Body mass that exceeds over 30 indicates the patient is obese. Obesity is having an excessive amount of body fat. For example, a person who is 5’2 and is about 200 pounds (muscle mass not included) is obese. A disorder which affects a person 's everyday life is known as a disease. A disease also causes other complications for that person. It is true that obesity can, in fact, cause other complications,but obesity can be self-treated. Therefore, obesity should not be considered a disease. Obesity can be the result of many things. Medical problems can cause obesity. Genetics can lead to obesity. Medication can lead to obesity. Pregnancy, aging, and inactivity can cause obesity. Some of these things are uncontrollable and that is understandable. But nothing says it is not worth trying. It is possible to lose the weight. Figuring it out is the key.

Weight gain is most likely the case. There are some females who might not gain any weight during their pregnancy, or gain a few pounds, but most do. It can be lost after the pregnancy though. It may be a little difficult to lose the fat from the baby, but it is not impossible. Working out and eating right is the solution as well. For example, while the baby is sleeping, walk around the house multiple times or do some sit ups.
Medical problems can cause weight gain as well. If a person has diabetes, they are most likely at risk for being overweight. Depression can cause someone to gain weight as well. Their drive to do anything decreases their interest in completing everyday activities. Some do not even want to get up and carry on throughout their day. Underactive thyroids can cause obesity too. Thyroids help control the metabolism in a person’s body. If the thyroids are under active, they will slow the metabolism down, which in most cases, will slow the loss of calories

Obesity is a serious problem that increases year after year and affects the lives of many Americans. It is a problem that needs to be eradicated, but who is responsible for this problem? Some argue that individuals are responsible for their own weight; that it is a private concern. Some others, on the other hand, argue that it is a public concern; therefore, the government should play a significant role to stop reduce obesity from the public domain. They also argue that advertisements for junk food are factors that increase obesity. As persuasive as the advertisements can be and even with the help of the government, it is our decision to not eat healthy and end up in a state of obesity.
Obesity happens when a person become severely overweight. Doctors can find out if a person is overweight by using the body mass index chart or calculator and by measuring fat percentage. The BMI chart shows what a person’s height and ideal weight. If such person happens to have a BMI reading over 30, then that person is considered to be obese. Obesity comes with many health factors, some of which includes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, respiratory problems, and arthritis.
Before pointing fingers at any one reason, one must consider the causes of obesity. The sources are varied. These causes include: environmental factors, social factors and medication. Environmental factors including of overeating, lack of physical activity, eating out too often and school lunches (Schoenstadt). “The top two causes of obesity in children are the unhealthy diets and physical inactivity. A sedentary life along with a fat rich diet will also result in obesity” (Schoenstadt). Social factors may consist of not having enough money or even low levels of education. Medication is also a contributor because these drugs may cause weight gain (Schoenstadt).
There are many causes for obesity each obese person can have a different one, but in general obesity is caused by an individual consuming more calories than the body can expend or actually needs. Obesity is defined as an abnormal increased of fat in the subcutaneous connective tissue. This means that there are many fat cells under the skin. Eating a lot of food than the body can use for energy makes this deposition.(5) The main explanation for this are eating too much or having a diet high in fat and calories and having lack of exercise or activity. Carrie Fredericks in her book “Obesity” he mention some facts about the causes of obesity and he said that people who get 20 to 30 minutes of exercise most days are less likely to be obese(31). So exercise is one of the factors that prevent obesity. Most dietary research suggests that people should limit the amount of fatty foods they consume to less than 30 percent of their daily energy consumption.
Obesity is a modern epidemic in America and is starting to become our society’s “norm.” According to an article in Progress in Health Sciences, childhood obesity is the most frequent eating disorder (Koukourikos). There are several factors that contribute to the childhood obesity epidemic. Should we solely shun the parents of obese children for this? No, we should not. There is not one single person to blame, but several people, along with our society. Family, friends, and schools all play a very important role in teaching children about healthy food choices and exercise. Children may have a greater risk for obesity due to genetic factors. We need to constantly remind our children how important it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle so that

Fast food chains on every block, more and more technology to make our lives easier, and high amount of stress are just a few factors to weight gain in our country. There are many different views on obesity and how the people think it should be resolved, whether it's government making the change or the people taking care of themselves. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Are we doing enough to bring these statistics down? No. In the last 40 years, there has been a growth to more than 160,000 fast food restaurants in America (“Adolescent and School Health”). Restaurants (such as Wendy's, McDonald's etc.) serve more than 50 million people per day, generating about 65 million in sales annually. Only since obesity has become a national epidemic have fast food restaurants changed their ways. But we need to do more than just change the kind of oil the french fries are fried in. Better yet, why don't we remove, or intensely decrease the number of the unhealthy fast food chains, and spread more healthy fast food chains, such as Subway? Is it something government could take act in? Should the United States government take measures to fight the rise of obesity in the country, or are choices concerning diet and nutrition better left to the individuals, free of government interference?

There are many myths regarding obesity, for instance, those who are obese eat more than the non obese. A study in 1979 proved that 19 out of 20 obese individuals eat the same amount as the non obese. People believe that obese individuals are emotionally disturbed, but although they deal with immense social pressures, they do not posses more or less emotions then others. Body fat is said to be unhealthy but in actuality some body fat is beneficial. Another myth is that the obese are at greater risk of cardiovascular disease. This is true with yoyo diets which cause weight to fluctuate throughout adult life. It is thought that obese people are lazy and unfit, but many do exercise and live longer than those who are thin, unfit, and do not exercise. Everyone gets “fat” with old age. Weight increases with age because people become less active, metabolism slows, and you loose muscle mass. Obesity is not untreatable; radical treatments include shutting the jaw, stapling the stomach, and intestinal bypass operations.
Two contributing factors to adult obesity are imbalanced nutrition more than body requirements and decreased or the lack of daily physical activity (Treas & Wilkinson, 2014). With individuals taking in more food than the body requires and decreasing daily physical activity the body will store the unused food as fat. Unbalanced diets and large portion sizes can contribute to this. A lot of individuals who live different lifestyles are guilty of eating foods that are convenient instead of what is healthy. I am also guilty of these food choices at times. Being obese can contribute to chronic diseases that can decrease an individual's health causing other underlying illnesses.
