The New York Times article entittled “Are College Lecture Unfair” by Annie Murphy Paul provides a case that the old and well-known tradition of lectures should be forgotten. She affirms her notion by citing several research studies that speculate if one “flips” the classroom, it creates an environment conducive for learning. However, I agree and disagree with some of her pointers she present to the readers. I feel that if one is motivated, then, one may do just fine. To elaborate on my standpoint, the little time I’ve spent at York College. I’ve seen that some students care more of the grade they receive for the class, rather then the knowledge they could take away at the end of the semester and apply it to their everyday life. In other
words, lectures are not unfair. Traditional lectures allow students to be more engaged, they are able to visualize, analyze the lesson and reflect on the activity that is occurring in the classroom. Without even knowing, students are applying social cognition to a given lesson. Also, adding quizzes every week to a lecture class improves ones grades and retention. Of course this will help students master the material that is being taught weekly, instead of midterms at the middle of the semester. All, if any class, has students that procrastinate and cram when finals and exams are approaching. Here one can apply the Heuristics process that the cognitive processing results in information overload. Therefore these procrastinators will benefit from the frequent assessments. All in all, I feel that the author missed some points. For example, relating race to economics. Why not relate one’s self-motivation versus students who party and play sports. It is impossible to not say that the one who chooses to work harder will be do better than the other who chose to party. Honestly speaking, I believe that all class should have active learning, as well as there’s other ways to improve student participation in the classroom.
Edmundson was considered one of the “interesting” teachers because of the fact he would tell jokes in order to keep the students interested, since it was the one way he figured worked; however, he did not “teach to amuse…or for that matter, to be merely interesting” (Edmundson, Greene-Lidinsky 390). College students get to pick their professors and they have to ability to find out if the professor is to their liking, or else they can just drop the class and/or find a better-suited professor. Edmundson felt as though the student’s “passion seems to be spent,” and that “university culture” is becoming more and more “devoted to consumption and entertainment” (Edmundson, Greene-Lidinsky 391). In her article, “Lecture Me. Really”, Molly Worthen addresses the issue college students know all too well: how to lecture properly. Published in the New York Times, Worthen writes a passionate article about lecturing but from the perspective of a professor. Worthen presents the idea that lecturing, although some may think ineffective in the classroom, is a way to truly challenge and engage students into critically thinking. Worth dictates this idea with an excellent build up logical argument but lacks the proper evidence to support her claims creating a faulty argument.
Most students do care about their grades and want to succeed, so they may go into argue their grades. As shown in examples though, parents become very upset with their kids if they do not achieve up to their high class standards. A very good point is made by Shepard. Not all kids are good enough to receive A's. Parents need to be satisfied with a B because that is in the upper part of the college usually. Obtaining an A or A plus should be almost a honor. In the article “College is Not a Commodity. Stop treating it like one,” Hunter Rawlings explains how people today believe that college is a commodity, but he argues that it’s the student’s efforts; which gives value to their education. Rawlings states that in recent years college has been looked at in economic terms, lowering its worth to something people must have instead of earn. As a professor Rawlings has learned that the quality of education has nothing to do with the school or the curriculum, but rather the student’s efforts and work ethic. Rawlings explains the idea that the student is in charge of the success of his or her own education, and the professor or school isn’t the main reason why a student performs poorly in a class. Annie Murphy Paul’s “Are College Lectures Unfair?” is a well-written research based argument, but is it solid? In her article she questions “Does the college lecture discriminate? Is it biased against undergraduates who are not white, male and affluent?” She spends the rest of her essay providing evidence that active learning would benefit students who are “female, minorities and low income first generation college students”, while passive learning provides a bases for discrimination against the under- privileged. The lecture was filled with anticipation of what the speakers might say, what their thoughts on the book were and why it was chosen. When I first listen to the first speaker it sound a lot like our little group meetings and a question flu by “why did I come” or “they are just repeating what I know”. It was only when the first speaker got to the end was went I became more interested.
American society has started to take education for granted. Today it is so easy for most anyone to afford or to be accepted into a college that you wind up with people being here to socialize instead of learn and that leads to a decline in overall performance because it turns the atmosphere away from learning and into more of a four year party before the real world. It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
General education classes are focused on expanding the intellectual horizon of students. Many of the classes for general education don’t have anything to do with specific career choices but are required regardless. While this seems to be nice and good on the surface, it has problems. If colleges only cared about letting students expand their horizons instead of helping people graduate in a timely manner, there would be many more “college surfers”. Those people go to college aimlessly in order to pass the time. They do not have a definite goal and are not able to get a degree in order to graduate and contribute as a member of society. This would mean that taxpayers are wasting millions of dollars for nothing. Although it is important to keep learning as you grow older, there also needs to be a bigger purpose to life than just class cruising. Within recent decades, college has become a more easily available path than it has been for the past generations. In a current news release, The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that, “Of the 2.9 million youth age 16 to 24 who graduated from high school between January and October 2014, about 68.4 percent were enrolled in college in October” (BLS Economic News Release from April 2015). When a student graduates high school, most of them intend to continue on to college. They have the idea that, while there, they can break away from all the general classes and just focus on what they want to learn. However, for almost all students, they find that this is not the reality. Just like high school, they find that they have to take approximately two years in general studies in order to attend and graduate with the major of their choice. General education classes should not be required because a majority of the information learned has already been covered in past years. Most of the courses do not benefit a student 's major, and the total amount of required hours for these classes can become a big waste of time and money.
Students go to college in search of knowledge, a new lifestyle, and the hope of a job after graduation. For many young adults, college is a rite of passage into an independent, mature new lifestyle. Not only is higher education a rite of passage, for some, it is also an opportunity to have a better life. Overall, college is a wonderful part of many people’s lives, yet the way the college education system is conducted wastes students time and money. College is basically composed of two parts: general education classes and major specific classes. General education courses are the source of wasted time and money, and should not be required of students. A few of the problems associated with general education classes are that they are basically a repeat of high school, unfortunately they can be the demise of students, they are costly, and they waste time.

A statement from the Huffington Post states, “From a very young age, we are told the importance of getting good grades. Especially in high school, we are told time and time again that our grades affect what college we will get into. While grades are extremely important, people often forget about the importance of learning, not just getting good grades. There is a difference between the grade received in a course and the amount of learning that took place in the course.” Parents and institutions should teach the importance of learning. ...at previously, sometimes in the midst of a discussion, people forget that there are two sides of a story and not everyone has to agree to yours. What we learn from our books or our studies is not what is necessarily important. What we learn from our peers and our professors is what’s important. Learning is more than absorbing fact, it is acquiring understanding, and it is being passionate about the material you are given. Each piece that we have read in class, and each comment that we make impacts a person no matter how little it seems. The education systems focuses too much about effective methods of teaching and not enough about effective methods of learning. However, this course felt like we were learning something instead trying to finish the curriculum. As Albert Einstein once said, “education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think”.
