If you go back in time, women were known to be housewives who took care of the children and household duties while their husbands went off to work. But, in modern times more women are going to college and going into careers men usually do. Now that women have more rights and are breaking the stereotype of being a housewife, they are now not getting paid the same amount as their fellow male colleagues. The more women get promoted the more the pay gap widens. Women don't ask for more money because they are afraid they will come off as annoying or they feel bad asking. Jennifer Lawrence was put in that situation when she found out her male co-stars were making more money than her and her other female costar Amy Adams. That shows that the pay gap …show more content…
One form of discrimination that takes place in the workplace. Women, who are as equally trained and educated, and have the same experience as men are not getting equal pay, because historically women have always stayed at home doing housework. The solution is women should be paid the same amount as men for doing the same …show more content…
Robert J. Samuelson says, “ What's worth recalling is that the flood of women into the labor force represents one of the great social and economic upheavals of the post-World war 2 era. In the early postwar years, gender roles were stark. Once women married, they mostly stayed home and took care of the kids. In 1947, women’s labor-force participation rate was 32 percent. Female college graduates were a tiny minority, and few women were doctors, lawyers, accountants, newspaper reporters, police officers or business managers.” He went on by saying “ By 2013, women's labor-force participation rate had nearly doubled by 57 percent. Women also earned 57 percent of the bachelor's degrees in 2011 and half the PhDs and first professional degrees.” The origin of the dramatic change could be from things like household appliances, which saved time; the opening of college for women, which opened more job opportunities and the rise of feminism, which helped women get rid of the housewife stereotype. The more women advance in their careers the more the pay gap widens. Even though women have advanced in certain careers such as higher paying jobs dominated by men, most women work in lower paying occupations such as health care, social work and education. Eileen Patten says, “ Women are about twice as likely as men to say they had been discriminated against at work because
Creating the idea that if this gap continues to remain constant, or even worse grow, woman will never be able to reach equal pay. A podcast, How the Gender Pay Gap Works, presents us with a critical study done in 2011 in which shows a twenty five year old white woman compared to a twenty five year old white male. In this study both twenty five year olds contained the same qualifications and job title, yet the woman made a significant five thousand dollars less a year. Essentially this means that by the time she makes it to sixty five she will have lost out on four hundred thirty thousand dollars. This outstanding number shines light on the existing problem with women being mistreated and paid in the workforce. Additionally, a woman would have to work a year more to make the same amount of money that a man made the previous year (How the Gender Pay Gap
There is a pay gap between men and women in the U.S. The pay gap affects women of all educations levels, and backgrounds. But white men are the largest demographic in labor forces so they possibly favor each other as opposed to women. The graph didn’t specify the type of jobs, or whether they were working parts time or fulltime. But in 2016, women working full time in the U.S. were paid 80% of what men were getting paid. There are some occupations that have not reached the equity but some have like retail, banking and real
If I were to ask you why there is a pay gap, the most common answer I would get is this, “More women take time off to care for their families than men, and this explains their shortcomings in pay”. So then why, when comparing both men and women who have not taken time off, is there still a difference in pay? Like I said before, gender differences and industry choice can explain up to 50% of the gap. The “Study Counters Usual Explanations for Pay Gaps” article states that, “There is a greater concentration of women working within a particular industry that tends to pay less”. For example, women make up only 9% of workers in the high-paying legal and management occupations according to the article “The Complex Causes of the Gender Wage Gap” written by Barbara Wagner. (TALK ABOUT MOM) Nationally, women make less than men because there aren’t as many of us in as high paying of jobs as them. What I found was that the discrimination doesn’t lie in the amount of money women and men are being payed, the bias against women is in the occupation and the job market before she even applies for the position. Barbara Wagner wrote in the article “The Complex Causes of the Gender Wage Gap” that women are less likely to be accepted into education and training programs in non-traditional fields like agriculture, architecture, and engineering. She also wrote that
When women are actually given the same jobs as men, they may be paid the same but typically, they are not able to reach the higher positions in the company that men do. Even with their 77 cents to a man’s dollar, “women still tend to bear a larger responsibility for child care and other household matters within families” (Mazorelle). Women are not given the opportunity to earn as much as men, and they still have to take on a majority of the responsibilities of the household.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Satya Nadella once said, “We must ensure not only that everyone receives equal pay for equal work, but that they have the opportunity to do equal work.” It was found that women only earn seventy-nine percent of what men make in similar jobs. The gender pay gap has been in account for over fifty years, and yet it is still an issue today. Although businesses are required to practice fairness in compensation amongst all employees regardless of gender, age, or race this is not always the case. Businesses need to instill stricter policies against unequal pay to eliminate racial discrimination, reward and recognize performance and experience, and do away with the gender gap.
The 23 cent gap has fallen apart in how it was traditionally seen and the 5-7 cent gap is far more likely the cause of women being less likely to negotiate for higher pay. More research is still key to understanding what’s happening, however, and it needs to be explored why women respond to certain incentives, such as job satisfaction, more than men, or why women feel less incentive to negotiate for higher pay, or why each gender seems to choose a certain profession more than the other. It used to be that men and women were segregated into hunters and homesteaders but things have come a long way since the dark ages. Social stigmas and values evolve over time and will eventually become a thing of the past but for now, no physical force is holding someone back from following their dreams and it’s only fair if you want to be a stay at home dad or a petroleum engineer. Equality among genders is something that everybody can agree
Throughout the history of the world, discrimination in all forms has been a constant struggle, whether it is race, gender, religion, appearance or anything else that makes one person different from another, it is happening every day. One significant discrimination problem that is affecting many women takes place in the work place. As of recently the gender wage gap has become a major topic for discussion. The gender wage gap is the average difference between men and women aggregated hourly earnings. Women who are equally trained and educated, and with the same experience are getting paid way less than men. In 2015, female full time workers earned eighty cents for every dollar earned by men.
Gender discrimination is defined as prejudice against an individual due to his or her gender or sex. Discrimination against women has been occurring for years and continues to pose an issue today, especially in institutions such as the workforce. In the past, women were limited to very few rights; they were not permitted to vote and were considered as “property”. The only real jobs they had were housewives.and only a handful of women were in the labor force. In today’s society, women compose more than half of the workforce, yet they earn a significantly less amount compared to their male counterparts for completing the same tasks. Due to the subtleness of the issue, many still continue to be unaware of the discrimination which occurs. Though the issues regarding gender discrimination have gone through improvements recently, the issue at hand
While actresses have been especially vocal about this issue in recent months, gender wage gap is not a unique problem that only pertains to Hollywood. According to the White House, women who are working full-time make approximately 77% percent of what their male counterparts earn in wages. Pew Research Center’s estimate shows similar results, where women working full- and part-time earn about 84% of what their male counterparts make on average.
The gender pay gap has existed ever since women entered the workforce. Right now in the United States, the average female worker earns 78 percent of what the average male worker earns (“Gender Pay Gap: Recent Trends”). Also, according to the
For many years in United States, equal salary pay for women has been a major issue that women have been fighting for decades. This began back in World War II, when the National Labor Board urged equalize the salary rates for women with the same rates that males were getting of the same professions. (Rowen) Although, traditionally most women do not work to provide for there family and there are not so many independent women during World War II. After World War II more women lost their jobs to veterans returning to the workforce. Women in the workforce after the war have been discriminated ever since. The idea of women as weak and cannot perform there jobs
Due to various countries initiatives to shrink the wage inequality between men and women wages in the work force, the gap has narrowed, respectively, which may have helped form such opinion. However, stating that the gender pay gap does not exist in today’s society, anywhere, is completely unlikely. Seeing that the gap has loosened its grasp in the working world, in other countries, the gap between pay has widened or remained stagnant. One cannot help but wonder why the gap remains consistent, even with such substantial progress made in countries where the gap has decreased. Reasons as to why gender wage gap exist so heavily, slightly differs from country to country, but the overall effect from the wage disparity is wholly evident.
Have you ever felt discriminated against in the workplace? Usually, women are the most common people that are mistreated in the workplace. There are many reasons why women are discriminated against, but none of them are excuses for women for not being successful. Women face sexism by getting less pay than men, not getting promoted as equally as men, and facing other gender stereotypes, but sexism can be solved by women confronting their internal and external barriers and finding people that can help women.
From the beginning of history and to this day women still get paid less than the average man, but why? Whoever said that women are incapable of good work performance? Whoever said that women do not have the same responsibilities to maintain? What really makes a women’s work inferior to men? The answer is nothing. Today, women are depended on just as much as men, and are capable of performing at their level. However, a full-time working woman earns only seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man makes. These days women make up half the workplace in our society; they work just as hard and for the same reasons. Women deserve to be paid at an equal rate as men because they are relied on to uphold the same responsibilities and are just as qualified to perform at a man’s level.
Rebecca Anagnostis Mr. Longo US I H 10 June 2024 The Harsh Inequality: Equal Pay For Women Women have been paid less than men throughout history. They have been making less money ever since they were permitted to work. This pay gap was especially prevalent during the 1800s and the 1900s. The pay gap was the difference between how much women and men got paid, with women consistently being paid less and undervalued.
