There is a problem with how HBCU’s in the United States are being treated when it comes to funding from the Department of Education. The history of the United States can show that it has never sufficiently supported HBCU’s with the same amount of funding as PWI’s. Insufficient funding is being provided to HBCU’s because they are not seen as a sound investment for the future advancement of American education. Unequal disbursement of funding to PWI’s only shows that HBCU’s are seen as the bottom tier of education in the nation. The United States Department of Education provides more funding to PWI’s than they do for HBCU’s because of racial bias.

Race has always been the most prominent factor in the history of this nation's educational hierarchy. Years of prejudice and utter dismay for the education of African-Americans is still apparent in today's educational system. The Department of Education deliberately underfunds HBCU’s and giving PWI’s the proper funding because of the racial advantage they hold. The fact that a college/university has a caucasian majority allows the perception that HBCU’s don't matter but only take away the money that PWI’s supposedly deserve. The attraction of new programs makes HBCU’s seem more appealing overall. The fact that these programs are being copied and taken by PWI’s shows that originality in the educational system does not matter. As long as a PWI has the money they can do whatever they please. Taking resources and students away from HBCU’s creates a retention hole that can’t be filled. The more PWI’s get overly funded, the more HBCU”s will get left in the dust of their educational
