A hero often times experience a downfall, but confronts the situation in a way that causes them to be given the title of a tragic hero. John is a protagonist of the play and portrayed as an ordinary man while he actually has many tragic flaws that lead to his death. Adultery is a crime committed by John with Abigail Williams which creates a strain in his relationship with his wife Elizabeth. His wife brings up the affair often and tells John she thinks he is ashamed of what he has done, she says to him “John, have you ever shown her somewhat of contempt? She cannot pass you in the church but you will blush...I think you be somewhat ashamed, for I am there, and she so close,” obviously Elizabeth is jealous of what has happened and brings it up to John (Miller 493). He is unable to put this act behind him which causes him to confess to his crime. Hubris is a trait seen during this time because he committed the crime and is extremely guilty of the situation. Anagnorisis is also seen within John when he confesses of the crime he tells Danforth that “I have known her...I have known her,” meaning that he has perpetrated the crime of adultery and feels the need to admit to it (Miller 519). John realizes he needs to confess to show everyone Abigail is not as innocent as she makes herself look. His guilt also leads him to confess and he realizes that he needs to tell Danforth. He puts his reputation behind him and admits his …show more content…
Most heroes do not die by the end of the story but Proctor undergoes a reversal of fate which is another characteristic called Peripeteia. Nemesis is also shown since his reputation was too valuable that he had to face the punishment of being hanged. Proctor is the protagonist of the story, therefore, the readers feel a sense of sorrow for John because he was forced to die which represents catharsis, especially since this was not expected. Miller creates John Proctor to represent a tragic hero through his flaws of not signing his name on the paper and by confessing to adultery and this led to his
First John Proctor is a tragic hero because he is loving and loyal . “I will bring you home. I will bring you soon” and “I will fall like an ocean on that court! fear nothing Elizabeth.” John says this when Elizabeth is brought to jail from their house. It shows the love he has for her and he will do anything for her to get her back home. John goes to the court to tell judge Danforth that Elizabeth is innocent and that Abigail is lying and wants Elizabeth murdered “I do, sir. I believe she means to murder.” John going to the court is showing his loyalty and love towards Elizabeth knowing she is innocent and never tell lies she always tell the truth. John says “In her life, sir, she has never lied. There are them that cannot sing, and them that cannot weep-my wife cannot lie. I have
Early on in the play, the reader comes to understand that John Proctor has had an affair with Abigail Williams while she was working in his home. Abigail believed that if she got rid of Elizabeth Proctor, then John Proctor would become her own. John Proctor had an affair with Abigail, but for him it was just lust, while Abigail believed it to be true love. She told John Proctor that she loved him, and once she destroys Elizabeth, they would be free to love one another. John is horrified at this, but can do nothing to convince Abigail that he is not in love with her. Because of Abigail's twisted plot to secure John for herself, Elizabeth is arrested. John Proctor has to wrestle with the decision of what to do. He knows that he has sinned; yet he does not want to hurt his beloved wife. This is partly why he is willing to die. He knows he has already sinned.
When it comes to being a tragic hero the character has to have the qualities of being a tragic hero. A tragic hero is where the main character of a tragedy whose fatal flaw leads to his or her destruction. Either the character was born into society as a great man or a slave, they may have carry
A tragic hero is a noble man who commits a fatal flaw. The hero’s downfall is a result of their choices which leads to a punishment that exceeds the crime. “The difference between Proctor and Willy Loman is enormous; the former is the rather typical tragic hero who is defiant to the end, the latter is trapped in submission and is living a lie” (McGill 4). John Proctor is one of the main characters in The Crucible. he is married to Elizabeth Proctor and they live in Salem. In Arthur Miller’s famous play, The Crucible, John Proctor represents a classic tragic hero because he is a well respected man of noble stature, he is conflicted because of his fatal flaw, and his downfall is a result of his own choices.
In The Crucible, John Proctor is considered the anti-hero. Honest and humble, Proctor is a good man, but one with a secret, fatal flaw. He has fallen for Abigail Williams leading to her jealousy of Elizabeth, Proctor’s wife. Once the trials begin, Proctor realizes that he can terminate Abigail’s accusations; however, he can only do so if ha admits hi own guilt. Proctor is a proud man who places great emphasis on his reputation and such an admission would ruin that. He eventually makes an attempt to name Abigail as a sham without revealing the crucial information. When this attempt fails, he finally breaks out with a confession, calling Abigail a “whore”...
John Proctor is an honest, though harsh, man who is clearly the protagonist of The Crucible. Before the beginning of the play, John had an affair with Abigail Williams, a girl who worked in his household, which was abruptly ended when Elizabeth Proctor, John's wife, fired her. This event causes Abigail to desire revenge against Elizabeth while she still pines for John. Once the trials are well underway, Abigail accuses Elizabeth of being a witch, which leads to her arrest. John goes to the court in defense of his wife, where he reveals that he did indeed committed adultery with Abigail in an attempt to expose her as a fraud and a liar. Unfortunately, John's appeal falls on deaf ears and he is arrested as well. While his wife manages to get a temporary stay of execution, due to the fact that she is pregnant at the time of the trials, which in the end saves her by insuring her life until the chaos, hysteria, and persecution comes to an end, John is sentenced to death. The play ends with his hanging, but his death puts an end to the trials.
John Proctor’s tragic flaw is that he is impulsive. Proctor regrets what he had done with Abigail Williams and cannot forgive himself of his sins. This tragic flaw follows John Proctor throughout the entire play. Abigail Williams is vastly jealousy to Goody Proctor because of her husband John. This is shown in act two when Abigail stabs herself with a needle to prove that Goody Proctor sent her spirit upon her and to place an accusation on Goody Proctor of witchery. John has lost his relationship with his wife because of his sin, he tries to gain forgiveness of his wife but she tells him, “John, it come to naught that I should forgive you, if you’ll not forgive yourself” (Act four). Elizabeth Proctor says this because she feels that John Proctor will not feel forgiven by his wife until he can forgive himself for lechery. This tragic flaw eventually leads John Proctor to confess and find his path to
Being a hero does not necessary mean the person is perfect. Heroes are bound to make mistakes just like everyone else. In the play, The Crucible, John Proctor is portrayed as a tragic hero. A tragic hero is a character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on a tragedy. John Proctor is very selfless and full of pride and dignity, which are all traits of a hero. He also has a tragic flaw, his weakness, which is adultery. He proves that heroes are relatable to everyday people and that they are not as perfect as they may seem.
A tragic hero is an individual who possesses a fatal flaw in their character that will bring about their own destruction or suffering. Aristotle believed that “A man doesn't become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall. (Aristotle #1)” This Ancient Greek philosopher also believed that each tragic hero has four characteristics. The first of these characteristics is that a tragic hero is born with either wisdom or high integrity, and in some cases both.
John Proctor is a tragic hero. He goes through a lot to try and save his wife and prove the other “witches” innocence. But hen has a downfall that holds him back and causes him to suffer. This ultimately leads to his downfall and his death. Thus fits with the definition of a tragic hero so I believe John Proctor was a tragic hero.
John Proctor is a tragic hero. The tragic part comes from him having an affair will Abigail but he left her because he was ashamed for what he did and this led him to have problems. Abigail took revenge on him by accusing his wife of witchcraft. He’s a hero because he confessed to having an affair to save his wife from getting hang. He didn’t care for his reputation and honor that he’s been having in Salam. When John Proctor was asked to sign the confession he said that he would rather die than to lie again and that makes him noble and
A tragedy should bring fear and pity to the reader. A man in this tragedy should not be exceptionally righteous, but his faults should come about because of a certain irreversible error on his part. This man should find a bad or fatal ending to add to the tragedy of the story, for this man in the tragic hero. The protagonist John Proctor portrays a tragic hero in The Crucible; his hamartia of adultery causes great internal struggles, he displays hubris by challenging authority, and he encounters catastrophe through recognition and reversal.
By definition, a tragic hero is a protagonist that due to some tragic flaw loses everything he has. Throughout history, literature has always been filled with main characters possessing some tragic flaw. In Macbeth, Macbeth’s tragic flaw is his enormous ambition to become king. In Hamlet, Hamlet’s tragic flaw is his need for revenge for the death of his father at the hands of his uncle. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh’s tragic flaw is his need to be remembered. In the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, Beowulf also has a tragic flaw, excessive pride and the search for fame, which ultimately leads to his demise.
John Proctor faces many decisions in response to his moral dilemma to try to save his life. One of the difficult decisions John makes is to reveal that he had an affair with Abigail Williams and thereby has committed adultery. If the local court convicts him of this crime, he faces being jailed. Also by admitting this crime, John reveals a weakness in his character. This flaw in his personality will make it harder for him to stand up in the community as an honorable and believable person. In trying to convince others that witchcraft does not exist John’s dishonesty with his wife will make him less convincing to the community.
Romeo is seen as a tragic hero because of the many examples of his good and bad character. This follows Aristotle’s definition because it proves him to be a character that is neither completely good nor completely bad. Romeo loves Juliet with kindness and generosity, but to love her is forbidden. Also, he tries to prevent a second fight between the two families in the streets of Verona, but later kills Tybalt, his love’s cousin. These things make Romeo both good and bad, therefore a tragic hero.
