Healthcare administrators/managers usually work in different types of healthcare organizations such as hospitals, long-term care, mental/behavioral health facilities or nursing homes. Their professional activities include several major responsibilities, depending on the size of the organization and the level of employment. When it comes to morality, healthcare administrators possess their inherent protocols which cannot be encoded or examined. The routine of healthcare administrators is often fraught with ethical dilemmas that often go unnoticed since they are directly related to the ordinary part of the healthcare delivery.
Healthcare administrators must adhere to the ethical principles as mentioned in American College of Health Executives (ACHE) Code of Ethics. I believe in following the ethical principles of fairness, honesty, integrity and respect, which will reflect upon my professional duties and will foster the dignity of healthcare. For instance, in my experience, I have seen other managers showing favoritism towards some of their employees for unjustified reasons thereby violating the basic code of ethics such as integrity, respect, etc. Those employees who are not suitably qualified and even lack accurate performances were promoted over the ones who are more qualified and delivered their best efforts. This clearly indicated inequity at the workplace, which usually demotivates the valued employees to work hard and remain dedicated. Thus, to dignify the ethical principles of healthcare, it is the moral duty of a healthcare administrator to ensure justice by enforcing a fair reward system based on the employee’s performances and not by favoring the favorite employees (Comaford, 2013). Some of these items consist of assisting both full and part time staff and faculty, maintaining order within budgets and finance, including all purchase orders and check requests, facilitating student awards, including scholarships, staffing and training within the department, as well as dealing with public policy and laws within the college. It is immensely obvious that this job would keep anyone busy. This alone is one of the reasons I love this profession so much. Each day brings something new, and important group of items to accomplish. Anyone who holds this job, would go into work everyday knowing that the tasks that they are about to perform, will create a difference to not only to the departments and its students, but will also make a difference within the entire college. This person alone has the responsibility of making ethical decisions every single day as well as watching out for others who may need help being pointed in the proper ethical direction based on their knowledge of the school’s ethics plans that have been put in place. If someone were unaware of the ethical standards in this profession, there is a lot of room for things to head in a corrupt direction rather quickly.
