On Thursday 13, 2014, I visited the American Museum of Natural History in Central Park, New York City. When I first entered the museum I saw the dinosaurs that were another revelation. I felt the excitement rushing through my veins. In the museum, I observed and took notes on many exhibits that I enjoyed in my assigned hall and other halls. One of the first animals that captured my attention in the Hall of North American Mammals was the wolf. In Shore of Gunflint Lake, Minnesota by moon glow and the shimmering Northern Lights, a pack of wolves speeds after a dear. Wolves are highly social animals that live in packs. The pack is the nucleus of the wolf life. Most packs consist of a mating pair and their offspring. The mating pair is the dominant male and female. One of the key privileges held by the alpha female aggressively prevents other adult wolves in the pack from mating by snap or snarl at them. The alpha male is the leader and the decision maker, decide when the pack will travel and hunt. To ensure group hunting, he will block members from leaving the pack. After all, there some spilt off could happen to form packs of their own whereupon they become the competition. The adult males weighs from 65 to 175 lbs. (30-80 kg) and the adult females weighs from 50 to 120 lbs. (23-33kg). The average litter consists of one to eleven pups. Wolves have the widest natural range of any land other than humans and once occupied most of the Northern Hemisphere. Their numbers are improving after decades of persecution. But I also know myself well enough that I'm very emotional person that has a hard time handling animals being put down. If we pay close attention to the animal’s behaviors, we will notice they offer many lessons for human beings. Such as they make love last, loyalty, they find love in hopeless place, they help each other out, they can sense others feelings, they respect their elders and they exhibit signs of empathy and compassion. Therefore, the American Museum of Natural History in New York was an interesting and amazing place to visit and to learn. I learned new things about my favorite and different animals. As a final point, I believe as biologists, we still do not know many things about the natural history of many animals, and behind each animal lies a hidden story waiting to be discovered.
The maned wolf is omnivorous and is a secondary consumer alike the Coyote and Darwin's fox. It has a similar diet to the coyote’s, since it feeds on small and medium sized mammals such as rodents, birds, fish and rabbits. Over the past several years, the gray wolf, native to the Wisconsin area, has been listed federally as an endangered species due to the graphic and horrific treatment they had received during the industrialization periods of America, when they were frowned upon and hated because they are predatory creatures and did, on occasion, attack livestock and pets. Because the government was encouraging the hunting, including bounties for the animals, the wolves were hunted to near extinction. However, now Wisconsin faces a new problem. With the reintroduction of the wolves to the state, and their continued endangered status federally, the population has increased well beyond expectations, reaching what could be considered a problematic state. A regulated hunt and a population control procedure has become necessary in Wisconsin to protect state's economic endeavors of game, wildlife, and agriculture, and also the wolves themselves, to keep them from overpopulating and facing starvation and lack of land.

Wolves used to thrive in the western United States. There was ample game to hunt and plenty of places to live and wander. Until people moved in, wolves were settled. As European settlement expanded to the west, it began to take its toll on the wolves and their habitat. Clearing of the forests came first, which was then accompanied by significant over-hunting in this area (Noceker). Slowly wolves became concentrated into smaller and smaller areas in the west. Finally, they were assumed to be bothers to the ranchers and farmers and maybe a threat to those people who lived in the area.
Hypotheses of the Effects of Wolf Predation Abstract: This paper discusses four hypotheses to explain the effects of wolf predation on prey populations of large ungulates. The four proposed hypotheses examined are the predation limiting hypothesis, the predation regulating hypothesis, the predator pit hypothesis, and the stable limit cycle hypothesis. There is much research literature that discusses how these hypotheses can be used to interpret various data sets obtained from field studies. It was concluded that the predation limiting hypothesis fit most study cases, but that more research is necessary to account for multiple predator - multiple prey relationships. They most only eat one meal a day and eat up to 20 pounds in that one meal. For the location of my naturalistic observational study I chose a public park with a splash pad which I frequently visit with my daughter. Since this site is quite popular with locals at any given time of the day there are at least over a dozen people present. As the park is designed for the entertainment of children the age group of the people varies. There are young children accompanied by their parents and grandparents as well as teenagers in groups. Therefore the above discussed park proved to be the greatest preference for me to observe the behavior of people in a natural setting.
Every year thousands of animals are euthanized due to animal testing such as cosmetic testing, medical testing, and dissection. (A Critical Look at Animal Experimentation) (Types of Animal Testing) Some of the things we use every day such as; make up, soap, furniture polish, and varieties of cleaning supplies, are tested on rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, and other animals. (Animal Testing) Cosmetic testing is used to test a product and its ingredients, medical testing finds cures for different illnesses; and dissection is used to help high school students in science classes have a better understanding of the class or students undergoing the medical field in college. (Animal Experimentation) Animal testing is not required by law; it is only used to protect companies from consumer lawsuits, provided new research for diseases, and provide a visual learning experiment for students. (A Critical Look at Animal Experimentation) It has been proven that there are more reliable and less expensive alternatives to animal testing, such as; computer models and cell and tissue tests. Animal experimentation should be eliminated because it is an inhumane method for testing purposes.
Animal experimentation is contentious issue in today’s society that, whether it continue or should stop. Many animals such as monkey undergo painful suffering or even death as a result of scientific research for the sake of humans’ health. Among the animals monkeys are the main victims of the scientists’ experiments because of their human-like characteristics and physical process to humans. Monkeys’ similarities allow the scientists to test effectiveness of the new discovered drugs, food additives, and chemical and even cosmetics products. Although, such medical experimentations had helped scientists to produce vaccines, and medicines that are necessary for elimination of some deceases, but the test had negative medical effect on monkeys.
For centuries, animals have been known as man’s companions, a form of therapeutic relief, and a source for human joy and entertainment. However, animals are being tortured and treated cruelly for the sake of human prosperity all over the country. Animal testing as a means of researching medical advancements and product quality for consumers is a large problem in today’s society. The research experiments executed with animals in the name of scientific discovery call into question the compassion and integrity of the human spirit. If we do not put an end to animal testing in the United States, many animals will suffer in anguish through the torment inflicted upon them in a product testing lab. Product testing on animals should be illegal, because animals are killed or kept in captivity their entire life, substances that are tested on animals may never be released for human use, and there are alternatives available to testing on animals.
A subtle, earthy smell reminiscent of the show tent at a county fair permeates the air; choruses of soft clucks and bawks break the peaceful silence. A quiet, suburban neighborhood of manicured lawns and minivans might be the last place you would expect to find a flock of chickens, but my back yard is home to just that. For as long as I can remember, animals have fascinated and enraptured me. Whether it be hours spent poring over ornithological field guides, days devoted to observing backyard fauna, or taking every opportunity to volunteer at a local exotic animal farm, my life has always revolved significantly around a fundamental, insatiable interest in the innumerable species with which we share the earth. Often, this interest took the form of a constant desire to raise and care for animals, including fish, gerbils, sugar gliders, chinchillas, dogs, cats, horses, sheep, ducks, and, as of this past summer, chickens.
