Unique Cultural Identity: The Apache Tribe

The Apache’s are in some ways extremely similar to other tribes, but their livelihood and past are extremely unique. Now, Apache tribe lives in reservations in AZ, NM and some of TX. Now they live in Wickiups, they similar to tipis, but made of sticks as well. Only women are in charge of their homes, as well as learning to shoot and ride, but they could not become warriors. The Apache people usually traded, and also raided other tribes. Apaches tell many stories and it is a big part of their culture, and most of the people speak english (roughly 99%). They rode horses to get to where the needed, but they used to only walk before the white settlers came. In their government have elections (republic Democracy) and all candidates need to be older than 18. Their government was created after they vere forcefully moved to reservations. Just in 1886 the Apache tribe were relocated to reservations throughout NM, AZ, and some of TX. Originally they rebelled, but due to their inferior technology and their overall numbers, they were forced to surrender. Now, their population is around 64,849 (2010) and it spiked in the early 1800s. Women had meny responsibilities throughout their homes, women would do almost everything except hunting and becoming warriors, also women had no political power, but they did learn how to shoot a gun and ride a horse so they could protect themselves if they got attacked by settlers or another tribe. Because men's time were so consumed by hunting and fighting in wars constantly, women would raise their kids and do all the work around the house.
