Antidepressants safe during pregnancy? Consuming antidepressants during pregnancy can be dangerous for the health of the baby, but not taking any medication might put in risk the life of the mother. Antidepressants are the primary option to treat depression. A decision to use antidepressants while pregnant is based on the balance among the risks and benefits of taking the medication. The safety of taking this pills during pregnancy appears to be reassuring but there are remain two important areas of controversy such as neonatal withdrawal syndrome, and primary pulmonary hypertension of the newborn. There are many reasons why the use of antidepressants during pregnancy is debatable. The number one reason is that antidepressant is considered a luxury medicine. According to Jennifer Payne, MD, director of the Women's Mood Disorders Center at Johns Hopkins, these medicaments should not be taken during pregnancy. The used of this medication can cause potential risks for the healthy development of the unborn baby such as teratogenesis, preterm birth, low birth weight, and pregnancy complications such as spontaneous abortion, and hemorrhage. As well as postnatal effects such as persistent pulmonary hypertension of the baby. The FDA advises the public that the use of common antidepressants, like Prozac and Paxil, late in pregnancy could put a baby at risk for respiratory failure. Many women with this condition faced a difficult decision: continue their medication during pregnancy, putting their child at risk, or compromise their own mental health by going off the medication. “In 2004 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warnings that the use of antidepressants in the last three months of pregnancy may cause serious issues for new born, resulting in longer hospitalization, respiratory support, and tube feeding” (FDA). She was using medication and going to therapy to control her symptoms. When she finds out that she was pregnant, she was happy and expected her pregnancy to be the best experience she ever had. For the well-being of the baby, she decided to stop using her medication for depression. After a few months, she stated having ideas that something was wrong with the baby, regardless of genetic testing and ultrasounds that showed her that the baby was healthy and strong. She was convince that the baby was not developing normal, and that she cannot imagine being a mother. With time her mental health deteriorated drastically.
