a great balance and was able to move his hands and feet in great speed and coordination. Ali was said to dance in the ring while destroying his opponents. Ali started fighting at a very short age, and his first teacher was Joe Martin (Hauser 18). Through hard work and discipline, he became a professional fighter and eventually the Heavyweight champion of the world. Although he lost the title twice, he regained it three times, putting him in the history books. His boxing career was put to an end when he started suffering from Parkinson's disease. This was the end of his boxing, but his greatness will never die.
Shortly after winning the Gold Medal, Ali started looking for better opportunities by saying, “that was my last amateur fight, I’m turning pro, but I don’t know exactly how. I want a good contract with a good manager.” Ali felt that he was on top of the world after winning in the Olympics and felt confident that people of the U.S. would be proud of his accomplishment as he brought home the “Gold”. What Ali would return to find wasn’t anything like he had expected.
Successful is a simple word, however, the meaning of this word changes quite often. Each person has a different definition of success and that definition can change depending on the situation. Bob Dylan once wrote, “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.” This a very broad definition of success and should not be used. The definition of success should be “the pursued goals have been adequately accomplished.”
