In the story “Antigone” you are introduced to two characters, Antigone and Creon, they both share traits of a tragic hero, but Creon better fits a tragic hero then Antigone does.
Creon survives the whole story and most of it revolves around him even though the story is named after Antigone.
First off, Creon’s world shatters around him in a matter of 12 hours, he loses so much because of one choice he makes and won’t change.
Creon wants to die after seeing his wife, son, and niece kill themselves in less than an hour, but Choragos tells him he will die when he is meant to, “All that will come when it will” (Sophocles 138).
The story ends with Creon’s world falling apart which is one reason he is a tragic hero.
Secondly, “Antigone” also ends
with Antigone, Eurydice, and Haimon all killing themselves. Creon finds out about Eurydice killing herself because the death of her son and niece “and her heart/ Welcomed the knife her own hand guided” (Sophocles 120-121). The story included a lot of bloodshed and death of other characters besides Creon, which also makes Creon a tragic hero. Lastly, Creon’s very stubborn and has the tendency to always be right until it’s too late. “You consider it right for a man of my years and experience/ To go to school to a boy?” (Sophocles 97-98). Creon’s tragic flaw is the need to always be right which ends in a lot of death and bloodshed which is again another reason he is the tragic hero of the story. Throughout the whole story Sophocles focuses on Creon and his mistake and the outcomes which makes him the tragic hero of the story “Antigone”.
A tragedy is when someone drops my chocolate milkshake from Chick-Fil-A in the parking lot, but the Greek definition of a tragedy is,”a play in which the protagonist, usually a man of importance and outstanding personal qualities, falls to disaster through the combination of a personal failing and circumstances with which he cannot deal”(Collins). In Sophocles’ play Antigone, Creon is the most tragic character because of his hubris, hamartia, and he is the primary Antagonist.
There are certain qualities that a character must posses in order to qualify as a tragic hero. Ideally, the subject is to be a person of high rank, so that they may have much to lose. (Most frequently a monarch is used.) Granted, Antigone is a member of the royal bloodline. But we must not forget that she is the daughter of incest, hardly a glamorous position to start with. In Oedipus Rex, Antigone was indirectly disgraced, while Creon was socially elevated by inheriting kingship from Oedipus. Also, Creon’s being king comparatively trumps Antigone’s lesser status of orphaned princess. While this in itself objectively proves nothing, it does at a minimum make Creon the more likely choice of protagonist.
For example, Creon said " I here proclaim to the city that this man shall no one honor with a grave and none shall mourn. You shall leave him without burial." (Sophocles 188). This shows that Creon feels more superior than the Gods, and creates his own law for an orderly, stable society. Another way Creon used his power was by punishing Antigone for disobeying his law of leaving Polynices unburied, and that she should starve to death in cave and isolated from society. An example, is shown when he said "Lead her away at once. Enfold her in that rocky tomb of hers- as I told you to. There leave her alone, solitary, to die if she wishes or live a buried life in such a home." (Sophocles 215). This illustrates that he has transformed from reasonable and understanding, to brutal and
Creon has attributes such as ignorance, hubris, and self knowledge that distinguish him as being the tragic hero of Antigone. Creon’s presumptuous personality lead to his pitiful downfall. Creon’s qualities such as nobility and self knowledge show the positive aspects of being a tragic hero as well. Using a mix of these characteristics, Creon accurately exhibits the tragic hero of Antigone.
In the play Antigone, I choose Creon to be the tragic hero because he is the King of Thebes and he looses everything he has. Creon being King makes the audience believe that something like that can happen to the King then what can happen to us. Antigone the niece of Creon, The sister of Polyneices was punished by Creon for burying Polyneces after his death, Creon has forbidden anybody to do so. Once Creon punished Antigone the blind prophet Teiresias told him that the Gods will take revenge for his actions, then Creon tried to change everything but he is too late. Creon's tragic flaws were his stubbornness, the abuse of power and the actions he took to cause the downfall of the Thebes.
A tragic hero has many definitions but Creons characteristics fit each single one. He displayed a fatal flaw that drove him mad near the end but also understood that his predicament was caused by him alone. Antigone cannot be the tragic hero because although she possesses several flaws, she experiences no true illumination. She does not met the required the traits for the tragic hero. Creon wanted to protect the state above personal cost, a task that was achieved in a way. Creon is the tragic hero in Sophocles Antigone because he can’t accept a diminished view of himself; he endures great suffering and is enlightened in the end.
After the arguments above, readers should recognize that Creon is the tragic hero of Antigone. Creon and Antigone are both main person of the play, but Creon more of a tragic hero than Antigone. Creon’s dominance in society, his high rank, and his tragic flaw self-pride helps prove this topic. Because of Creon’s sophisticated characteristics and position in the story, it makes Antigone’s character seem less of a major character. Almost every reader thinks that since Antigone is the protagonist, and the main character she is definitely the tragic hero. Creon is the tragic hero of the Greek Tragedy, Antigone because of his dominance, high rank, and self-pride.
Creon was seen in a different context in Oedipus compared to his character in Antigone.
When Creon leaves Antigone in the vault to die, she believes “I have not sinned before God. Or if I have, I shall know the truth in death. But if the guilt lies upon Creon who judged me, then, I pray, may his punishment equal my own.”(Antigone 227-228). Antigone sees her actions as only helping a loved one who was in the right deserving a proper burial as much as King of Thebes Eteocles, but if Creon is guilty for his wrongs his punishment should be equal. When Teiresias enters to speak with Creon, Teiresias tells of his vision, but Creon believes his prophet has also been bribed with gold. Putting his foolish thoughts aside Creon learns he must “ free Antigone from her vault And build a tomb for the body of Polyneices.”(Antigone 235). Creon begins to listen to those around him seeing “The laws of the gods are mighty, and a man must serve them To the last day of his life!”(Antigone 236). Creon sees the Gods do impact society and finally realizes listening to them benefits everyone as a whole. Creon arrives too late to save Antigone, who has hung herself and along with her is his son Haimon, who fights with Creon in the vault ultimately kills himself in the process. This “spark” caused Creon to intensify his punishments towards Antigone, which in turn caused a chain reaction of events and eventually led to his tragic decline. Being portrayed as a menacing villain throughout the play, Creon began as an honorable man; however, overwhelming events and confrontations caused Creon to evolve into this monstrous figure. This play, Antigone, was titled after one of the play’s main characters; however, the title could have been “Creon”, due to Creon’s influence throughout the play. Creon was a major influence to the play’s plot as it involves Creon within a majority of the scenes, from beginning to end. Throughout the play, Creon’s tragic countdown is expressed, beginning with him as king of Thebes to the death of his beloved family.
Despite the fact that the play's name stands as Antigone, I believe that Creon should be recognized as the central character in this play. He lives longer, has more lines, stands in the middle of many moral arguments, and doesn't pull a disappearing act in the middle of the play. Provided with this knowledge, maybe a reader will read the play Antigone with a new prospective, and look at the story from both point-of-views. Not placing Antigone as the 'good-guy', and Creon as the 'bad-guy', but thinking of the pair as good people fighting for the right in conflicting situations.

This is not the only karma that Creon receives though. Creon’s beloved wife, Eurydice, also met her death when she was told the fate of her son. Creon finally realizes how blinded he was, and how he was continuously making foolish decisions. Two losses in one day- Creon is filled with great remorse and regret. Like the ‘Sun King’, all the sunlight in Creon’s life has faded. The world no longer revolves around Creon, as all his valued things in life have vanished. If you attain power, use it wisely. Otherwise you will end up heartbroken and repentant, just like Creon.
Some may argue that Creon does not fit the mold of a tragic hero. They believe this is so because Creon's punishment is not excessive. Perhaps they think that the death of Creon's family members and loss of his kingdom is well deserved due to his wrongdoings. Although it is true that Creon makes a mistake, he is excessively punished even though he isn't directly at fault. This is illustrated when Creon finds out from the messenger that his wife blames him for the death of her and her son. Creon exclaims, “I am nothing. I have no life./ Lead me away.../ That have killed unwittingly/ My son, my wife./ I know not where I should turn,/ Where look for help./ My hands have done amiss, my head is bowed/ With fate too heavy for me” (Sophocles lines 1119-1126). Creon has to agonize in guilt because he knows he is the reason his family members are no longer living.
