Missionaries: Friend or Foe?
For centuries, individuals called “missionaries” have journeyed place to place to achieve their goal of conversion. A missionary is a person strongly in favor of a program, set of principles, religion, etc., who attempts to persuade or convert others. A missionary can also be a person sent by a church into an area to carry on evangelism or other activities, such as educational or hospital work. There have been many periods of time throughout history in which these mortals have remarkably affected nations and formed them into what they are today, such as the state of Hawaii, the United States of America, and some countries in Africa. There are still many groups of missionaries existent today, continuing their work to convert people to concur with their beliefs. There are some people who believe that missionaries have good prestige on society. These people concur that these groups, or individuals, bring abundances of beneficial assets that advance a locality. While some argue that missionaries have a positive impact, missionaries are a negative influence on society because they bring unwanted dilemmas and often achieve their goal of conversion through physical coercion.
These organizations, called missionaries, are a negative influence on society because they induce issues for the individuals targeted for conversion. One example of this is what occurred early in the Hawaiian Islands. In 1820, a group of missionaries called the New England Congregationalists came to Hawaii. These missionaries were strict and strongly opposed to self-indulgences, such as drinking and gambling (“Hawaii Timeline”). Captain James Cook and his crew came to Hawaii in 1778. Bringing along many diseases such as, syphilis, gonorrhea, tuberculosis, and viral hepatitis.(Blaisdell, p.44) Native Hawaiians were not immune to these diseases, they were unable to be cured therefore died and a massive depopulation occurred. An estimated 500,000 Hawaiians were living in Hawaii before Western Contact, and in 1878 less than 45,000 Hawaiians remained.(Trask, p.10). With the rapid decrease of Hawaiians, also came the fact that their culture was in danger.
Many students who are enrolled in FFA are already heading in the right direction to a bright future. FFA has many career benefits within the program. Any of the career development events (CDE’s) have something that will tie to a career in agriculture or to a career of other sorts. According to the National FFA Organization, “FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on real-world agricultural skills”(“Statistics”). There are so many careers that tie into FFA, and many of them have to do with agriculture. Not every career that has to do with agriculture is about farming. Missionaries played a major role in transforming the native communities. Missionaries believed they were helping the inhabitants by “converting and civilizing” the indigenous. They also used their power to exploit any resources they could find to benefit the church and their home land. The spreading of Christian views and beliefs were very popular amongst the French and Spanish societies. Both the French and Spanish missionaries took it upon themselves to travel to the “New World” to spread the message of Christ. Many of the missionaries were not prepared to deal with the very different lifestyles and religious views that the natives had. The missionaries had to use many tactics to relay the message of Christ to the native people of the Americas. Many missionaries would struggle at converting the natives while on their religious quest to mission. Both the French and the Spanish would feel as though it is their duty to try and convert these pagan believers to Catholicism. This would ultimately lead to conflict amongst the different cultures. This paper will discuss the many different tactics used by both the French and Spanish missionaries in trying to convert and spread Catholicism. It will also discuss how they also viewed the lifestyle and culture of the natives. Lastly I will discuss how the natives responded to the missionaries and what they thought of these foreign invaders.
Most people aren’t familiar with ways our government is trying to lower health care costs of the homeless by putting them in houses, here is their chance to learn. “Housing First” approaches are aimed at reducing the number of homeless people in metropolitan cities, especially in USA and Canada. In Tulsa, the Mental Health Association operates housing models that are successful using the Housing First approach, but only with a success rate of around nine percent. These programs are able to help people achieve self-sufficiency. Special consideration is given to people who have mental illnesses. The main advantage of the approach is it makes an efficient use of the existing systems and services, and then eliminates the need for new ones. The approach has been said to lead to better quality of life, less alcohol and substance use among the beneficiaries, and less use of emergency services by the beneficiaries. Despite all of the advantages and purposes, the program has many challenges that make one think it’s not as successful as first projected. This could lead to program loss or the challenges being dealt with appropriately. If the government wants to use money to help end homelessness, they should put it towards resources and organizations that can, not towards homes where the homeless go to be ignored.
Japan has been a home for Shinto and Buddhist religions for centuries. The Christian missionaries during the 16th, 19th and 20th centuries worked hard to evangelize the Japanese nation but could not get desired success. There efforts in past failed partly due to sanctions imposed by the local rulers. The Jesuits missionaries traveled with Spanish and Portuguese traders to many areas of America and Asia-Pacific and established their churches and religious missions. They were funded, sponsored and trained by their respective governments in order to spread Christianity. At several places they preached the Christian faith by force but the aboriginal population did not accept it wholeheartedly. Initially the Jesuits targeted the elite class of the country and a large number was converted. The rulers also forced their subject to embrace the same faith. About 300,000 Japanese were converted in the first phase. Later on, Christianity was prohibited as the rulers started seeing them as a threat to their authority. Following a change of regime, the ban was lifted and missionaries were again allowed to enter Japan. Like many Native American tribes, the Japanese also resisted the new religion. As a result, presently Christians form only 1% of the total population in Japan. This paper is focused on how the Christian religion was introduced in Japan, the evolution of evangelism, establishment of churches, the restrictions and hurdles faced by the missionaries and priest of the new religion and the response of Japanese nation towards an alien faith. As I worked with younger children for several years, I try whenever possible, to be an advocate on their part to help them get the most enriching educational experience they can to better prepare them to enter the school system. Over the past years of working at the child development center on Katterbach Kaserne in Germany, I quickly worked my way from a program assistant, who perform entry level tasks such as changing diapers and cleaning, to a lead with my own classroom, the lead oversees all aspects of the class room from the children’s curriculum to room layouts and the training of other teachers in the room. I feel I was able to rise to this position so quickly due to my understanding of needs of children in this age group as well as the confidence to lead staff implement my high standards. In the process of doing so I have gathered information from a majority of employees at the center regarding concerns and difficulties they have and what, collectively, we teachers think would be the best solution: reorganizing age groups of classrooms to elevate the children’s education as well as our safety implementations. I then elected to write an intelligent, irrefutable essay using my understanding of argumentative writing to the director of the CDC. The work that resulted is proof of my knowledge and intellectual capacity to effectively execute a paper maintaining the standards of college level composition and rhetoric.
People often times single me out for being a christian. They just love asking me about touchy subjects to see my response. And this is because, unfortunately, there are so many christians who have this idea that the whole world needs to see things the same way they do. You see so much hate coming out of a religion that claims to preach peace and love. Christians see it as protecting the bible but it just comes across as ignorant. I am not saying I don’t share in the opinions of many christians, but more than anything I am saying that christians need to learn that not everyone in the world is going to see it the same way they will. When it comes to sin, same sex marriage, and living a holy life there are more than one opinion on what is right. So, you can’t justify all of the hate-acts in the name of your religion. Instead use all that energy you waste on hate to love and help those around you, despite whether you think they are “right or wrong”. I believe that that’s what God is more concerned about.
High school students should not have their summer break shortened because it gives them more time to recover from a long academic year. During the school year, students are expected to complete assignments and study for tests while participating in extracurricular activities and maintaining part-time jobs. Very little time is left for self-reflection and leisure. As a result, it is common for high school students to feel worn down by a rigorous schedule.
