Having the blues, feeling a little anxious, or getting stressed out from time to time is part of life. However too much stress or the feeling of being anxious constantly can affect the level of anxiety someone must deal with. Anxiety can affect a person’s self-achievement, education, and even creating/keeping relationship with family and friends. When untreated this disorder can become more severe causing depression, or even alcohol or drug dependency. The people who suffer from anxiety must deal with the stress and worry of everyday life, but to what extent does the amount of pressure a person face affect their increase chance of higher anxiety?

The pressures of students today is a main reason to the increase of anxiety in young adults. In one article Jessica Minahan (2012) argues that “Anxiety impacts a student 's working memory, making it difficult to learn and retain information. The anxious student works and thinks less efficiently, which significantly affects the student 's learning capability.” (Minahan, 2012) Students who deal with anxiety tend to have a harder time in school compared to other fellow classmates. With the level of pressure there is for teenagers to be good students this affects their level of anxiety which makes learning harder for them. Students with higher level of stress tend to feel more anxious than other do to the pressures of being a student. Professor Eysenck argues (2009) “This shows that it is important that teachers focus not only on whether a student’s academic performance seems to be OK but also on how much effort the student had to put in to achieve that level. Anxiety is a monster that most people have to deal with on a daily basis. Even though anxiety is not actually a monster it still torments thousands of people every day, leaving them weak and scared. Anxiety defined means “distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune” defined by Dictionary.com. In the epic poem of Beowulf, one could say that the townspeople had anxiety when it came to Grendel because they feared what he could do to them.

In a school setting students may experience anxiety from bullying, being judged or criticized by others, not initiating social interactions with others, feelings of worthiness, low academic achievement etc.. providing skills and techniques to help them cope with these stressors can reduce how anxiety can dictate how they live their life.

Anxiety is a feeling of tension associated with a sense of threat of danger when the source of the danger is not known. In comparison, fear is a feeling of tension that is associated with a known source of danger. I believe it is normal for us to have some mild anxiety present in our daily lives. Everyday that I can think of I have some kind of anxiety though out that day. Anxiety warns us and enables us to get ready for the ‘fight or flight’ response. Anxiety can be distressing for the body because of how the body reacts. Anxiety can sometimes be helpful for the body, “Normal anxiety is part of the body’s natural defense system. It's an alert to a threat that is unknown, vague, or comes from your own internal fears. While you are in this state, your feelings can range from a vague sense of worry to physical sensations such as a pounding heartbeat” (Fairview). The body can actually become stronger and overcome anxiety which is what Fairview is trying to state. conversely, the body can become very ill because of anxiety. Someone who experiences anxiety can have dizziness, sickness, racing heartbeat, sleeplessness, and very strong emotions. Some teenagers can even become hospitalized from anxiety and the stress that they have to go through. Students conversely have it harder than others, “A teenager named Jake took three AP classes and his teachers did not understand the amount of work he had on his plate with a job, extracurricular activities and the other classes that he had. Jake’s biggest fear was failure and he kept failing, he became very sick and was hospitalized for four days” (The New York Times). Jake was so overwhelmed with his classes, jobs, and extracurricular activities that the expectations of his parents and his teachers affected his physical and mental health. Other people can experience anxiety, but not even know they are experiencing it. The body can also go through dry throat, tense muscles, and sweaty palms. Others that have experienced anxiety for a while can cause other worse health issues such as digestion problems, weakened immune systems, problems falling asleep, and cardiovascular troubles (Denizet-Lewis). Anxiety is characterized as misery or uneasiness of the mind that is caused by the dread of threat or adversity. The vast majority with a nervousness issue will attempt to evade presentation to whatever triggers their uneasiness. Cases of

Thus, their energy is wasted when it could be used for task elaboration or to help improve their overall academic performance. Students with academic anxiety are self engrossed and lead to their own academic demise. Test anxiety does not only affect a students performance on a test, but Huberty (2009) asserts that test anxiety overtime tends to contribute to more common underachievement. He describes the consequences of constant test anxiety including lowered self-esteem, reduced effort, and loss of desire to complete school tasks. Students who have academic anxiety also have a higher risk of developing depression, and often feel deprived of confidence (Cunningham, 2008). Thus, academic anxiety can become extreme, and have negative effects of students’ well being.
There is a fine line between anxiety and depression. A line that is often times blurred. Although there are differences between the two, they also share many similarities, which can lead to false diagnoses for patients. It only gets more complicated when both illnesses are present. For example, The National Institute of Mental Health (2009) did a study of anxiety disorders and found that 53.7% of people reported they also experienced major depression as a secondary condition. These researchers also stated that people who are severely depressed do become anxious. In order to have a better understanding of anxiety and depression one must first clearly define the two conditions, understand the causes, look at the symptoms involved, and review the different treatment options available.
In life, everyone gets anxious. You might be nervous about giving a speech, or maybe you're worried about taking a test. That usually lasts for only a few moments, and then you move on. For me, however, anxiety is constant. To me, anxiety is the largest obstacle I have ever had to overcome on my educational journey.
Many people feel apprehensive and miserable every now and then, but when does it take over their whole lives? Losing a loved one, doing poorly in school or work, being bullied and other hardships might lead a person to feel sad, lonely, scared, nervous and/or anxious. Some people experience this on an everyday basis, sometimes even or no reason at all. Those people might have an anxiety disorder, depression, or both. It is highly likely for someone with an anxiety disorder to also be suffering from depression, or the other way around. 50% of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
