Fascism DBQ Imagine the feeling of someone breathing down your neck, always watching and controlling you like a puppet. People who lived in fascist governments didn't have to imagine it. Fascism goes back as far as 1922 with Benito Mussolini and Italy. Fascism is a totalitarian form of government in which its ideology is for the nation and the rights of the individual don't matter. Fascist leaders wanted to give the people the perception that they were the next coming of God and that whatever they say is right no matter what. Hitler’s fascist government not only wanted to instill order and discipline in adults, but they also had the smart idea to force this discipline and order into the youth of Nazi Germany as well, to make sure when they reach adulthood, that they would never go against Hitler. An excerpt from Life in the Third Reich explains Germany’s disciplinary measures against disobedient citizens. “People will think twice before opposing us, if they know what awaits them in the camps”(Doc 6). This excerpt highlights the dark side of Nazism through its extremities when it comes to disobedience, which causes those in doubt about the direction of Nazism to be silenced out of fear of being punished. Fascist governments seized control of their population through the method of extreme nationalism. One specific rule in the Fascist Decalogue states “The nation serves even as a sentinel [guard] over a can of petrol [gasoline]”(Doc 1).
