Are Arranged Marriages Out-of-Date?
Are arranged marriages already out-of-date today? Should young people abandon arranged marriages? Surprisingly, far from being abandoned, young people are reshaping the tradition of arranged marriages in recent decades. They call it “assisted arranged marriage”. This new style arranged marriage is going to become more popular among the young people.
Some people may ask what “arranged marriage” is. In short, it is a kind of tradition in which young people do not have any freedom or any right choosing their spouses. Their parents or elders help them to make decision that whom they need marry with. “Arranged marriage” used to be common worldwide until the 18th century.
However, in more recent times, the arranged marriage has changed into a new style that called by “assisted arranged marriage”. Because those standards which the parents sifting on similar backgrounds, such as education and income levels, religious beliefs and character, influence the similar values. They realized that the similar values are more important than the physical attraction and love. As the author of “Arranged Marriages Get a Little Rearranging” Alvarez said, “The young people also recognize that arranged marriages -- in which similar education and income levels, religious beliefs and character outweigh the importance of physical attraction -- can well outlast love marriages.” (Alvarez) In her article, interviewee, Vani Gupta, 30, a speed dater said, “Our mums look at the C.V.'s. They figure out whether we're compatible on paper -- right job, right background, right caste. It's nice to know your parents have done the work for you. You feel more secure. ”
