Obsession is persistent, and uncontrollable idea, image, thought, or emotion that one cannot help thinking although it creates anxiety and distress. In Araby by James Joyce, the main character has deep obsession with his friend’s older sister. The obsession takes over all of his thoughts as he awaits the arrival of his uncle to receive money to spend at the market to surprise his one sided lover.
