How Leaders Care For Soldiers Army leadership can be defined as being able to lead soldiers by providing them purpose direction and motivation as I learned back when I was a PVT studying army leadership for boards and my personal development. An effective army leader needs to develop themselves in key areas that will help motivate soldiers to follow them. These areas include but are not limited to, character, presence and intellect. Development of these key areas will greatly enhance a leader’s ability to influence their subordinates. The ability to influence your soldiers will give a leader success in accomplishing any mission.

An army leader must possess character. “Character, comprised of a person’s moral and ethical qualities, helps determine what is right and gives a leader motivation to do what is appropriate, regardless of the circumstances or consequences” (ADRP 6-22 3-1). Having presence greatly increases your effectiveness as a leader because your presence alone demands respect. Areas a leader must develop to be able to have a positive command presences are military bearing, physical fitness, confidence and resilience. “Leaders illustrate through their presence that they care if your soldiers feel like you don’t care you are failing as a leader. There is no greater inspiration than leaders who routinely share in team hardships and dangers with their subordinates. Being where subordinates perform duties allows the leader to have firsthand knowledge of the real conditions Soldiers and Army Civilians face. Presence is a critical attribute.” (ADRP 6-22 4-1) One of the most fulfilling times in my life was leading my team down rang where we were in danger and everyday was a hardship.
