Ben Carson, one of the many republican candidates in the 2016 presidential election. Coming from Detroit, Michigan, Ben was previously a surgeon for many years, but was forced to resign after developing prostate cancer. After realizing his days in the field of medicine were numbered, he started taking interest in politics. Carson refers to himself as not being a politician, and says, “I don’t want to be a politician because politicians do what is politically expedient. I want to do what’s right.” Some of the things he believes to be “right” involve the issues under the category of the Free Market. After researching Ben and his views on the Free Market, I have come to the conclusion that Ben is a high six out of ten on the pro Free Market scale. One of the most controversial topics of Obama’s presidency is the …show more content…
installment of Obama care. He believes that the Affordable Care Act was the creation of an incompetent process from the beginning. More than $2 billion was spent on a website alone, not to mention the amount of hospital patients who are new policyholders that were never informed about the (up to) $5,000 of the first costs being on them. Carson believes that instead of having Obama care, we need to replace it with a system that enables consumers with awareness and choice to drive down costs. “The more power we put in the hands of consumers, the lower the costs will fall.” he says during the "Road to Majority" conference in June. Being a non-politician, Carson’s a big advocate for moving our Healthcare into the free market and exercising the belief that more government is always a poor excuse for a solution. Aside from Healthcare, Carson also has a lot to say about corporate taxes. America’s corporate tax rate is the second highest in the world. Japan has a higher corporate tax than us, but also a greater national debt. Ben says, “By being shortsighted and greedy, our government is driving businesses to other countries, which deprives our people not only of jobs, but our government of vital income.” He believes that the high corporate tax rate is causing our high national debt, one that may even end up higher than Japan. If a low tax rate were applied to everyone, including those corporations, the flow of jobs and income would be into our nation rather than out of our nation. Carson wants to get away from the high corporate taxation that our government is imposing and head towards a free market solution. The lower the corporate taxes, the lower our national debt, increasing jobs, income, and positively affecting our nation. What gets us into those corporate jobs in the first place?
Our education. Carson believes that his “education was a success not because some employee at the U.S. Department of Education cared, but because my teacher cared”. Instead of government coming in and telling the schools how and what they need to teach, he strongly believes that education decisions need to be made at the local level. Making these decisions at the local level will allow teachers to really teach. Choosing what content to teach, and how to creatively teach it is what teachers know best. But, because of the common core, they have been forced to do so in certain and strict ways, making it harder for students to learn, and for teachers to do their jobs. Also, People tend to respond to stimulation, and when there’s no stimulation, they tend to relax. By putting in the appropriate stimulation, it increases the competitive nature of education, making kids want to learn and be successful with their education. Limiting the government’s involvement in our education system will benefit students and teachers nationwide, yet another reason why Carson wants to become more free market
friendly. Wanting to do what is right over what is politically expedient, Carson wants to head towards a more free market way of living. In my opinion, I think Ben Carson is a high six on the Free Market scale. I gave Carson this rating based on his views on Healthcare, Corporate Taxation, and Education. Replacing Obama care with a system that enables choice, giving the people more freedom in the kind of healthcare they want, Lowering the corporate taxation to improve jobs, income, and our national debt, debt in which is rising, and lastly, limiting the government’s involvement in our education system, increasing the student’s productivity and level of education. The less involvement of government, the better our nation will be as a whole. Carson believes that the solutions become smaller and less apparent as more government gets involved, thus the reasoning behind his rate of six on the Free Market scale.
For example, “as Americans, we have quite a proud tradition of being represented by ignorant high-ranking officials.” Moore states students no longer have the information nor the skills needed in their libraries because of the budget cuts, despite that, “the ultimate irony in all of this is that the very politicians who refuse to fund education in America adequately are the same ones who go ballistic over how our kids have fallen behind the Germans, the Japanese, and just about every other country with running water and an economy not based on the sale of Chiclets.” Moore explains instead of helping the future of the United States and making school first, Americans are gaining knowledge that is useless to this society, such as facts about sports, he states, “Why on Earth am I retaining that useless fact? I don’t know, but after watching scores of guys waiting for the ESPN show, I think I do know something about intelligence and the American mind” nevertheless, they lack the information such as facts about own country. In addition, he mentions this nation has an obsession with testing, for example, resorting to testing and believe their problem would suddenly be fixed because of the test results improved. Although he claims Americans are obsessed with testing, he wants the, “so-called political leaders” to be tested the same way they test others in this
Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, is not one of the most well-known presidents to have ever served in office though he did do some good things during his presidency. The vice president’s journey to the presidency began after the assassination of the beloved president, John F. Kennedy. Before serving as president, he was the youngest Senator to ever serve as a majority leader and he sat in the House of Representatives. Although Johnson served two terms as president, he only ran in one election because of the death of Kennedy. However, the one election he ran in, he won in by a landslide (Ridings & Melver 231). Lyndon B Johnson, the Democratic president, who served from 1963-1969, might have been infamous for the decisions he made during the Vietnam War, but his Great Society and Civil Rights Act helped shape the nation in a good way.
Chris McCandless took a gamble with his life and as a result, he lost it. McCandless was a very adventurous, free spirited, young man that chose to do anything and everything he set his mind to. He was born into a family that he did not quite fit in with, it was a family of money with no emotions for love other than that for money of course. Due to his personal issues and the rebellion of his youth McCandless decided to go on an adventure traveling to Alaska and ultimately sacrificing his life from his risk taking tendencies. Although it may be true that McCandless could potentially suffer from a type of mental illness, people should consider that he is completely sane because he ultimately just wanted to travel and find himself while doing
I can support his idea that kindergarten through eight should learn the core knowledge, and high school should be left with most humanities and social science courses. It would lessen how long people need to attend college for their career. What I do not support is his idea of the lower percentile, there could be many intelligent people in that category that could change the world, but they did not show how much they could be valuable in their high school days. Some people could be genius in high school, but not so much in college, or vice versa. What would happen if the person that has what it takes to cure cancer, but no one listens to him because he was not “intelligent” enough to go to college?
...ation has been pivotal to his success as a politician and lawyer. Because of this fact, Ted Cruz is a deep believer of school choice. In January of this year, at a National School Choice Week rally, Ted Cruz announced that "School choice is the civil rights issue of the 21st century.”(Hassan). Cruz and other democratic lawmakers such a U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, are both pushing for reforms that give all classes of people access to be able to attend more charter schools, private schools and public schools. Before election to the United States Senate, Cruz was not particularly active in education policies such as No Child Left Behind; he did however say in 2012 at Tea Party Express Rally expressed the need to eliminate the Department of Education. Cruz said that “Education is too important for it to be controlled by a bunch of unelected bureaucrats in Washington.

“I do not believe that many American citizens . . . really wanted to create such immense human suffering . . . in the name of battling illegal immigration” (Carr 70). For hundreds of years, there has been illegal immigration starting from slavery, voluntary taking others from different countries to work in different parts of the world, to one of the most popular- Mexican immigration to the United States. Mexican immigration has been said to be one of the most common immigration acts in the world. Although the high demand to keep immigrants away from crossing the border, Mexicans that have immigrated to the U.S have made an impact on the American culture because of their self sacrifices on the aspiration to cross over. Then conditions
The eugenics movement was a period of time when it was believe that the genes of your father and mother gave rise to any and all traits, whether it be physical, mental, emotional, behavioral, and moral. Essentially, eugenics established that all of a persons appearance, skill, and potential was rooted in your genes.
Benjamin Rush was a very busy man who believed in many things. He believed in women's rights, prison reform, quality education, black rights, and better treatment for the mentally ill. As many would agree, Rush made a large impact on most of the ideas he stood for. For which idea he supported most is a controversial topic, but I would argue that Rush made the largest impact when he was trying to abolish slavery and racism. He even visited the opening of an African American church and dined with those involved in the opening. He also was one of few believers that imprisoned African Americans should be released because they were wrongly convicted. Additionally, he wrote several books about supporting the antislavery movement. He tried to help
Immigration is something that has been going on for decades. People immigrating to the United States are coming with the intentions of working for a better future. These people can come from Africa, Mexico, Europe, Afghanistan, Colombia, and many other countries all over the world. Instead of kicking these immigrants out of our country, we should give them the chance to prove themselves to the Americans that they are here to do better in life. Not by any means should we let just anyone come, but those who come looking for a better life and are willing to follow the rules should be given a chance.
(2014) exclaimed that why do 62 percent of parents think the Common Core is not perfect for their kids, despite it has fascinated some entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates and the secretary of education. In a case in point, parents should get more involved in the education of their children if they do not approve of measures being used. She agrees to the idea of a federal government using incentives to adopt their specific education program, but then again she only sees that parents complaining and not taking action. In another context, “parents have no choice about whether their kids will learn Common Core, no matter what school they put them in, if they want them to go to college, because the SAT and ACT are being redesigned to fit the new national program for education”. (Pullmann, J. 2014, September 24, p. 1). In fact, Porter (1989) states that the Common Core standards became as opposing to teachers and teaching occupation, and the tactics are not good strong enough for enabling teachers to be dependent. The teacher is often understood to be the planned without rules. Moreover, some voices against the criticism of the common core, they believe that it is meaningless because districts are still permitted to select which material goes out with stem the basis stated by the Common Core
Having an illness can have an affect on an individual either physically or mentally. Anyone can be a victim of a mental illness such as, children 's, adults and senior citizens, it is not rare. There are hundreds of different types of mental illnesses and with more to be discovered in the near future. Struggling to accomplish a certain assignment or not being able to speak properly, can all be signs of someone who is suffering from a mental illness. Major depression, autism, anxiety and Schizophrenia, are just some disorders that can affect an individual’s state of mind, and over time if not not cured, it could become highly dangerous, but medications and therapy play a key role in controlling it. For some individuals enjoying life becomes
Mental Illness is one of the growing illness in United States. According to National Alliance of Mental Illness”1 in 5 adults experiences a mental health condition every year. 1 in 20 lives with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.” If the person has a five family member, one of them could be diagnosed with mental illness. If there is 40 students in class room at least two of them could be living with serious mental illness. Although mental illness is something that familiar to us, there is still misunderstood and stigma towards mental illness. Then why many people still have a wrong knowledge and attitude toward mental illness?
Illegal immigration is getting into a foreign country without the required authentication or living beyond the period speculated within the authentication document. The world as a whole is facing a challenge on how to handle the cases of immigration. The latest development in immigration cases is what is currently happening in the Mediterranean Sea where Africans are migrating into Europe illegally. This paper will, however, not look into the case in Europe but rather what is happening in America at the moment. The paper will analyze immigration in America, why people immigrate to America and how the challenge can be mitigated without causing a lot of harm to the society. This paper will, therefore, take a keen interest what is happening on the America-Mexico border.
It is deeply alarming that ignoring mental health is systematically ignored as an important part of health promotion. This is shocking because, in theory, mental health is recognized as an important component of health, the close link between physical and mental health is recognized, and it is generally known that physical and mental health share many of the same social, environmental and economic components. We know that facilities dedicated to those with mental health problems are more vulnerable to the resources of physical diseases in many parts of the world, and it is essential that mental health promotion should not be equally affected
