Body image is a person’s perception of themselves and their body. A poor body image can easily affect us in an absolutely pessimistic way. Society has devised and set its own standards on what is beautiful and what is not. This has tremendously affected plenty of people and it just keeps on getting worse over the course of years. Negative body image affects over 7 million teens and adults every year, but what causes such catastrophic numbers, what is the source of this tragedy? A poor body image can be caused by peer influence, and media influence and they can both play a massive part on the results on a poor body image. Peers, a peer is a person who is mostly equal to you in abilities, qualifications, age, background, and social status. They are always around and they play a big part in influencing people. Society today has changed so very much from how it was back then, but now “people are setting standards...defining what is beautiful in our...world...for boys and girls” (Kowalski). This is a very wide spectrum of catastrophe and it is in no way good for people. One girl was greatly affected, she had “anorexia nervosa….which….means” that she was always at a lack or loss of appetite for food and she got this because she was overpowered by many factors to lose weight and look a certain way for other people (Kowalski). A poor body image caused this to happen and it can cause a lot more serious things to a person (Thankfully now she had gone to therapy to help her overcome her issue and is feeling much better about herself). Media advertises how “stress-eating” helps people who are down when in reality it can most likely cause a, “binge eating disorder and depression...which is two...very serious conditions” (Jordan). This shows how two serious conditions were both caused by a poor image in people. This is no laughing matter but unfortunately, people greatly overlook this and laugh things-like this
