Argumentative Essay: Should Women Be Allowed To Go Topless in Public
In the summer of 1996 Gwen Jacobs enjoyed a topless summer stroll during
which she was seen by a local O.P.P officer, was apprehended and subsequently
charged with indecent exposure. Gwen Jacobs pleaded not guilty in court and won
the right to go topless in Ontario. This incident brought up an excellent
question: should women be allowed to go topless on public beaches and in other
public areas? The answer is strictly no, women should not be allowed to go
topless anywhere outside of their own home.
One of the many reasons why I believe that women should not be allowed
to go topless is with respect to the safety of women. Men and boys have, in
recent years, been using short, tight, skirts and shirts as an excuse for rape
or date rape. Men have said that the girl was wearing a tight shirt and short
skirt and it was obvious that she was easy and wanted the attention. This
statement leads me to my next point.
The average human being upon first contact with a stranger bases his
initial impression of that person solely on the person's appearance. This is
only natural as the only thing that we know about this stranger is what we see
of them the first time we meet. We all are aware of the sayings
"Preppy","Jockish","Skater","Sluty" etc. This final saying, “Sluty” is

Us girls feel personally attacked by the dress code policies simply because even if so much as a centimeter of skin from under our jeans, or a portion of my bra strap is showing we get sent to the office and we are given the lecture of needing to keep a better image of ourselves, and being more conservative about our bodies. Well from coming from a girl's perspective, we feel like we have to bow down to the boys just because they think inappropriate thoughts if any part of a girls skin is showing. Well, we have society and adults to thank for this simply because when boys are caught doing something they aren't supposed to do or watch something they are not supposed to be watching, adults simply say, “Oh boys will be boys.”. Now adults have conditioned boys to think that thinking these thoughts is a way of life and that it is okay to think them just because they are boys. God made us girls the way we are for a reason, why are we letting guys discriminate us women in such a way that we basically have to dress like a boy in order to keep them from thinking these sinful
Have you ever fallen victim to an uninvited image? I remember the first time I was caught off guard by the discovery of some magazines under the bed of a relative. I was amazed and stunned, but I peeked and giggled. I may have even told a friend of the discovery. Since that day so long ago, I’ve been caught off guard a few more times when I’ve had a photograph pop up on the computer screen without invitation; I never giggled again. As a Mom, I’ve had moments of shocking discovery when searching a home computer. Not long ago, I was stunned as I entered a Facebook writer’s group and right before my eyes, was a picture I hadn’t asked to see; an invitation I did not desire to receive. These images can appear when least expected and one look can have a lasting impact.

Pornography can be defined as printed or visual material displaying erotic descriptions or visuals of sexual body parts or sexual activity, and is largely aimed to appeal to a male audience through sexual scenarios which often dehumanize and exploit women and their bodies. Though largely, pornography is is designed to please a masculinized audience, there are some feminists, from multiple genders, who aim to “reclaim their right to enjoy sexual images without violence and negativity” (Klinger). Ideally, pornography would be a context in which there would be a conscious movement towards eliciting a healthy reclamation of sexually charged images from all genders- especially women. Those against pornography usually emphasize the specifics of porn as it occurs in modern culture. Oftentimes anti-pornography feminists point out the extremely male-oriented vision of sexuality, the sexism, and with descriptions such as: “women presented as dehumanized sexual objects, things, or commodities; shown as enjoying humiliation, pain, or sexual assault; tied up, mutilated, or physically hurt; depicted in postures or positions of sexual submission or servility; shown with body parts- including though not limited to vagina, breast, or buttocks- exhibited such that women are reduced to those parts; women penetrated by animals or objects; and women presented in scenarios of degradation, humiliation, or torture, shown as filthy or inferior, bleeding, bruised, or hurt in a context that makes these conditions sexual” (MacKinnon). As the pornography industry is now, it contributes to the ideals of rape culture by fetishizing femininity and female “fragility” and/or “innocence”. America was built on the thought of freedom, that anyone could come here and be whomever he or she wanted and do whatever they wanted. However, this standard doesn’t seem to stand still since gay couples are not allowed to fully express this. They are refused the right to marry the one they love, they do not get to participate in one of the most sacred traditions we have. This should change and allow them to marry whomever they please. There are already 33 states that have legalized this right, and there are many others who are recognize it. However, gay marriage should be legal through out all the states because of how marriage can be defined, it doesn’t affect anyone else except who’s in the relationship, and they deserve the legal rights.
In the United States, there are many school districts that are not required to teach sex education at all. Instead, these districts teach what they call “abstinence-only education”. This education is to teach teens and young adults about not having sex, instead of how to have sex safely. So, is abstinence-only education effective enough to continue it in these districts?
In today’s society, many individuals are aware of the issue of teenage pregnancy and the high rate of sexually transmitted diseases among the youth. One can simply turn on their television and become quickly aware of the popular, yet controversial, discussion of teenage sexual activity in the United States through the news and shows like Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. Almost ever, discussion about teenagers and their sexual activity refers back to Sex Education in the public school system. Many individuals would consider Sex Education to be the source and/or solution to the problems that occur as a result of sexually active teenagers in the United States. For many decades, Sex Education has been taught in public schools but also has been a topic of controversy. Proponents of Abstinence-Only Education argue that Traditional Sex Education should not just focus on teaching students about contraceptives and how to use them, but instead it should also help students develop and acquire the virtues of prudence and temperance, and teach students the importance of abstinence and the emotional risk that comes along with being sexually active at such a young age. Other people like to argue that Traditional Sex Education should be taught in schools because they believe that informing students about how to be safe when participating in sexual acts is very important. Abstinence-Only Education is the best form of Sex Education for students and should be taught in the public school system because it teaches students the importance of abstaining from sex along with helping them develop or acquire the virtues of prudence and temperance.
In the story the plot was twisted around. Mrs. Mallard has heart problems and when she learns that her husband has been killed and she was really sad, but when her sister left, she thought to herself and felt happy. She then said “free, free, free!” However, her husband opens the door and when she sees him her heart pumped too fast because it pushed over the top with joy, but in my mind, I believe she died because it was so much grief knowing he was still alive. Therefore, in many stories the plot can become twisted and the outcome can change drastically.

Transgender individuals shouldn’t be subjected to abuse, slander and danger when using a public restroom in any of the Unites States. Yet the U.S. recently made the bold move to make it culturally acceptable to discriminate against transgender individuals and the LGBT community when passing the HB2 Bill in North Carolina by the General Assembly. With the world adjusting to the multiple terms now associated with the gender identity that spans in variations of asexual to queer, the U.S. has regressed by taking action to remove the Civil Rights of its citizens that identify within these terms. This bill does much more than just reverse civil rights and weaken discrimination regulation. The argument that a non-transgender person feels uncomfortable with a transgender person using the same bathroom is the same argument that once made people of color using public bathrooms and water fountains to be segregated. As today’s society progresses in the demand for the equality of all United States citizens, transgender people continue to face some of the highest forms of discrimination. Transgender individuals are defined as one who does not identify with or express themselves as the gender in which they were born. Several of these people choose to represent themselves only by dressing as the gender in which they identify with. However, a great portion of them choose to have gender reassignment surgery and legally change their birth certificates, social security information and other identifying documents to complete their transformation in order to feel like the gender they should have been at birth. Not surprisingly, the majority members of today’s society do not understand or relate to this and therefore discriminate against transgender individuals. Just how many people identify as transgender in our city, or nation for that matter, is impossible to know due to the fact that the United States Census Bureau has not yet come up with a solution to include theses individuals to accrue an accurate account for their population totals. Yet, the Williams Institute discovered through research evidence from their 2007 and 2009 surveys which suggests that 0.5% of adults aged 18-64 identified as transgender (Gates, 2011). The Houston metro area is no exception. While we do not have a precise number of transgender citizens living here, evidence supported by a lot of local websites as well as community based businesses and support services that cater to this culture proves that there are scores of of these people living here. Many schools are now including sexual education in their required curriculum. Sex education can be taught to all grades, senior though preschool although this is more focused on middle to high school ages. Planned parenthood helps push sex education into school and suggests that school teach this to the middle school and high school students. This would help the student in the long run with the many unanswered question that could be to embarrassing to ask the parents. The youth are being more sexualized earlier in life; this could help with all the questions left unanswered that teens have. The right to privacy is not specifically listed in the Constitution, however over the years several US Supreme Court rulings have inferred that it is there. Historically, justices have cited the 9th Amendment to the Constitution which says that “…..because a right is not in the Constitution, does not mean that that right does not exist…” They have also inferred a right to privacy from various portions of the Bill of Rights such as the 4th Amendment, which protects individuals in their persons, homes, papers, and effects from "unreasonable searches and seizures." Additionally, the 1st Amendment protects freedom of religion, speech, press, and assembly, which also unconditionally safeguards the right to privacy in the form of freedom of thought and intellect.
