Sea monsters are widely known to be creatures that reside in the salty seas and are often imagined to be of enormous size. Many people do believe these creatures exist deep underneath the ocean surface; however, credible scientific evidence and valid photographs have not been recorded. Therefore, sea monsters are creatures of our imagination. Over the course of many years, researchers and scientists have worked to prove the existence of mythical creatures such as the Loch Ness Monster and Godzilla; however, despite their numerous attempts, credible scientific evidence has not been recorded. In the year of 1868, a photograph was published in Harper’s Weekly of an animal identified as the basking shark. Before the identity of the animal was known, scientists examined decomposed parts of the fish, which “lead to the assumption that it was a sea monster with legs” (Source A). Although the image was created using parts of the fish, it is not a credible photograph, and certainly not enough evidence to declare the creature as a sea monster. But still, the image was published as a sea monster and later published as a basking shark. This proves that the image of the basking shark was not valid and that the images of other sea monsters are not valid either. Furthermore, in 1848, a serpent sea monster by the name of Chessie, who supposedly lives in the Chesapeake Bay, was sighted. Photographs of the sea monster have been recorded, however, “none of these has been clear enough to be accepted as proof of the monster” (Source C). With no clear photographs, the existence of sea monsters cannot be proved. Correspondingly, if the images were sufficient, they alone are not enough evidence to prove the existence of sea monsters because with modern technology, the images of Chessie could have very easily been photoshopped to depict a sea monster.
