The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao focuses on gender and the role gender has on the characters lives. The characters of this book are also one way or another impacted by the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. The major themes of this book were topics we have focused in class. The themes of machismo and the effects of Rafael Trujillo affected the latino population even in the United States. Oscar struggles to find out who he is, he is a dark skinned, overweight, nerdy guy. He is plagued with the trying to live up the reputation of being a Dominican man. The men in his family encourage Oscar to be dominant, sexual, and masculine. Oscar does not have those characteristic and leads others to assume he is not Dominican. Rafael Trujillo, as we learned in class, was one of the harshest dictators in the country. During his rule, he was responsible for around 50 thousand deaths (Class notes, Dominicans), The legacy of Rafael Trujillo, plagued Dominican men for years after his death. Beli has alway wanted to leave and go somewhere else but due to the strictness of Trujillo's regime she was unable to leave the island, like many other Dominicans. Rafael Trujillo had numerous issues with who he wanted in the country and who he did not want in the country. The most rememberable citizenship issues was the Parsley massacre. This was when Trujillo wanted to get rid of the Haitians living in his country. He sent out his army to go kill anyone who looked Haitian or could not pronounce the word parsley in spanish. This resulted in the death of around 30 thousand people (Class Notes, Parsley Massacre). But trujillo was opening the borders for people from Europe, those that could whiten the island (Class notes, Rafael Trujillo).
