The exchange of views whether a student should attend an HBCU or a PWI has been a topic of discussion for some time now. Whether you attend an HBCU or a PWI you go for one purpose and that purpose is to get your education. So who says because someone goes to a predominantly black school they will not get the same education a person gets that goes to a predominantly white school ? Or vice versa. Many people have some sort of idea that by attending a Predominantly White Institution(PWI) one will receive a higher level of education but that is not truly always the case. These projects frequently assume an institution whose students and faculty of color constitute a minority on campus. Stated by diversityweb.org(1) “A fundamental premise of these efforts to bring about a more inclusive curriculum is that white students and faculty have not been prepared to deal adequately with an increasingly multicultural world”. For example Spelman College, “a historically black college for women, began its curriculum transformation efforts with a Ford-funded mainstreaming women 's studies project in 1983 followed by another Ford-funded project to infuse multiculturalism in the liberal arts curriculum” according to diversityweb.org. Many schools are transforming themselves by opening the range of race, cultures and backgrounds being accepted into their college. Many people assume that PWIs are diverse but HBCUs are not.According to statistics gathered by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund(1), for example, 8 percent of public HBCU student enrollment is White, 2 percent is Latino and 1 percent is Asian. And in the past 30 years the number of Latinos has gone up a whopping 124 one hundred twenty-four percent. Therefor that goes to show that more than just blacks attend HBCUs, just because it has black in the name that does not mean only blacks contribute to the attendance of the school. The Higher Education Act of 1965 a law which was intended to build the educational resources for colleges and universities and to provide financial aid for students in any educational system after high school. I do not believe that students are accepted to college based on their skin color being white, with that being said I do believe that there is a fair process for accepting college students to schools. The historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are fledgling to compete with Predominately White Institutions (PWIs). HBCU were established to serve the educational needs of black Americans. Before HBCU college was create blacks were generally was denied admission to traditionally all white institutions. Imagine this; the year is 1836. You are a 17-year-old student interested in learning more about the world around you; however, such an opportunity won’t come your way because you are black. Due to this fact you have no hope of furthering your education past the reading, writing, and arithmetic their slave masters taught your parents. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. The minds of many African American’s go to waste due to individual ignorance of their people and thus of themselves. Clearly, HBCUs provide several benefits to African-American students. Not only have they helped to combat the cycle of discrimination that minority students experienced before the civil rights initiatives of the 1960s, but they strive to provide a warm, supportive and inclusive academic environment that addresses African-American college students as a whole person. Additionally, HBCUs are increasing their efforts to ensure that higher education is accessible, affordable and achievable for individuals with unique socioeconomic challenges. Despite obstacles, historically Black institutions will continue to play a vital and significant role in the fabric of higher education.

Through out history education has been a topic of many concerns. Historically Black Colleges and Universities were established to try and provide freed slaves education they were not able to obtain. For African Americans in the 20th century attending school was a burden. The children had to withstand long walks to get to their designated schools, being denied classes that the white students had in their schools, outdated books and hand me down classroom materials. African Americans all across the United States fought for their kids rights to get a good education, education provided to white only schools. There was a period of time schools were able to legally deny a student acceptance into their institutions based solely on the color of their skin. Many African Americans tried and majority of them got denied. Students at all levels were being denied, from Pre-K all the way up to college. After many attempts to integrate schools parents of the children being denied education just like the white kids, they realized it would be easier to just build their own schools.
Although The Brown v. Board decision allowed African American children to attend schools with their white classmates, it has failed helping with access to these schools. It has been statistically proved that white dominated schools are able to offer more and better classes, along with more after school activities. Unfortunately, though these schools do exist, they are not available in areas where the African American population are higher than the white population. For centuries African Americans have fought for equal rights, one of them being an opportunity for the chance to get an equal education. Many people believe that African Americans have an equal or better chance at getting an education than other students. This is not the case when in fact, it is actually harder for these three reasons: African American students tend to come from harsh, poverty stricken atmospheres. Shattered family lifestyles that make it difficult to pursue a higher education because they have not received the proper information. Secondly, just because African Americans are minorities does not mean that they receive a vast amount of government assistance or financial aid to pursue a higher education. Lastly, African American students do not receive the same treatment as other students when they attend predominantly white colleges and universities.
The G.I. bill, officially known as the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, was created to help veterans of the World War II. The bill established veterans’ hospitals, provided for vocational rehabilitation, and made low-interest mortgages available. Prior to the war, higher education in the United States was mostly private, liberal arts, small-college, rural, residential, elitist, and often discriminatory from institution to institution with respect to race and religion. Not only did the GI Bill make access to higher education practical for men from all backgrounds, it changed the meaning of higher education in public consciousness from the 1950s onward. For most young Americans, college has always been preached to them as being a vital part to their success in the adult world; but as they reach this educational rite of passage many find they must take out inflated loans, work part time jobs, or even become dissuaded entirely due to the exorbitant costs of higher education. We must forsake this current antiquated system in favor of government-subsidized tuition. Therefore, college education must be free because of its benefits to the economy, creation of equal opportunity, and the resolution of the student loan crisis. There are public and private universities, community colleges, women only and men only colleges, and even historically black universities. Becasue even though I might be white and male I still have to pay for all of my own college education. My parents are not going to chip in a single shiny penny. Originally going to a private university was my plan, but after seeing the hefty price tag even after my scholarship applied, I just knew that I couldnt afford it. So to save a little money the decision came down to two years at a community college and two years at a university. If only my white privalage would have kicked in, I would have been able to attend that fancy private college.
