Army leaders must influence their soldiers to carry out mission goals that are set before them. These same leaders have a plethora of methods that they may employ to obtain these results. In my 16 years of experience, I have found that I gravitate to certain methods of influence time after time. This being because of greater success rates, ease of combination, and greater team unity. Each method I use has both strengths and weaknesses under different situations. The ability to understand these strengths and weaknesses become a crucial aspect of knowing when to employ them. The five methods I use are rationalizing, inspiring, negotiating, bridging, and asserting. Inspiration involves several different little aspects such as staying positive, setting goals, encouraging, and listening to others as mentioned by Hite, Nandedkar, Mercer & Martin (2014). These leaders work with the team hand in hand to reach the goals needed as oppose to just delegating what needs to be performed. Being part of the team also creates a sense of common ground, exemplifies what the leader is trying to portray and proves to the team that anything the influencer is asking for is capable. Individuals tend to work well with this method because they do not feel that they are being taken advantage of, performing mundane tasks that are unnecessary, and feel as if their ideas and opinions are relevant (Bernard, 1988). Even though this works well in the sense of creating bonds within groups, this method takes time to develop and is not something that occurs over a short period of time. When comparing my Big Five Personality scores to the class average, I received a score of 6 and the average was 5.7, one score did not come to a surprise. My personality is reliant on my strength of conscientiousness. Individuals who score high in conscientiousness tend to be methodical, well-organized, achievement orientated, and ethically guided. The conscientious personality type has a strong correlation to leader emergence which I can attest is true. I often am the first individual in the group to take reigns because of my organization, self-discipline, and need to create a plan before acting.

My two strengths in the profession of arms are direction and recognition. I am strong in giving directions because I am very detailed and specific in giving orders (KAI-theory). Giving good directions in relation to deliberate leadership will help in providing subordinates a well thought out plan to further develop them into future leaders. My methodical approach discovered in the Team Dimension Profile will also be a great benefit when trying to develop a step by step plan. When I provide directions for a task or plan I try not to assume people already know things especially if it is something new or haven't been discussed in awhile. I also give my subordinates the opportunity to ask questions and ensure they fully understand the task before exiting the conversation. I also believe it is important to recognize your people. Recognizing your people in relation to deliberate leadership will help to motivate and encourage subordinates in their journey as the strive to reach their goals. I have worked hard this past year to put my people in for awards and programs. Recognizing your people shows that you acknowledge and appreciate their contributions to the organization.
The Army spends a great deal of time making followers into leaders and leaders into followers by utilizing several levels of training throughout their military career. The two most effective influence tactics are rational persuasion and inspirational appeals. Inspirational appeals are the most effective when used by a superior influencing a subordinate. This type of tactic is unlikely to bring about negative actions by the target. They tend to appeal to the influencers positive emotions of enthusiasm and loyalty. Rational persuasion can be used in upward, lateral, or downward influence, and is a very versatile tactic. It has a low likelihood to cause negative reactions as well. It appeals to the intellectual and rationality side of the target, and doesn’t attack them on a personal level.
Self-disciplined people are masters of their impulses. This mastery comes from the habit of doing the right thing. Self-discipline allows Army leaders to do the right thing regardless of the consequences for them or their subordinates. Under the extreme stress of combat, you and your team might be cut off and alone, fearing for your lives, and having to act without guidance or knowledge of what’s going on around you. Still, you—the leader—must think clearly and act reasonably. Self-discipline is the key to this kind of behavior.
