Make your own path in life, it is a dangerous one, but sometimes it is the risk that you have to take in order not to be stuck in the same rut for your entire life. Standing in rain like a bunch of cows perfectly describes how a crowd of people are going to conform and feed off of each other. We accept our miseries and the disasters that come upon us. It shows how intelligent the people are who paths down the road of disaster are following each other’s. They sit around and watch each other fail while trying to get ahead in life. There is no point in following behind the troop of people all you are going to do is follow in the mistakes that they make and watch the disasters occur. Wilson is trying to tell us in this quote "The average man is a conformist, accepting miseries and disasters with the stoicism of a cow standing in the rain" that we need to stop following the crowd, there is other options besides accepting your …show more content…
Watching the miseries of your life before your eyes and choosing not to fix it because it is not what the crowd is doing is really pathetic. Being your own person is important because it helps you figure out who you really are and what you want out of life. Colin is trying to tell us that following the crowd ends up in disaster and if you want that out of your life go right on ahead, but if you want to be unique and have your own miseries then be yourself. Who are you going to choose to be the person in the middle of crowd or are you the one who is off somewhere else enjoying what life has to offer? It is something that you have to choose what you want out of your life if you want to follow the crowd or live your own
Quentin Crisp is also giving a solution to the rising problem. According to him, the first step towards a better life is creating “system begins with each of us trying to decide what it is that makes him the way he is” (Mr. Quentin Crisp). After understanding yourself from the inside (interior), only then you are allowed to look for the external definition of the personal identity. Second step is to acknowledge what other people say about you. That is where the person is capable of developing his negatively reflections of himself. The two sides of understanding yourself (own interior and other people’s opinion) are connected into one bigger picture which is the answer the question of existence. However, in order for people to survive together in the community, they need to adapt and show the others what they want to see. Your true you might not be what present people accept; therefore, adaptation to it is
When times get tough, many people turn away from everyone and everything. It must be part of human nature to adopt an independent attitude when faced with troubles. It is understandable because most people do not want to trouble their loved ones when they are going through problems, so it is easier to turn away than stick together. Maybe their family is going through a rough patch and they reason they would be better off on their own. This path of independence and solitude may not always be the best option for them or their family, though. Often times it is more beneficial for everyone to work through the problem together. It is not always the easiest or most desirable option, but most times it is the most efficient and it will get results in the long run. In The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck makes this point very clear through several characters. Many characters throughout
All throughout his whole life, there was always this nag in himself as in who he was and where he came from. Finding your identity is very important, as well as having your perspective of life change. Life is a never ending cycle of change, whether it be in society or yourself. Being lost is very horrifying, and it is very important to find yourself. Happiness is the key to the world today. Everyone is trying to find themselves in order to be happy. You should always overcome obstacles until you find your happiness, most importantly your identity, and you should always accept change whether it be in something small, like your routine or something big, as in how your view of life
Nevertheless, I lived in a small town; therefore, if I wanted to get admission to a good academic school, I had to leave my family, my own bedroom, and my all belongings. It is not possible to have all the things together in anyone's life. However, it is our duty to make the right decision at the right time. In George Orwell's essay, I totally disagree with the police officer's thoughts. He knew that he was wrong, but he killed the elephant to fulfill others' In my opinion, to be social is a good thing for every human.
In today’s world, we live in a society where we are subjected to follow rules, which are placed upon us by the society. Many people are faced with the dilemma of whether or not to follow the ideals of other people, or pursue their ideals and go against the prevailing conventions. In “Selections from Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, the author talks about a man named McCandless who went into the Alaskan wilderness in order to find his true self. His journey was also to escape from the societal norms of society. A person who goes into the wilderness believes that they can live their life with brute simplicity. This gives them little to no time with the complicated problems of modern society. Likewise, in “Waiting for a Jew” by Jonathan Boyarin, the author talks about one’s aspiration to find their identity and purpose in the community. He conveys that religious places, like shul, allow an individual to develop a cross- cultural self. The desires and expectations placed upon us by the society shape our strategies of personal identity; therefore, instilling fears that cause us to identify in opposition to our prevailing conventions.
Life can be changed by a decision made during a single moment. Despite the natural gifts of courage or intelligence of a person, a single mistake can isolate him from the rest of society. In one case this can be cause by public conception. The public believes that this person is morally inferior and singles out that person for ridicule. However, it can also be self-imposed isolation. Either way, that person cannot rejoin his society until he has redeemed himself.
In the May 6th, 1950 issue of Collier’s magazine, a short story first appeared titled “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains” written by Ray Bradbury. Bradbury would later include this story into his book The Martian Chronicle’s, a collection of short science fiction pieces. The story takes place in a dystopian future in the City of Allendale, California. There, a house owned by the McClellan family is the only thing that remains standing after a horrific occurrence (a presumed nuclear explosion) destroys the rest of the city. The house is a sophisticated “smart” house, where everything is automated. Everyday tasks are completed without human intervention; this is convenient since there are no humans to be found. The house takes care of the family that once lived there, even though they are gone. In the end, the house meets its demise and burns down when a tree crashes through the window starting a fire that spreads from the kitchen.
...ix, it was important to view and analyze key scenes where the concept of self-identity and Neo’s relationship and expression with world came under scrutiny. The world of the matrix, what Neo believed to be the 'real' world is presented in sharp contrasts between light and dark. In our world today humans are faced with the same identity and reality struggles. These struggles may not be as exaggerated and far-fetched as Neo's, but in essence they are just as difficult. When I look at my peers or even within myself, I see the struggle that comes when making choices; will the choices lead to the right path or to the wrong? By making these choices, will it ultimately change an individual’s identity? I believe that the choices we make define who we are and what will become of us. Some of us keep one life a secret, and one life visible for others to see, just as Neo did.
Dr. Seuss once wrote that “today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you”, but what makes a person unique? A person’s character is what makes them who they are. It is the foundation of personality, words, and actions, and it grows with every trial in an individual’s life. Personal struggle develops character because it brings to light what a person will and will not do, allows them to find or develop talents, it creates an opportunity to alter their mindset, and the experience gained will stay with the individual forever.
With my experience, I came to value my family and friends as an important part of my identity. But in the end, an identity is different from one person to another, and it shows in many different ways. So, do not be afraid to take control of our lives, make a decision and try something new in life because we never know if it is good or bad until we try. It help us see life from a different perspective, which could make us a better person.
Few situations exist that can strip a person of their ability to influence their world as much as social desolation. In the words of Rudyard Kipling, “The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too h...
For about five years California has experienced above average temperatures and a lack of rain. This lack of rain and snowfall has caused California to become increasingly dry, starting arguments over whose right to water is more important and who needs to be more mindful with their use of water. Farming in California truly began during the gold rush when water was redirected to land where food was grown for those looking for gold (Siegler, 2015). The farmers that have stayed on that land now have senior water rights (“Water wars”, 2015). Farmers that settled their land before 1914 are those with senior water rights (Terrell, 2015). Governor Jerry Brown has called for a cut in water use by one-quarter percent to people living
Going along with someone’s beliefs is costly. When someone is open-minded, it is considered a positive investment in one’s growth. Removing one’s self from one’s ideas and way of life is another type of investment, one yielding high risk and little rewards. The incentive of being a part of something is very much worth the risk to many people. In the stories, “Just Walk on By” and “Happy Endings,” the tone is shared between Brent Staples and Mary B. who both conform to someone else’s mind-set for a sense of belonging.
...e craft ourselves from what the society can afford to give up. We cannot simply believe that we live the same life as we did when we were younger or that we lived our lives as nature attended it to be. The developments the society influences craft our lives every day. Therefore, our identity is influenced by nurture; nurture is the ultimate cause of identity.
Sulfates and nitrates that form in the atmosphere from sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions contribute to visibility impairment, meaning we cannot see as far or as clearly through the air. Sulfate particles account for 50 to 70 percent of the visibility reduction in the eastern part of the U.S. Acid rain looks, feels, and tastes just like clean rain. The harm to people from acid rain is not direct. Walking in acid rain, or even swimming in an acid lake, is no more dangerous than walking or swimming in clean water. However, the pollutants that cause acid rain do damage human health. These gases interact in the atmosphere to form fine sulfate and nitrate particles that can be transported long distances by winds and inhaled deep into people
