I never felt that my intelligence was tested in school until I was in the tenth grade. Throughout my schooling I had coasted by receiving “A’s” and “B’s”, yet never standing out amongst my peers. I was never challenged by anything educational related. In my sophomore year of high school I decided to take AP World History. It was set to be my first AP course I had ever taken. I chose the course like a sheep following the herd that was my intelligent peers. My time in the class was very turbulent. Through ups and downs I was able to reflect and gained knowledge about my own character and education.
Difficulties came earliest in the year. After my first six weeks the class received our first progress report. On my progress report I had received
a “D” grade. To me this came as no surprise, however I was still disappointed. I hardly ever turned in assignments and would also perform poorly on tests. At the time it would have been easy to blame my difficulties for my life outside of school. Recently my family and I had moved and as the case with most people I had to adjust to that. Because of my grades I began to doubt my own intelligence. I wondered if I even deserved to be in the class in the first place. I believe I felt this way because truthfully this was my first academic test. Prior to take the history class I had went through classes with no troubles. These difficulties were new to me and the way I handled them didn’t portray my true character. Blaming my tribulations on something other than my own ability and effort was simply bad character. Receiving the progress report was a wake up call that caused me to reflect on not only why I got the grade I did but my life at the moment. First, I had to reflect on why I got the grade that I did. I got the grade because I took my intelligence for granted. I thought that I could put in minimal effort while getting a significant output. I realized that I was in a bad situation and I needed to make changes. Critical thinking was only one part of the solution. I also needed action to fix my situation. Progressing through the rest of the academic year I made an abundance of changes. For example, I changed my outlook on the class. Previously I had thought that my situation would continue. In my first six weeks my outlook was apathetic. Secondly, I had to make physical changes. I started to complete my homework and other class assignments. I began to truly focus and exhausted all my energy into studying for tests and finals. I take pride in saying that I finished the class with a “B” grade and even passed my first A.P. test. At the beginning of the year I never thought I would accomplish any of these tasks or even overcome my obstacles. Through critical thinking I was able to triumph over my situation and build character traits of confidence and hard work.

The modern world is linked through networks of communication and exchange between peoples. These exchanges between regions has changed cultures, economics, and politics. Through time the cultural influence between regions has consisted of many factors and elements but comes down to the spread of religion and religious teachings , movement of peoples, technological and cultural advancements affecting trade and commerce. Beginning with the Middle Ages in the years 1100-1500 , Africa, Asia, and Europe developed and influenced each other in several different ways. Starting with religion. The birth of Islam in the Middle East rapidly spread throughout Afro- Eurasia. Islam was attractive to people who were uninterested in the requirements of Christianity and the Church.
Education” by Russell Baker, the author argued that many student futures are based off of a test score - whether that test is a state-regulated test or a test required for admission to college. Society measures what we learn by tests and schools receive more funding for better scores. Baker explained that many students base their intelligence on these test scores, and many institutions focus on test scores more than anything else. However, every student learns that their education and their future is based off of the score that they receive on tests. Baker said that this is “[a period that a child] learns that success come from telling testers what they want to hear” (225). Teachers don’t teach the content but teach students how to make educational guesses. I considered myself to be “dumb” because I did not get a satisfactory score on the ACT. Therefore, I didn’t think I would be a good candidate for college because I would not receive personal funding in the form of scholarships and I didn’t know whether or not I would be accepted into college. This score convinced me that I would not be able to complete college work and that I would only have a future working minimum wage jobs. However, I realized that I was smarter than my test score told me that I was. In the end, the author and I both agreed that students should not be subjugated by the scores provided by an invisible

This event demonstrates KC 1.2: I.A because this led to cultivation of plants and domestication of animals that caused creating abundant amount of food supplies. It illustrates the interaction between human and environment, development of technology, settling patterns, and how natural resources gave some lands advantages over others. Agriculture developed independently at different times in different regions. Historians believe that the Agricultural Revolution might have originated from Middle East (ME), although they are not fully sure.
Some students simply do not test well, others try their hardest and still cannot reach the impracticable standards set for them. The individuals who create these tests do not understand the pressures of being a student, or the struggle to answer thirty-five questions in a compressed time period. One test cannot accurately measure the intelligence of a student.
Results of students who received praise for intelligence: The students in this category had negative results after receiving praising. When asked afterwards if they wanted to do the same level of problems or try more challenging ones, they chose the task that would allow them to look smart and do well on. Consequently, while telling a child how smart he or she is, we are sending a message to not take risks and just look the part. Afterwards, these children were given a hard task, which they performed poorly on, and they know longer liked the problems and did not want to practice them at home. Children also felt “dumb” and when given the initial task (in which they did well), they performed significantly worse. Lastly, their opinions of intelligence reflected that it was an innate capacity as though you cannot improve.
AP Seminar was my first experience in an environment that was completely dedicated to learning, without the fixation on the letter grades that ‘determine’ success. My peers were my teachers. I discussed, debated, and collaborated with peers that shared various viewpoints on thought provoking issues that challenged my own. I learned to ask the ‘Whys?,’ ‘Hows?,’ and ‘What Ifs?’ and dive deeper into discussion. The environment fostered differences in interests, mindsets, and intellect. My attraction drew me to seek an intellectually diverse learning environment that challenges my preconceived opinions and ideas. Standardized tests have been used to see how much a child has learned over a certain period of time. These tests have been a highly debated issue with many parents and just people in general. In the article “Opting out of standardized tests? Wrong answer,” the author Michelle Rhee argues that people should not be trying to opt out of standardized tests because it allows the country to see how much a child has learned and the things they need to improve. On the other hand, in the article “Everything You’ve Heard About Failing Schools Is Wrong,” the author Kristina Rizga argues that standardized tests are not an efficient way to measure a student’s intelligence.

Overall it is evident that standardized testing has affected the education in the United States negatively. The main flaw is that policymakers made standardized testing the center of our education system, which intern led to vast changes in curriculum where educators were forced to teach to test rather than teaching materials that fosters creativity, and enhances knowledge. Howard Gardner, famous for his work on multiple intelligences, stated he was unconcerned that American children were ranked last among the major industrial nations in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study. He reported that tests measure exposure to facts and skills not whether or not kids can think (Ritter 5).
It is a fact that some people are better at taking tests than other people. Intelligent students who challenge themselves throughout their high school careers and have high grade point averages can do poorly on a test, while a student who has only taken basic level classes can score significantly higher. It all started in kindergarten with one test. One small test has and will continue to influence me the rest of my educational life. The test was an aptitude test that placed me in the “accelerated” classes starting in first grade. I was “one of the smart ones”. However, in first grade I took another test, and that put me into the EXPAND program at school. EXPAND happened once a week, and I would miss an entire day’s worth of class to go do even more advanced work. There were only five or six of us in EXPAND per grade, and we were considered the exceptionally elite ones. We were plucked from the accelerated classes of the grade we were in, and then pushed to learn things that were months before everyone else or even sometimes years
The Oxford Dictionary defines intelligence as “the ability acquire and apply knowledge and skills.” Many people are born naturally intelligent, able to grasp and understand concepts easily, with little work. In children, it is easy to separate those born with higher intellectual ability from the rest, because they easily excel in learning. This skill is often lost by those born with it, and through a great deal of work others attain it. In order for an individual to have true intelligence into her adult years, she must foster what gifts she is given, and strive to better her self academically. When starting this course, I was introduced to the main questions surrounding the field of Social Studies Education: What is Social Studies? Why and How should we teach it? From this class I have been able to understand each of these questions and how they interplay with one another, in order formulate my own thoughts on each. This combination of these questions ultimately defines why I feel I would be a good candidate to teach Social Studies.
