The word it is once mention in our NCO Creed: No one is more professional than I, I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a Leader of Soldiers. It is our responsibilities as leaders, to coach, guide and teach every Soldier that we are able to reach. We have manuals that provide enough knowledge and understanding of what does it take be a leader. The ADP and ADRP are tools that we need to read and overcome our weakness. Self-development should be part of our daily basis. We need to develop the Core Leader Competencies, and through that, we will build trust and confidence in our people and subordinates. Destructive leaders will always be there, but as effective leaders, we need to recognize those destructive leaders, and call their attention. Destructive leader has the chance to either change or get out of our formations. Do not fear to be that leader that sets the standards and discipline, be that
The purpose of this memorandum is to outline my view point on leadership. On a warm San Diego night in May of 1988, not smart enough to know whether I should be scared or excited, I embarked on my military career standing atop yellow footprints neatly painted on the asphalt. As an eighteen year-old kid entering recruit training, the finer points of leadership, at any level, had not yet piqued my curiosity. The drill instructors who supervised my training placed far different leadership expectations on me than what I will face as a colonel in the Air Force. Having learned a lot, good and bad, along the way, I realize that I must adapt to make good decisions and effectively lead at the senior level. Dr. Gene Kamena’s Right to Lead Assessment Model (RLAM) provides a handy, visual means to think about leadership, and assess how one can grow as a leader. Using the RLAM, I can concentrate xxxxxx My current leadership skills and abilities have enabled me to thrive at the tactical and operational level; however, in order to succeed
“Military leadership qualities are formed in a progressive and sequential series of carefully planned training, educational, and experiential events—far more time-consuming and expensive than similar training in industry or government. Secondly, military leaders tend to hold high levels of responsibility and authority at low levels of our organizations. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, military leadership is based on a concept of duty, service, and self-sacrifice; we take an oath to that effect.”
The U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences, known as ARI, interviewed 41 active duty Army leaders. Most of the Army leaders interviewed acknowledged using strengths-based techniques to some extent, often without obvious knowledge of strengths-based leadership (Key-Roberts, 2014). Nevertheless, several soldiers have found the techniques as being very effective. Army superiors can use strength based leadership to develop juniors by identifying strengths, providing personalized feedback, capitalizing on subordinate strong attributes, building and maintaining a positive atmosphere, caring for subordinates, and empowering the young leaders (Key-Roberts, 2014).
For some time the Army has been using a certain expression to defines what an Army leader actually is. To keep it basic, the three words be, know and do explains it all!
Enable Others to Act – leaders actively engage individuals and make an effort to generate an ambience of trust and self-esteem.
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. The journal entries along with the understanding of available leadership theories have been an integral part of my learning during this course. For all of the journals and assessments that I completed, I feel it has given me a good understanding of my current leadership status and my future potential as a leader. All of the specific assessments looked at several areas in regards to leadership; these assessments covered several separate focus areas and identified my overall strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over the course of this paper I will briefly discuss each one of these assessments and journal entries as they pertained to me and my leadership.
Great leaders are few and far between, but everyone possesses the power to be a good leader. I have only been in the military for about three and a half years; most of this time has been spent at CMR St-Jean and RMCC. I have yet to be put into any major leadership roles, but from what I have been able to accomplish in regards to leading others and the leaders that I have been able observe over the last few years, I have started to slowly figure out what type of leader I would like to become. According to Johns and Saks (2014) leadership is, “The influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context” (206). From past experience, influencing others to do something can be complicated at times but can be accomplished by staying focused on the task at hand. The leadership roles I have been able to take part in have brought me to the conclusion that cohesion is the core factor of how I lead.
To perform well as a leader, the leader must identify individual strengths, weaknesses, and potential; acquire knowledge of leadership, power, influence, and authority to get the right things done at the right time.
There are many different things I think of when I think of what leadership means to me. My idea of leadership is to be able to inspire others, get them excited to do something, motivate them and set an example to others. I also think that showing respect to others is a key part of leadership. You don’t just need leadership qualities, but you need to be a successful leader. To me being a successful leader is being able to have people follow you and not disrespect you. If you are a great leader your followers start to respect you more. To be a leader you also need to have certain qualities like being sociable, intelligent, have patience to deal with situations. A leader needs to be motivated or they will be a failure. I think I show leader ship all the time inside and outside of school. “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way (John C. Maxwell).
The U.S. Army is continuing to downsize the force, which emphasizes the type of training and better quality of soldiers that are to remain in the military. The military is steady evolving and improving based upon the requirements that are asked of it as a whole by the U. S. government. Highlighting the importance of the type of adaptive leaders that continue to progress in their careers and becoming the new generation of the senior leadership that is looked at by the younger enlisted for guidance and mentorship is what is important.
