In recent decades, concern about environmentalism has risen on a worldwide scale. Environmentalism is defined by Merriam Webster as the “advocacy of the preservation, restoration, or improvement of the natural environment; especially: the movement to control pollution” (Merriam Webster). In the United States, we have the Environmental Protection Agency, but the positions and policies that come from that department are highly politicized. Within the Christian community specifically, the controversy is not necessarily because of environmentalism itself as there is a mainstream consensus that Christians are to be good stewards of Creation. In Left, Right, & Christ, Lisa Sharon Harper describes God’s rule as “characterized by emphatic love, blessing, provision, and protection” (Harper and Innes 185). This theme is reflected in Genesis 2, which goes into great detail about the way that the Garden of Eden was beautiful and perfectly designed to be good. However, this theme is not just confined to the Creation narrative, it resonates throughout many parts of the Bible. Psalm 104 again echoes that the design of God’s creation causes it to be good and that God’s provision can be seen through nature. The psalmist writes, “They all depend on you to give them food as they need it. When you supply it, they gather it. You open your hand to feed them and they are richly satisfied” (Psalm 104:27-28). When liberal Christians read these passages and apply them to environmentalism, they usually conclude that humanity should care for the environment in the same way that God cares for all of creation. Humans should not destroy the Earth through their greedy desires, but should respect and protect it, as it was a God-given gift. The purpose of environmentalism is not just to preserve the environment we were entrusted with, it is also to ensure that the lifestyle of people with power does not continue to come at the expense of those without it, and to ensure that future generations do not have to struggle for resources. Harper delineates the history of oppression and destruction caused by greedy use of resources and irresponsible actions that damaged the environment. She gives examples of Native Americans being pushed off lands so miners could strip it of its resources, Polynesian islanders in danger of losing their land to rising ocean waters, and of the toxic side effects people have endured from exposure to radiation from atomic bombs and from exposure to pesticides (186-188). Similarly, in his book Jesus for President, Shane Claiborne goes as far as to call for a reduction in fossil fuel use because of the connection between war and oil (247). Regardless of what specific environment related issues liberal Christians focus on, it is clear that they believe that the end goal for environmental policies is not just to preserve some land, but to make the world a better place to live for all

The environment in America today is far from Eden, but there is a valiant battle being fought by many to return the earth to a more "natural" state. Green and clean is the preferred vision of the future1. This trend towards environmental awareness, or environmentalism, is a prominent theme in today’s American society. Politics, industry, marketing, and media all use the environment as a means to sell themselves. With such a high profile, it seems almost unbelievable that there was a time when the word environment was little known or not used. However, the period was not so long ago. Even before World War II nature was referred to as wilderness and wilderness existed to serve humans2. The shift from nature existing to serve humans to humans protecting the environment was not a very complex project, but rather one of many small influences and their resulting effects. Hence, the rise of environmentalism in American society is the result of gradual social changes, which created a shift in social values.

The United States has earned the reputation of a rebellious country since its birth in the revolution against Britain. Over the course of history, Americans have repeatedly confronted oppression, both foreign and national, through various wars and rights movements. Unfortunately, when it comes to environmental issues the average American has grown increasingly complacent. With a renewed urgency, government is working to combat global warming, but lacks the necessary social backing. This social support could be supplied through a new environmental movement that differs from past efforts. Throughout American history there have been three categories of environmental movements: preservation, conservation, and modern reform, all of which have failed to bring a ubiquitous social change and substantial impact on the overall environmental health.
An environmentalist is a person worships the environment and cares for nature more than people. Humans share a relationship with all creations of the earth. Christians proclaims that everything belong to God, so as Christians, we need to have the attitude that our belongings are his belongings. As stewards, we have the responsibility of being in charge of the earth. We have been placed in charge and are responsible for whatever happens to it, even though it does not belong to us, as we all know it belong to God. In Genesis 2:15, God took man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to work and take care of it.
College students are commonly drowning in stress, and oftentimes they have no idea how to relieve their stress in a healthy manner. They are either too busy or worried about stigma to go to traditional therapy, and it can be hard to find healthy coping skills for stress on your own. Ecotherapy, or basically interaction with nature, is a healthy and completely free way to reduce stress; all you need is the ability to go outside, preferably in a natural space like a forest or field, or in a park or similar area. Ecotherapy has been proven to reduce stress and relieve symptoms of mental illnesses, plus with the added benefit of promoting physical activity, which in itself can reduce stress, there really aren’t any cons to this form of therapy.

“The Historical Roots of Our Ecological crisis” has been the spark of a long standing debate about the impact of religion on environmental degradation. Comparing White and Whitney’s respective essay’s brings together two different perspectives ultimately shaping ones opinion on this subject of matter. Conclusively I can say Whitney’s points are valid and interesting as they identify the crucial flaws that White fails to take into account. Unlike most response papers, Whitney’s agreements with White are superficial in the broadest sense. The points that contend White’s thesis are all points that I agree as they pertain to the generation that I live in and I can see where her ideas stem from in day to day life.
Christian theology states that God created the earth and gave it as a gift to humans to be shared with all other living creatures. This belief is known as the “Creation-centered approach to the natural environment” (Massaro, p.163). This approach emphasizes the value of nature by recognizing humans as being an equal part of God’s creation under which all “species deserve protection” (Massaro, p.163). With such publicly known cases of pollution like the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico or Bethlehem Steel’s pollution of Lake Erie decades ago, it is evident that humans have been using the environment in accordance with the Stewardship or even the Dominion model, both of which place humans above all other creations. According to Massaro, Christian theology also explains that showing “disregard for the air that others breathe and the quality of the water they drink is to sin against God” (Massaro, p.162). This type of disregard destroys humankind’s relationship with all other living organisms.
“Unless humanity is suicidal, it should want to preserve, at the minimum, the natural life-support systems and processes required to sustain its own existence” (Daily p.365). I agree with scientist Gretchen Daily that drastic action is needed now to prevent environmental disaster. Immediate action and changes in attitude are not only necessary for survival but are also morally required. In this paper, I will approach the topic of environmental ethics from several related sides. I will discuss why the environment is a morally significant concern, how an environmental ethic can be developed, and what actions such an ethic would require to maintain and protect the environment.
Ecologists formulate their scientific theories influenced by ethical values, and in turn, environmental ethicists value nature based on scientific theories. Darwinian evolutionary theory provides clear examples of these complex links, illustrating how these reciprocal relationships do not constitute a closed system, but are undetermined and open to the influences of two broader worlds: the sociocultural and the natural environment. On the one hand, the Darwinian conception of a common evolutionary origin and ecological connectedness has promoted a respect for all forms of life. On the other hand, the metaphors of struggle for existence and natural selection appear as problematic because they foist onto nature the Hobbesian model of a liberal state, a Malthusian model of the economy, and the productive practice of artificial selection, all of which reaffirm modern individualism and the profit motive that are at the roots of our current environmental crisis. These metaphors were included in the original definitions of ecology and environmental ethics by Haeckel and Leopold respectively, and are still pervasive among both ecologists and ethicists. To suppose that these Darwinian notions, derived from a modern-liberal worldview, are a fact of nature constitutes a misleading interpretation. Such supposition represents a serious impediment to our aim of transforming our relationship with the natural world in order to overcome the environmental crisis. To achieve a radical transformation in environmental ethics, we need a new vision of nature.
There are lots of environmental issues going on globally. The earth faces problems such as pollution, global warming, waste disposal, and loss of biodiversity. These are just a small amount of issues out of the so many. These environmental problems pose an abundant amount of risk to the health of humans and animals. There needs to be a solution to all these problems and that is by informing others, so that way everyone can make the environment a better place.
