“I have several students in the 8th grade who read on a second-grade level, because of the lack of teachers throughout the school districts.” As the teacher, Dr.Kristina Kirk from Oklahoma explains to the BBC news, that the lack of educational funding of schools is causing teachers to quit their jobs. Teachers are going on strike all across the United States. They are striking against their local government at City Council meetings and during school hours, they are protesting against the lack of educational funding towards the teacher's salaries and their student's books and resources. For example, teachers across the united states take on more than one job to support their everyday expenses. Even though the teachers take on several other jobs they still are living paycheck to paycheck. A teacher located in Oklahoma explained to CNN news “ I have been teaching algebra for thirteen years. On top of the teaching job, I also drive a bus part-time also do Lyft and Uber and I Empire for a Little League. I believe on top of my teaching and coaching that I have six or seven part-time jobs.” that is only one example of how low schools pay their teachers. Teachers should not have to take on more than one part-time job because that is putting more stress on the teachers. Teachers taking on more than one job outside of teaching can lead to less time spent with their families. Vice news explains “American Education spending fell by six hundred dollars per student in 2009 through 2014 meanwhile public schools are growing at staggering rates.” Cutting six hundred dollars per student a year is a lot of money. The money would have went been used towards school books and learning supplies that can aid in the student's education. In West Virginia a teacher explained why she was going on strike, she said “I have twenty-nine textbooks for eighty-seven students.” so she joined the strike so that her class can receive funding for school supplies. In Oklahoma, their school district’s are cutting schools sessions to four days of the week instead of five days a week. Cutting School down to four days a week can be bad for the students. It can lead to students not learning information that can help them further on in their lives. Also, an extra day off of school can lead to children doing more crime. Because of the parents can be working while their kids are in school. The school districts are taking away the necessities of each student learning process. Teachers and students are walking out of class and taking a stand for the local government to raise the funding so the school can function
