Is College Worth It? Everybody tells you to go to college. They say that college is necessary to lead a successful life. Authors like Anthony J. Rotherham and Kelci Lynn Lucier agree in their articles that getting a college education is worth it. There are many benefits of going to college including higher pay, more jobs, lower unemployment rate, and better health. A college education is a huge factor in leading a successful and fulfilling life. For these reasons, getting a college education is valuable. A college education opens up doors to many more jobs. For example, “More job openings, more chances at promotions, and more flexibility with jobs you take (and keep) are just a few of the doors that will be opened …show more content…
For example, “Americans with four-year college degrees made 98 percent more an hour on average than people without a degree.” (Leonhardt, David. “Is College Worth It? Clearly, New Data Say.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 27 May 2014, www.nytimes.com/2014/05/27/upshot/is-college-worth-it-clearly-new-data-say.html) With being paid nearly twice as much as high school graduates, there should not be too much worry about how bills would be paid. On top of that, there will likely be leftover money that can be spent for entertainment purposes, pay off debt, or put in a retirement and emergency savings account. Also, “Another recent study by the Pew Research Center found that the median yearly income gap between high school and college graduates is around $17,500.” (Osborn, Peter. “Do College Grads Really Earn More Than High School Grads?” Cornerstone University, 29 Nov. 2016, www.cornerstone.edu/blogs/lifelong-learning-matters/post/do-college-grads-really-earn-more-than-high-school-grads.) That amount of money can boost paying off many kinds of debt greatly. Or the money can be used to put in a savings account, and if that amount of money is put in every year, then the money would add up pretty quickly and in about six years it would be over six figures. Having leftover money would minimize stress, and will be a factor of living a high quality and fulfilling life. Of course, there are many non college graduates who make as much money as some college graduates. However, “According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2010, the median weekly earnings for someone with some college but no degree [was a mere] $712, compared to $1,038 for a college graduate.” (Rotherham, Andrew J. “Actually, College Is Very Much Worth It.” SpringBoard, 19 May 2011, pp. 86–87.) Since these are the average amounts that high school graduates and college
Thousands of people end up enrolling in college after they graduate from high school. Most of them want to further their education so they can make something out of themselves. It is a common idea among many, that college will end up increasing one’s average income. In the article, The College Payoff Illusion, by Edwin S. Rubenstein, he wrote that “In 1997, college graduates earned an average of $40,508 versus just $23,970 for non-college graduates”. The statistic shows that graduates are making more but does it have more to do with their college degree or their personality?
In their article, Owen and Sawhill appeal to ethos by comparing statistics on college graduates’ income to the income of those who did not attend college. One figure Owen and Sawhill present is “research shows that 23- to 25-year-olds with bachelor’s degrees make $12,000 more than high school graduates but by age 50, the gap has grown to $46,500”(641) They
College is thought of as what every parent wants for their child, so they can go off andmake something of themselves. For the most part, this is true. Those who attend college arebetter off than those who do not, on average, earning far more than their undereducatedcounterparts. College is a worthwhile investment and should be pursued by all who have thechance because it helps students further their knowledge, it is a place to find who you are, and itgives them a different perspective of the world.College is worth the cost because if college was available for everybody and collegedegrees were handed out as commonly and at the same rate as high school diplomas then collegewould not be that special. Therefore, college would just be an extension of high school. Ifanyone could get their hands on a degree, how would you be able to get the job you want? It isbetter for college to cost money because if a student really wants to attend college and furthertheir education, they should have already been willing to pay or to find a way to pay for collegeto get the upper hand on the general
Due to the fact that a majority of people want a good amount of income, they choose to go to college. Majority of people choose to go to college so that they are able to receive a better salary and afford more possessions. Going to college will help you receive a better wage and a better job compared to those that only graduate from high school. College graduates are estimated to earn far more money over the course of a lifetime than compared to high school graduates (“President’s Perspective: Why go to College?”). This means that people who go to college are estimated to earn more money in one life time than that of someone who only graduated from high school. It is not always certain that going to college will get you a better salary but many statistics show that going to college can help. One of these statistics is the starting salaries of college graduates compared to those of a high school graduate. The starting salaries of college graduates are better than that of people who only graduated from high school. Starting salaries of college graduates are also steadily increasing over time. The overall average starting salary for a U.S. class of 2013 college graduates stands at $45,327, an increase of 2.4 percent over the report...
College gives its graduates the greatest ability to achieve a higher paying job. Furthermore, adults who attend college earn higher wages over those who do not. As emphasized in “College Grads Find Big Degree of Debt, Difficulty; American Families Start to Wonder Whether Education Cost Is Worth It” by Patrice Hill, a staff writer for The Washington Times, employees who have a bachelors degree earn an average of 84% more than people with only a high school degree. In accordance with these numbers, the results of a study conducted by the Treasury and Education Departments in 2011 show that college graduates with full time jobs earned 64% more per week than high school graduates. A similar study conducted in 2013 showed that a full-time worker with a bachelors degree earns 79% more than one without a college degree (Hill). There are numerous studies that verify that people who attend college earn higher wages. Furthermore, college graduates earn more desirable jobs. As Justin Draeger, CEO of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, states in his article “College Is Still Worth the Expense”, the U.S. government classifies jobs in zones one through six. Lower work zones pay the least and are full of non-college graduates. The highest zones pay the most and are filled with college graduates. According to the US government, the median pay for job zone thre...
Sometimes students question themselves if college is really worth it? That question has many answers that only a student can answer and decide for him or herself. For some students college can have a positive, life-long outcome. However, there are many obstacles when it comes to college. A student has to be very dedicated in school, and they have to know how to manage their personal life, school and work. College seems like it has more negative effects than it does positive for some people. For the following reasons college is not worth the cost because it is very difficult to find jobs after graduating or they find a job that is not in their field, some students who are not academically prepared wind up dropping out of school and wasting their money and some students struggle to balance school life, personal life and work life. As a result these students end up dropping out of school.
College graduates make more money than high school graduates. The average annual income for someone without a college education
When comparing the earnings someone would receive based on their education - high school diploma, associate's degree, bachelor’s degree - the earnings are immensely different from the beginning earnings that may be earned during high school or in the years right after receiving a high school diploma. The median weekly earnings for a student with a high school diploma is $644 less than a person with a bachelor’s degree and $1,237 less than a person with a professional degree (Doc A). Over time, this difference will increase and will enable someone to purchase things easier such as a house or a new car. Basing the decision on whether or not to go to college just based off of the college tuition isn’t a good choice when looking at the amount of income that will be obtained a week into a job. Waiting a year or two before going to college isn’t necessarily more beneficial even if someone works during the years taken off.

People with a college degree tend to make more money than those who didn’t attend college. This is because most of the jobs that have a higher earning require a college degree. People that only get their school diploma don’t make as much money as someone with a college degree. A study done suggest that people who have a college degree are more likely to get hired because they have an education compared to those who don’t. According to the United States Bureau people who achieved the current degrees earned the following median salaries. People with a doctorate degree earn $100,000 or more. With a bachelor’s degree people earn $58,000 and people with an associates earn $42,000 or more(Lucier). A High School diploma is not worth as much as a college degree. A High school diploma means less today because of the shaping of the world. People who only have a high school diploma earn only about $33,000. These numbers also depend on the type of field that you are going into. For example, people that have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or management will earn a little bit more (Lynn). They will earn more because these fields are really important. In my opinion the United States has been transformed
It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.

This is how much more money you will make on average with a bachelors degree compared to only having a high school education.
This is only taking into account the savings from people that graduate from high school. Not to mention there are also huge financial gains by paying people to get good grades. High school and college graduates are more likely to contribute to the national GDP and less likely to rely on social welfare programs. These savings are fantastic.
It is a well-known fact that 4-year college graduates, on average, earn better salaries than high school graduates and those with associate’s degrees. According to the Federal Reserve of New York, a bank that plays an important role in the national economy, there is a $30,000 difference between the annual wages of a 4-year college graduate and a high school graduate. Life after graduation is easier for college graduates in regards to economic stability, because of their increased earning.
