Does Gender Inequality Exist?
Discrimination involves equal pay, racism, religion, and in this case, gender. It’s the way people perceive the equality between men and women. You may ask yourself, “why is it socially acceptable for a women to wear men’s clothing, but not socially acceptable for men to wear women 's clothing?” and “why is it socially acceptable for a women to hit a man, but not socially acceptable for a man to hit a women?” These are the type of situations society have been dealing with for a lifetime. Double standards are frequently discussed and cause serious arguments nowadays; however, depending on where one is from and raised, everyone has a different view on the constant controversy. Culture has a large impact on how society treats men and women along with the school system and work place.
As I read, “Taking Women Students Seriously” by Adrienne Rich, I realized that not everyone can relate to her perspective or experiences on gender inequality. I interviewed my grandmother because she went through discrimination in the mid 90’s similar to Rich, but she was in China while Rich was in America. It opens many doors for those who are trying to make a living and without education, finding a job that financially pays well is difficult. Zhang says, “Because I didn’t go to school, I couldn’t read and working in certain settings would be tough.” Even if she could work, she would have been an inconvenient worker because of her lack of skills. She ended up working on a farm in her village harvesting crops while her husband got a job at a factory after high school that actually provided money, unlike hers. This is where equal pay comes up and as Rich says, “historically women have always had to be better than men to do half as well”
Historically, females have been discriminated against in the United States based solely on their gender. Gender or sex discrimination may be described as the unfair treatment of a person in their employment because of that person's sex. It is illegal to discriminate based on sex and it may result in negative effects on employment include pay, position and title, advancements and training opportunities or whether or not an individual is hired or fired from a job.

Sexual discrimination is prevalent in the United States today, and is evident in the business world. Most businesses have always been dominated by men, and have simply been tradition in America that men run Corporate America and not women. Not until the late twentieth century, have women even been a part of big business.
For instance, another one of my interviewees was a 36-year-old black female who currently works as a social worker and stated that they were no significant differences in opportunities between genders. However, she stated that she would be working in healthcare soon and has heard of issues pertaining to the rate I which men are paid as opposed to the women employees. The 21-year-old Hispanic male interviewee told me that he works at a non-profit organizations and the Executive Director makes the place safe and equal for all if the workers. The International Labor Organizations demonstrates that most women work in health and social services, where as only 42 percent work in scientific and technological fields. In places where women are more common, there might be any differences in opportunities, whereas a place where more men are common there might be. It goes back to the “male and female dominate”
Gender inequality specifies to unequal treatment or approach of individuals based on their gender. It occurs from differences in socially constructed gender roles as well as biologically through chromosomes, brain structure, and hormonal differences. In 2006, the World Economic Forum introduced The Global Gender Gap Index. It is a framework that captures the magnitude and capacity of gender-based disparities and tracking their progress. The index measures national gender gaps on political, economic, education and health based criteria, and provides country rankings that allow for effective comparisons across regions and income groups, over time. The rankings are mainly designed to create a greater awareness among a global audience of the challenges posed by gender gaps and the opportunities created by reducing them.
‘Boys will be boys’, a phrase coined to exonerate the entire male sex of loathsome acts past, present, and potential. But what about the female sex, if females act out of turn they are deemed ‘unladylike’ or something of the sort and scolded. This double standard for men and women dates back as far as the first civilizations and exists only because it is allowed to, because it is taught. Gender roles and cues are instilled in children far prior to any knowledge of the anatomy of the sexes. This knowledge is learned socially, culturally, it is not innate. And these characteristics can vary when the environment one is raised in differs from the norm. Child rearing and cultural factors play a large role in how individuals act and see themselves.
Are you aware that in 2015, women who were working full time in the United States were only paid 80 percent of what men were paid, at a 20 percent gap? This number is only up a measly one percentage from 2014, and the change isn’t of any major significance. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the earnings ratio hasn’t had significant annual change since 2007. This gender wage gap has only narrowed since the 1970s and due largely to women’s progress in education and workforce participation and to men’s wages rising at a slower rate. Still, the pay gap does not appear likely to go away on its own. At the rate of change between 1960 and 2015, women are expected to reach pay equity with men in 2059. Women more often than men meet on their way to a career glass ceilings, limited access to management , lower wages for the same work, and the enormous requirements for the appearance. Moreover, due to their maternal privileges, they have hard time in getting a job.
Everybody is born and made differently, but one thing is similar, our gender. We are born either male or female, and in society everybody judges us for our gender. This is called gender roles; societies expecting you to act like a male or female (Rathus, 2010). Some people say, “act like a lady,” or “be a man,” these are examples of how gender roles work in our everyday lives. In society when we think stereotypes, what do we think? Many think of jocks, nerds, or popular kids; gender stereotyping is very similar. Gender stereotypes are thoughts of what the gender is supposed to behave like (Rathus, 2010). One example of a gender stereotype for a man would be a worker for the family, and a women stereotype would be a stay at home mom. Though in todays age we don’t see this as much, but it is still around us. In different situations both gender roles and stereotypes are said and done on a daily basis and we can’t avoid them because everyone is different.
Starting from hundreds and thousands ago gender inequality exists. Some would point out that there is not any gender inequality around us, but there are. For this paper, I am going to write about gender inequality. First, I would attach an argument from articles. However, I would object the articles and provide an explanation for my objection.
