“You can’t do it because you’re a girl.” Has anyone ever said that to you? Personally, men have said this to me numerous times. As women, we go through the struggles every day. The average men makes $55.5k while a women makes from 30.3k to $46.3k, depending on race. Doesn’t that get you mad? Why do we have to be paid differently than men when we can do everything they can do? Lots of men say that women don’t work hard enough compared to men. I would like to contradict. Women are strong and just as equivalent to men, so we shouldn’t have such immense differences in things like our income. We are a lot more than just something nice to look at. I think that boys being sexist to women is mainly triggered by social media. When uneducated boys make a post about how “women shouldn't get paid as much as men because men work harder” other boys see it and feed from it causing it to become a nasty trend. There have been a few times when I get a sexist comment from my brothers and I know for a fact they did not learn it from my parents. One time I said to my brother “Isn’t it just so weird how big the pay difference is between men and women?” and he responded with “well duh. Women are weak and can’t do as much as men”. I was astonished by what he said. When i tried to tell him that a girl could do anything a boy could do, he stuck with his word and wouldn’t budge to change the words that came out of his mouth. If my mom ever witnessed what they said to me she would be furious. Boys also seem to think that we are play objects for them and they can take advantage of us. Just from talking to countless guys I can tell they think we are just there to be a classic old school wife who cleans the house and takes care of the kids. We are much more than that. Although we like to comfort ourselves with the idea that we have gotten our rightfully earned rights, we had not been given bathroom breaks until 1998. Furthermore, employees are still afraid to have a voice in the workforce. Employers establish rules that let laborers know that they are inferior.
Parents raise boys to become men and to reject women. This leads men to disrespect women because they do not see them as human. According to Geoffrey Canada, “The music industry presents overtly sexual messages that denigrate women and portray them as sex toys. Video games offer violent messages, and even the sports video games include taunting and teasing. Movies portray men as tough guys.
Men have been stereotyped as dominant, strong, brave and aggressive. Also there is an image of men being portrayed as harder workers than women and supposedly the more intelligent gender.

Flash forward 100 years. There have been women in space, we have a woman running for president, 14.6% of our military is female. Men have also taken on more roles within the household such as cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, and even child care. People would have been baffled if you had told him there was a such thing as being a stay at home dad, or even a single dad.
Satya Nadella once said, “We must ensure not only that everyone receives equal pay for equal work, but that they have the opportunity to do equal work.” It was found that women only earn seventy-nine percent of what men make in similar jobs. The gender pay gap has been in account for over fifty years, and yet it is still an issue today. Although businesses are required to practice fairness in compensation amongst all employees regardless of gender, age, or race this is not always the case. Businesses need to instill stricter policies against unequal pay to eliminate racial discrimination, reward and recognize performance and experience, and do away with the gender gap.
Why is it that most men think that women aren’t good enough to be their equals in the working world? The stereotypical male thinks that women should be at home doing what women do best, any stereotypical activity you can think of a woman doing. Such as, watching soap operas, cleaning the house, or even crying because she started her menstrual cycle. Gender roles are “a set of expectations that prescribe how females or males should think, act, or feel” (Santrock, 369). Men have the expectations to be less emotional and more masculine. It’s easy for men to not place much value on women because of the way our society is set up.
