Hurtful Bystanders, instigate the bullying by prodding the bully to begin. Other bystanders encourage the bullying by laughing, cheering, or making comments that further stimulate the bully. Some join in the bullying once it has begun. Most bystanders passively accept bullying by watching and doing nothing. Often without realizing it, these bystanders also contribute to the problem. Passive bystanders provide the audience a bully craves and the silent acceptance that allows bullies to continue their hurtful behavior. Helpful Bystanders are bystanders who also have the power to play a key role in preventing or stopping bullying. They directly intervene, by discouraging the bully, defending the victim, or redirecting the situation away from bullying. Some helpful bystanders get help, by rallying support from peers to stand up against bullying or by reporting the bullying to adults (Whatcanyoudo). Bystanders often do not even reacted because they are afraid. They are scared of what people will think if they stick up for someone. It is hard for some bystanders to tell an adult because they do not want to draw attention to themselves or they think by telling someone it would just make the bullying worse. Many bystanders do not know what to do so they just don’t do anything at all which is actually the worst thing you could
A bully is someone who picks on other people, because they think it is the way to solve their problems. There are many types of bullying, there is physical, verbal, and mental. Children that are ages five through eleven began using verbal abuse and some even use physical abuse (Garrett 33). People estimated that one hundred and sixty thousand students miss school every day, and twenty-eight million missed school days per year, due to fear of being bullied (Garrett 36). Six million boys and four million girls are involved in fights from being bullied or bullying others (Garrett 33). Also, there is an estimate that over five hundred and twenty-five thousand people are bullies in America (Garrett 35). “Freshman, particularly are the victims of bullies in high school, especially if they are small and smart” (Garrett 31-32). Many people are bullied because of the way they look, or the way they act.“ Children from violent homes are three or four times more likely to become a bully” (Garrett 30). Some bullies may make fun of people because they were made fun of, beaten, or unwanted as they grew up. Most children become bullies to gain power (Verial). Bullies do what they do so they “feel competent, successful, to control someone else, to get some relief from their own feelings of powerlessness” (Garrett 72).When children grow up they may become bullies, because of the abusive environment they were raised in by their parents.
Well Into Adulthood, Study Finds "More studies are beginning to confirm the sometimes serious psychological effects of bullying, particularly for the bullied, like increased risk for depression and anxiety" (Walton). With that being said, Bullying can cause victims to have a lower self esteem and think lowly of themselves. Constant verbal and physical attacks from a bully can make the victim feel very lowly of themselves. Worst of all, these victims will start to actually believe what the bully has to say about them. This can later cause mental disorders such as depression and anxiety to develop.
The three important components to bullying are as followed; bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions, bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time, and bullying involves an imbalance of power and strength (Olweus1). At one point in time, bullying had meant a push on the playground, or a mean slur, however bullying has progressed from then. Bullying can be described as the systematic abuse of power (Smith3). Kids take it upon themselves to hurt, and bring down others, which is not justification whatsoever. It is hurtful, and spiteful. Regardless of your personal feelings about someone, ...
Bullying, it is a major issue around many people, the world, and often reported in the news. Many who experienced bullying with or without knowing that they have been bullied or even bullied other people. There are many reasons for people to become bullies, and it is happening all around us. Bullying comes in many different forms: physical bullying, verbal bullying, relational bullying, psychological bullying, and social bullying. In the past, bullying can only happen in person, but with improving technologies, there is a new kind of bullying called cyber-bullying.
Everyone has been bullied or encountered someone being bullied at some point of their life. Whether it would be physically or verbally both can be exceedingly traumatizing and can have a long-term psychological influence on children’s development. Majority people may define bullying in a more physical term; nevertheless that’s not always the case. The act of bullying can occur in several ways and in reality affect the individual in the same way. Bullying is generally defined as repeated, negative, and harmful actions focused at target throughout a course of time, exhibiting a sense of power difference between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993; Limber & Mihalic, 1999 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). A survey was conducted in the United States estimating that over six million children, about 30% in grade six through ten have experienced frequent bullying in a school environment (Nansel, 2001 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). Many people might debate that bullying is something that every child goes through and is simply a part of growing up, although there are several damaging consequences that happens to the child’s brain. Bullying causes the child to feel upset, isolated, frightened, anxious, and depressed. They feel like they reason they are being picked on is because there is something wrong with them and may even lose their confidence feel unsafe going to school (Frenette, 2013 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005) Anthropologically, sociologically, or psychologically, bullying can be analyzed through different perspectives and several questions can be asked based on the topic:
Bullying by definition is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions. [Why] Bullying has grown new outlets over the last decade. With social media outlets and text messaging added to the game, bullying is not just about getting tormented face to face anymore. Cyber bullying can include sending out mean or threatening emails and instant messages about a person, spreading rumors about someone and also include photos that a person would consider to be humiliating. [Chamberlin] Bullying can have many outlets. The most common form of bullying is still face to face confrontation. But the other outlets, such as cyber bullying are definitely not something to take lightly or consider low on a scale of importance. Sexual harassment, racial differences, not being “cool enough”, or just simply being viewed as a weaker individual may attribute to many of the reasons a person is preyed on.
Bullying is a terrible thing. People that do things to hurt a person, need to know that they are doing it. If they do know they need help. A person might be bullied for a lot of reasons. Someone often bully’s another person because, most of the time, they are hurt inside. According to the article “Tales of Bulling”, the bully might have problems at home or school. The thing most people ask about is which is worst, bystander or bully? Bystanders do nothing helpful and bullies start trouble.
There are many different ways that people can be bullied. One of the most popular type of bullying today is Physical bullying. Physical bulling is when a person uses physical actions to gain power and control over another person. Physical bullying usually involves hitting, kicking, tripping, pinching and pushing or damaging property. Some people get bullied in that way by others and sometimes it could get out of hand. Another kind of bullying is Verbal bullying. Verbal bullying is when a person uses words, statements and name calling to gain power and control over another person. Verbal bullying includes name calling, insults, teasing, intimidation, homophobic or racist remarks, or verbal abuse. People who bully others use words to downsize a person and make them feel bad and unwanted to everyone. Covert is another category of bullying. It is often harder to recognize and can be carried out behind the bullied person's back. It is designed to harm someone's social reputation and/or cause humiliation. Cyber bullying is another type of bullying. It is when a teen uses the Internet, a cell phone or other technology to harass, threaten, embarrass or target another person.
Bullying is a major problem and needs to be prevented. A bully is defined as aggressive behavior or to harm a person repeatedly overtime. School bullying can start anytime from elementary to high school. Over 5.7 teens in the United States are involved in school bullying(about.com). Boys tend to be more physically bullied as girls are more prone to being bullied verbally. According to the National Conference of State Legislature, boys who are often bullied can be five times as likely to be more or severely depressed and four times more likely to be suicidal. Girls are three times more likely to be severely depressed and eight times more likely to be suicidal. Some children are afraid to go to school, which can lead to poor grades or lack of concentration. It is hard for students to focus at school when they are worried about their bully. Bullying can make school a place of fear and can lead to school violence.
Bullying is a behavior that can happen repeatedly if the victim doesn’t take a stand, this then will encourage the bully to repeat the offense. Bullying involves physical and verbal acts to harm the victims. Physical bullying victims suffers unnecessary kicking or pushing or even physical assaults by more than one or two people. Verbal bullying is another way to harm the victims of this type of bullying involves using offense or racist word to offend the victim. According to (Wolke et al., 2013) there are various reasons behind the cruel nature of the children who like to harm others.
Bullying includes actions that can be physical, mental, or emotional and result in one person having power over another (Jenson, Jeffery M.,et al). There is also Cyber bullying which is using technology to degrade and belittle the victim (“Teenager Bullying”). Physical bullying is the most easily identified form of bullying. It is when the bully tries to bodily control the victim by hitting or striking (“Teenage Bullying”). Emotional bullying is when the bully is trying to get the victim to feel lonely or secluded from others (“Teenage Bullying”). Emotional bullying is often a method that girls use instead of boys (“Teenage Bullying”).
There are four different types of bullying. These are physical, verbal, indirect, and cyber bullying. Physical bullying includes any type of physical contact towards another person that is unwanted, such as hitting, kicking, pinching, punching, even spitting. Breaking others possessions or simply taking their belongings are also examples of physical bullying. When the parents physically abuse children, they often feel as if it is their fault they are being knocked around. If the child has no one to talk to, or no one to tell, the physical abuse can go on for years and cause multiple problems for the child, even in their adult years.
Have you ever been personally bullied by another person? Maybe you have not had your head forced into a locker, but verbally hurt? Bullying today can be quite serious. Bullying is when someone tries to hurt another person by hitting them or by simply hurting them with their words. Bullying is something that can have a huge impact on its victims. It might be something that lasts throughout their lives, or something that might cause them to take their lives. Bullies make small groups so that they can pick on other students who are small, fragile, and who can not defend themselves. Picking on someone should not be accepted because it can affect a person's well being in a drastic way. Bullying is believed to be a normal part of school life. However, when people begin to have that mentality they forget that bullying is psychologically and physically harmful to both the victim and the bully.
Bullying of students in school is an abuse that affects and produces a number of negative experiences on the victim. It is proven that those students who bully do so merely because they see themselves superior than those being bullied. They use this as a tactic to make juniors fear them and show them that they are not equal in any way. Some will even bully as a revenge of the bullying they suffered in the past. I have been bullied before and I know some of the effects it could have on a person. Bullying is a serious cause of many issues and has effects that may be long lasting.
Damage to or taking someone else’s belongings may also constitute as physical bullying. Verbal is another type of bullying including: name calling, insulting, making racist, sexist or homophobic jokes, remarks or teasing, using sexually suggestive or abusive language, offensive remarks. Indirect bullying which is spreading nasty stories about someone, exclusion from social groups, being made the subject of malicious rumours, sending abusive mail, and email and text messages (cyber bullying), and last is cyber bullying which is any type of bullying that is carried out by electronic medium. There are 7 types including: 1. Text message bullying 2. Picture/video clip bullying via mobile phone cameras 3. Phone call bullying via mobile phones 4. E-mail bullying 5. Chat-room bullying 6. Bullying through instant messaging (IM) and 7. Bullying via
