Gun Control in Schools
Jeff Cooper once said ¨Safety is something that happens between your ears, not something you hold in your hands.¨ The repeated tragedies and the frightening incidents of the recent school shootings, has sparked a deeply divided response to school safety. Should teachers be armed with a concealed weapon in the classroom? Bringing a gun into a classroom may seem to some as the answer, but the risk far outweighs the benefit. At anytime, a student with the wrong intentions could get possession of the gun and cause harm. Also, if teachers were to be armed, students could question their safety. Finally, we will be putting teachers in a uncomfortable situation that many might want to avoid.

Imagine walking into a building with all these safety features and add the thought of knowing guns are present. While you think you would feel safer, it may make students perceive that they should be fearful and that they are not safe at school. A child that feels unsafe may have behavior issues or poor academic outcomes.
Good teachers are, by nature, nurturers. They are trained to solve problems in peaceful ways. When confronting an armed attacker, a teacher would be required to have character traits much like police officers and members of the military. Teachers enter their professions to teach kids, just as trained law enforcements officers choose to protect citizens by force if necessary. No amount of training will prepare teachers to grab their gun and respond to a mass shooting, and the potential for deadly unintended consequences is enormous
