Aristotle was one of the greatest philosophers in Ancient Greece. His analysis of tragic plays have led to the general outline for a tragic hero in multiple stories, plays, and movies. Aristotle believed that in every tragic hero they should have five main character traits.One being that the main charcter should be wise or of noble birth. The second and most obvious trait a tragic hero must have is a fatal flaw, or otherwise known as Hamartia. Another trait is peripeteia and anagnorisis , which is when a tragic hero has a reversal of fortune due to an error they made and when a tragic hero realizes their misfortune is of their own making.The fifth and final trait is that a tragic hero must have a fate that is far greater than what they truly deserved. In 1999, a movie called the Gladiator was made. Maximum was the protagonist of the movie. He was considered the best general to have served in the roman army and was respected by all of the soldiers in the army. However there was one man who did not like him , his name was Commodus. Commodus wanted to rule but his father, the king didn’t see him fit and choose Maximum instead. The movie goes on from there and the story of Maximum is told. Although Maximum might apply to some , he doesn’t apply to all . Maximum is not born of noble birth and at times he does show widom but there is also other times when he isn’t so wise. He also didn’t get a fate far greater than what he truly deserved. Some might think he did since a scene in the movie shows him going with his family. However I don’t really consider dying in the colosseum , a good fate. Maximum also didn’t realize his error before he died. His peripatetia is when he didn’t accept Marcus Aurelius offer. Maximum peripatetia and fatal flaw, his mercy, are the only things from the list that applies to
