Attributes of a Leader
Miracle, Zachary T.
Each leader in the army has attributes, which are character, presence, and intellect. The way each leader interprets the attributes is how they develop their own leadership style. The purpose of leader attributes is to give us guidelines of things we obtain. Attributes of a Non-Commissioned Officer are what makes us unique. We all have attributes as a leader, which are character, presence, and intellect. The three key leader attributes are there to guide us on who we should be as leaders for those who look to us for answers. However, each individual leader is different in his or her own way. We do not have to use the guidelines to follow and convey ourselves as the same. Leaders can take the attributes

Character entails Army Values, Empathy, Warrior Ethos/Service Ethos, and Discipline. The army values show not only leaders, soldiers, but family as well things we can follow to be accountable for our lives. Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless-Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage are values all styles of leadership should possess. Empathy is the ability to understand others and what they are feeling. Having empathy lets our soldiers know that we care and will always place their needs above our own. The warrior ethos is necessary to being a leader as well as a soldier first. Discipline is abiding by rules or things set in place. It sets the example for soldiers to follow. Doing all of the things that word character holds makes a great leader. Character can be perceived differently and used in a way that makes a leader unique. The character we have can guide soldiers to be the same leader we …show more content…
Intellect is having the knowledge. Intellect entails Mental Agility, Sound Judgement, Innovation, Interpersonal tact, and Expertise. Mental agility is being able to overcome and adapt to mentally strenuous challenges or obstacles. Being mentally agile allows you to keep a cool and collected thought process throughout tough moments. Sound judgement can be helpful to think positively and think thoroughly through any given situation. In addition, having the ability to think through obstacles with sound judgement aids mental agility. Innovation can be anything from thinking up an idea to actually carrying out the act. Innovation is crucial to being an intellectual leader. Interpersonal tact helps us overcome any diversity in our lives as well as stabilize and balance any arising issues. Expertise is the most important of all sub-topics under intellect. You have to be a knowledgeable leader as well as an expert in your profession. All of the intellect sub-topics are about being mentally fit. Without a healthy mind, we cannot think thoroughly and carry out our jobs as
Part 1, The Basics of Leadership, Chapter 1 covers Fundamentals of Leadership while Roles and Relationships are covered in Chapter 2. This section describes and depicts levels of Leadership. We as a military are set apart from other non-military professions in that Soldiers must be prepared to use deadly force and have the courage required to close with and destroy the enemy. All leaders, from non-commissioned officers and warrant officers, to commissioned officers, inherently possess a great responsibility. The repercussions of decisions and actions impact the lives of Soldiers and their families. Additionally, these decisions affect the battlefield environment including enemy and non-combatants, both military and
Justice, judgement, decisiveness, integrity, dependability, tact, initiative, enthusiasm, bearing, unselfishness, courage, knowledge, loyalty and endurance – these 14 leadership traits serve as the foundation upon which every Marine will build themselves to be an astute and practical leader the Corps strives to cultivate. Developing these traits is a continuous process throughout our service. They serve as a guide through every situation, from the routine in garrison, to extensive and elaborate combat operations.
Integrity and servant-leadership are a huge part of being a leader. A leader needs integrity because this is a huge part of being dependable and trustworthy. An example of integrity is when a leader says they are going to do something, then they actually follow through with what they said. A leader with integrity will be consistent in all of his/her actions. Their values and principles will match what their methods are. Being a servant-leader means that the leader does not see themselves as being too good to do the tasks they ask of their followers. A servant-leader will do the task even if it seems below them. An example of a leader is a nurse. A nurse is a leader to a certified nursing assistant (CNA). A nurse can be a servant-leader by bathing a patient and changing the bedding, even though this is usually the job of a CNA, this nurse did not see themselves as too good to do some "dirty" work. A leader is willing to help out and follow through. Both of these characteristics help the followers trust the leader. This also helps build a firm foundation for a good relationship between the leader and the followers.
I strive as a leader and a person to live fully each day, laugh often and love intensely. I strive every day to have more patience, to say kinder words, to gossip less, be a good friend, good teacher, and a good mentor. In addition, I try not to be too hard on myself when I do not always succeed at those things, which is often I might add! Then I remind myself to remember that all I can do is try harder next time and learn from my mistakes and hope that my soldier see that I am imperfect and just as they are. I think that really what my leadership philosophy is to be the best leader that I can be and strive to maintain the army standards and follow the basic
Whenever a leader is near, soldiers should be able to identify that leader right away. They know from how that leader is every day; they way that that leader carries him or herself. They know that leaders accomplishments, confidence, and professionalism; or at least the potential of the aforementioned.
It can also be one that is of a gift that God has given us. Deuteronomy 1:15, “So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes” (King James Bible). I believe that we are having some type of leadership in us and it just has to come out. I also believe that some were ordained by God to be leaders over us to make us better leaders in his kingdom. So as Soldiers we have those leaders that we make us better leaders to lead others as we grow in the military or outside of
In the conclusion, three attributes are important elements that form a profession in the Army. Soldiers become better leaders because of their well trained and educated. Soldiers are more expert on what and how to do the jobs. Army also learned from mistakes and developed concepts to earn the trust back from people. Moreover; Army adopt values to shape its structure
Soldiers must now mind their own career, ignoring anyone else that may be an inconvenience. These soldiers are eventually raised up to become our leaders by other leaders who recognize their potential to improve

It will clearly define what character means to the United States Army and identify values instilled in an Army professional throughout their career. Other attributes of a leader are selflessness, knowledge, organization, humility, and trust. Perhaps the most difficult part of being a leader is knowing that each decision you make will h...
One of the most important components of leadership is the leader. A leader is responsible for his or her followers and the overall goal of the group or organization. Leaders are the people held accountable or everything that happens, good or bad. On the other hand, the second major component of leadership is the followers. Without followers, a leader would be worthless. Followers make up the backbone of a leader because they are the masses that get goals accomplished. A leader is just one person, but the number of followers is countless. In order to be an effective follower, there are a countless number of characteristics that allow a follower to be the best they can be. Five of these characteristics include a positive attitude, communication skills, being part of the process, being open to new ideas, and patience.
Today’s Army is ever changing, and with it requires leaders to adapt and change with it. However, a leader should only have to adjust his or her style slightly. To account for the changes, while maintaining alignment with their leadership philosophy. While philosophies vary from leader to leader, to me there are three core characteristics which I strive to lead, mentor, and develop Soldiers from. These characteristics are, integrity, consistency, and adaptive.
To be a good leader you must be strong-minded, but more importantly you have to be intelligent. Someone who is smart can back up his or her statements with fact. If someone is intelligent people are more likely to listen to their ideas before someone who is less intelligent. If one is intelligent they have the ability to instruct a group properly. And if one is intelligent they can organize all of the groups projects better the a less intelligent person.
Leadership is not a one size fits all type of thing. Each person has his or her own styles of leadership that develops over time. Even though there are many different style of leadership, one thing that most leaders have in common are their values. All leaders want the best for those that they lead, and they want to successfully accomplish the task that they are given. In the military, a leader’s ethics are what guide them in day-to-day life and sometimes in life or death situations.
Another aspect of leadership includes leadership traits such as being influential and inspirational. There also different contexts of leadership, e.g, leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organizations. Some traits that are often associated with being an effective leader include a measure of intelligence, high energy, self confidence, dominance, and a need for achievement. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully.
