As a first-year Graduate student in Health Services Administration, I am eager to improve the health status of our community, especially the poor and under-served. While volunteering at The Jewish Hospital for three months, I recognized Mercy Health was similarly committed to bettering the community. As such, I was elated when I learned of the Mercy Health - West Hospital Internship. I believe my success at The Jewish Hospital, experience analyzing large data sets for over a year, unique perspective, and interest in acquiring hospital finance and operations experience make me an ideal candidate for the Mercy Health - West Hospital summer Internship position. My success at The Jewish Hospital stems from; completing tasks ahead of schedule, actively seeking projects to increase my knowledge of healthcare, and aiding the organization determine their impact on the community it serves. Also, I have been working for over a year as a Data Management Associate at KAO Brands analyzing manufacturing data on skincare products (approximately 1,000,000 LB per week). At the end of each month, I summarize my findings using pivot tables and graphs in a report due a week after, of which I submit within 2- 3 days despite being a full-time double-major graduate student. Though my experience is not healthcare related, it can be beneficial in a healthcare environment. For example, my data analysis experience allowed me to excel when tasked with a class assignment to analyze pertussis outbreak in a local school of 644 students for a Cincinnati Health Department group project. Because of my expertise with Excel, my team selected me to organize the data, as well as perform Descriptive Statistical Analysis and Univariate Analysis. This experience can aid in the analysis and appropriate presentation of large data sets at Mercy Health - West

Essay 1: How will you contribute to the mission of the Nurse Corps scholarship program in providing care to underserved communities?
What does ‘care’ mean? Care is the provision of what is necessary for your health, welfare and protection of someone or something. However when you talk about ‘care’ in a care practice the term changes and becomes more about enabling people to meet all their needs which would refer to their social, physical, emotional, cognitive and cultural needs. The individual is central to the meaning of care in this context.
During this internship I had a variety of tasks that made me understand and develop my skills in cardiac rehab, stress testing, working at the hospital in the CVCU, and also talking to the patients in the hospital about coming to outpatient cardiac rehab. During my time in the outpatient cardiac rehab I have learned and perfected how to take a manual blood pressure, check heart rates, oxygen levels, and be able to teach and instruct our patients on healthy habits to ensure they are staying healthy and active outside the rehab facility. I learned to do a full disclosure on a patient, meaning to check their EKG, find out their max heart rates during exercise, and send a note to the doctor if anything abnormal should occur. I’ve learned to chart and tech
The program united my interest in healthcare and public health coupled with cultivating leadership and management skills. Born and raised by parents working in the medical field, I have always had the urge to follow up on on a health related career. Despite never being pressured into choosing scientific subjects as my academic studies, I deeply admired what a long way science has come and longed to give my contribution to this fascinating world. I am presently studying for my A-levels at St.Aloysius Sixth form in Malta, a college for high achievers.
Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me, even at a young age, to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. In high school, I was fortunate enough to do a cooperative placement at the Peterborough Regional Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit.
This program will give me an opportunity to make a difference in an underserved population, and I can play a significant role in maintaining, collecting, and analyzing patient’s data that physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers rely on to deliver quality healthcare.
Accomplishing my personal goals was very important to me. Since I usually don’t work in a hospital setting, I set three goals that I deemed reasonable enough for myself to accomplish. One of these goals was to understand

Alliances generally are lightly coupled arrangements among existing organizations that are intended to achieve some long-term strategic purpose not possible by any single organization. This includes improving health care in communities. I grew up in a medically disadvantaged area and saw first-hand the hardships that individuals face when health services are absent or distant. In addition, my undergraduate institution was located in Allegany county, the second poorest county in New York State. I have also spent a great deal of time as a volunteer in Homeless Shelters and homeless prevention organizations in both Massachussetts and Pensylvania. During my time as a member of Harvard’s Partners in Health Engage Club, I was able to call upon my exposure to poverty and healthcare needs when learning about how global initiatives are being developed to strengthen the pathway to medical care in countries like Haiti and Rwanda.
It wasn’t until my first day of internship in Bungoma District Hospital, a small town in Western Kenya did the harsh realities of life sink in. I slowly began to become aware of the obstacles that a health care professional in Kenya faces on a daily basis while trying to tackle how to work efficiently in a resource constrained setting to deliver effective patient care - Exorbitant patient volume, poor hygiene and
